Extraction 3 Is Officially Coming to Netflix in 2027

Tyler Rake is suiting up again. After nearly three years of waiting, Netflix has officially greenlit Extraction 3, with cameras set to roll this summer. The action franchise that smashed streaming records twice is gearing up for its most anticipated chapter yet, and the full core team is coming back.

The Dream Team Is Reuniting for Round Three

Chris Hemsworth, Idris Elba, and Golshifteh Farahani will all reprise their roles in Extraction 3, with Sam Hargrave back as director.1

Hemsworth has officially closed his deal to reprise the role of unstoppable mercenary Tyler Rake, joined by Idris Elba and Golshifteh Farahani.2 Farahani’s character Nik Khan has been the heartbeat of the franchise since day one.

She plays Nik Khan, Tyler Rake’s trusted handler, mercenary partner, and closest ally. She appeared in the first Extraction in 2020, pulling the strings from the control room before jumping into the final firefight, and her role was massively expanded in Extraction 2 (2023), where she fought side-by-side with Rake for most of the movie.2

There is also a key change in the writing room this time. Netflix has greenlit the third installment with Sam Hargrave returning to direct and David Weil on board to write the screenplay3, replacing Joe Russo, who penned both previous films. Fresh eyes on the script could mean a bolder and more unpredictable story for Tyler Rake.

On the production side, the Russo Brothers, alongside Angela Russo-Otstot, Michael Disco, and Ari Costa, will continue to produce through their AGBO banner, while Hemsworth and Benjamin Grayson also produce for Wild State.2

Cameras Roll in June, Australia Gets Its Moment

The wait is finally over, and the production timeline is now locked in.

Cameras are due to roll from June 1st and run through October 9th, 2026, with Sydney, Australia eyed for the bulk of the shoot.2

This is a significant and long-overdue homecoming. For Extraction 2, the production originally planned to shoot in Sydney but was forced to relocate to Prague and Vienna due to COVID-19 lockdowns. By finally landing in Sydney for the third entry, director Sam Hargrave and Chris Hemsworth are finally getting the Australian-based production they have been chasing since 2021.4

Sources indicate that Europe is expected to be the home for some of the filming over the summer, although exact locations have not been confirmed.4

There is also a practical reason for the summer start date. Hemsworth’s schedule has been a balancing act, but the summer start allows him to finish his upcoming project Kockroach, which shoots this month, before jumping back into Rake’s tactical gear.2

Why the Long Wait and What the Numbers Say

The road to Extraction 3 has been anything but smooth. Joe Russo stated at the 2024 New York Comic Con that the threequel was “definitely filming next year [2025],” which ultimately never happened.5

The delay is likely due to the fact that lead actor Chris Hemsworth spent much of 2025 reprising his role as Thor and filming for the upcoming MCU film Avengers: Doomsday.6 Big stars come with big scheduling puzzles.

But the patience has always been justified. Here is exactly why Netflix refused to let this franchise slow down:

Film Milestone
Extraction (2020) Most-watched original film in Netflix history at the time
Extraction 2 (2023) 129.3 million views, ranked 10th on Netflix’s Most Popular English Films list
Extraction 3 (2027) Officially greenlit, filming June to October 2026

The sequel didn’t quite match the original in terms of Netflix viewership, but it did fare better critically, sporting an 80% score on Rotten Tomatoes.7 That critical improvement matters. It means the franchise is not just popular. It is getting better.

What the Story Might Look Like

Plot details are locked away tight, but the clues left behind in Extraction 2 paint a very clear picture.

At the end of 2023’s Extraction 2, Elba’s mysterious Alcott offers Hemsworth’s Rake and his partner Nik Khan a way out of prison on the condition they accept missions on behalf of his boss, seemingly laying the groundwork for the third movie.5

That one scene changed everything fans thought they knew about where the story was going.

Elba teased back in 2024 that Alcott has “some unfinished business” with Rake.5 And at New York Comic Con 2024, Joe Russo turned up the heat further.

“If you like that relationship between Idris and Chris, you’re gonna enjoy Extraction 3.” Joe Russo, 2024 NYCC

It is unclear who might join the cast of the third movie, although the franchise has favored casting local international actors. Indian actors Randeep Hooda, Priyanshu Painyuli, and Pankaj Tripathi starred in the Bangladesh-set Extraction.8 Given the Sydney shoot, Australian talent could feature prominently this time around.

The Extraction Universe Is Getting Much Bigger

Extraction 3 is just one piece of a fast-growing franchise puzzle that Netflix is aggressively building out.

The first spinoff, Mercenary, was announced in August 2025 and will star Omar Sy, Boyd Holbrook, and Natalie Dormer. The eight-episode television series will follow Sy’s mercenary Kalidou Diallo, who embarks on a dangerous mission to rescue hostages held in Libya.8

There is also exciting news on the film side. Netflix announced Tygo, a South Korea-set spinoff film starring Eternals’ Don Lee in the title role of a former child-soldier turned mercenary who goes on a revenge mission through Korea’s criminal underworld.8

The franchise is also getting Lisa of Blackpink set to lead the cast of Tygo, marking the global popstar’s feature acting debut after previously starring in The White Lotus Season 3.9

Netflix is not just making a sequel. It is building an action universe.

This marks AGBO’s seventh film with Netflix, a collaboration that includes The Gray Man and The Electric State.3 The partnership is proving to be one of the most productive in the streaming era.

As for when audiences can expect to finally watch Extraction 3, the timeline points clearly in one direction. Given the late 2026 wrap date, we likely won’t see the film hit Netflix until summer or fall 2027.4

Three films. One unstoppable mercenary. A franchise that refuses to die, much like Tyler Rake himself. From Sydney’s sun-soaked streets to undisclosed corners of Europe, the third chapter of this record-breaking action series is shaping up to be the biggest yet. For millions of fans who have been waiting since that jaw-dropping Extraction 2 cliffhanger, the confirmation that the whole team is back, armed with a fresh writer and a locked production schedule, feels like the best news of the year.
