A One-Episode King Won Pendragon Cycle Its Only Leo

Colin Cunningham won a 2026 Leo for one Pendragon Cycle episode, a Vancouver craft prize for a series shot in Hungary and Italy, not a Hollywood conversion.

Colin Cunningham won Best Lead Performance in a Dramatic Series at the 2026 Leo Awards for a single episode of The Pendragon Cycle: Rise of the Merlin. He played King Vortigern in a series Jeremy Boreing filmed on location in Hungary and Italy, not in British Columbia.

Daily Wire has treated every nod as a crack in a blacklist. The actual prize is a Vancouver craft trophy, handed to a local actor for one episode, while the series itself never reached the program ballot.

Cunningham Takes a Leo for a Single Episode

The Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Foundation of British Columbia listed Cunningham as the winner of Best Lead Performance Dramatic Series for The Pendragon Cycle: Rise of the Merlin. The Foundation’s jurors spent upwards of 8 weeks on more than 1500 eligible entries across 19 program categories. Awards went out on July 4 and 5, 2026.

Only three names made that acting ballot. Cunningham beat Kristin Kreuk of Murder in a Small Town and Vanessa Morgan of Wild Cards, both leads on network series shot in the province.

THE 2026 LEAD BALLOT

Result Actor Series and episode
Winner Colin Cunningham The Pendragon Cycle: Rise of the Merlin, A Fatherless Child
Nominee Kristin Kreuk Murder in a Small Town, The Fall of Holman
Nominee Vanessa Morgan Wild Cards, Quit Playing Games (With My Life)

Boreing, the series creator, posted his congratulations on July 6, 2026. He credited Cunningham and director Jesse V. Johnson, and joked that the win was more impressive because he had voted for Natalie Portman.

In an earlier statement he said Cunningham “brought to Vortigern a gravity and a grief that anchor the entire series.” The Foundation had already published the late May Leo nomination before those July nights in Vancouver.

The Series Never Made the Program Ballot

Best Dramatic Series went to Allegiance, a Surrey cop drama. The other program nominees were A Week Away, Murder in a Small Town, and Watson. Pendragon Cycle is not on that list.

That gap matters because program prizes and craft prizes are different doors. A series prize asks whether British Columbia people held creative and financial control. A performance prize can travel with the actor. Pendragon collected no other Leo. The one it did collect followed Cunningham, not the company that paid for the swords.

The Leos have run since 1999 as a provincial industry night, not a Hollywood pipeline. Walter Daroshin’s Foundation exists to mark B.C. film and television work. A Daily Wire original can show up there if a B.C. resident has a credit worth entering. It does not have to convert a guild in Los Angeles first.

How a Hungary Shoot Still Qualified in Vancouver

Boreing’s press kit is blunt about geography. Principal photography used Hungarian lakes and Italian valleys, with stills dated September 21, September 26, and October 6, 2023. Stunt coordinator Krisztian Kery and action director Balázs Farkas ran the fights. That is not a Vancouver street.

Cunningham still fit the craft door. He was born in Los Angeles in 1966 and moved to Vancouver in 1993, then went through Vancouver Film School. Leo rules say a craft entrant must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident who kept a B.C. home for the 12 months before principal photography and filed a provincial tax return. They also say craft entries without a program are allowed when the show itself does not qualify.

WHAT THE CRAFT DOOR REQUIRES

  • Residency: A Canadian citizen or permanent resident who lived in British Columbia for the 12 months before cameras rolled.
  • Tax filing: A British Columbia tax return for the year the rules name.
  • Credit: An on-screen credit in the category being entered, plus a headshot with the entry.
  • Program optional: If the series cannot enter as a B.C. production, the individual can still submit the craft work.

That is how a European shoot lands a Vancouver trophy. The rest of the Pendragon company, including British lead Tom Sharp as Merlin, had no such door. Cunningham did, because he had already spent three decades in the local labor pool that the Leos were built to toast.

Sick, Shaved, and Out of Time

Cunningham has said he walked into makeup artist Jeff Dawn’s trailer and asked whether the other men were “tall, ripped and gorgeous.” Dawn said yes. Cunningham’s answer was, “Give me cancer.”

I thought about medieval Britain. Cold, wet, no Vitamin D, bad food. I pictured a sickly, tired and desperate man with bad knees. A man who knows his end is near. Jeff looked at me and said, ‘I’m shaving your head.’

Colin Cunningham, actor

He has been John Pope for 48 episodes of Falling Skies and Major Paul Davis for 16 episodes of Stargate SG-1. IMDb credits him with 12 wins and 18 nominations, including a 2014 Leo for the web series Fools for Hire and a 2024 Leo nomination for the film He Never Left. People who know that face still miss it under Vortigern’s scalp. The disguise is the point of the entry.

On the fights he was less romantic. Kery and Farkas, he said, do not fake the hits. The swords are blunt and heavy, and if a man has to fly ten feet, someone has to put him there. He called the days exhausting and the ensemble “the greatest” group of little-known actors he had worked with, naming Sharp and Alex Laurence-Phillips.

What Vortigern Does in 56 Minutes

Episode 3, A Fatherless Child, runs 00:56:27. Boreing wrote it. Johnson directed it. The logline is short: a king demands blood, and Merlin walks back into the living world. Vortigern has made himself high king, cut deals with the Saecsen, and built a tower that rises by day and falls by night. He wants a fatherless child to answer the riddle. Merlin will not serve him.

The hour is the hinge of the seven-part run on DailyWire+, the moment the legend’s usurper meets the legend’s prophet and loses. Boreing later called Cunningham and Johnson’s work “perhaps the best on-screen death scene in the history of the medium,” which is a creator’s superlative, not a critic’s score. What the episode actually shows is a sick king watching his own men turn as the fort burns.

The series is a seven-part historical fantasy adapted from Stephen R. Lawhead’s Pendragon Cycle novels, with Lawhead credited as a producer. Episodes run 56 to 69 minutes, 7 hours 27 minutes in the delivered masters. Boreing directed the first two. Ryan Whitaker took episodes 4 through 6. Johnson returned for the finale, The Last True Bard. Cunningham is billed among the “also credited” names, under the regulars, because he was never the season’s spine. The Leo ballot still tagged the performance as lead, which is how guest-leads get in when the hour belongs to them.

Boreing has described the show as a twenty-five-year attempt to put Lawhead’s sub-Roman, Christian Britain on screen without sanding down the beliefs or the brutality. That is the mud, faith, and sword work the series is selling, and it is the frame Cunningham keeps pointing back to when the trophy comes up.

Awards are great. But I was more happy for the show. It was legitimate industry recognition. Because we made a show about valor, dignity, sacrifice, and courage, we were spat upon, vilified, and shadow-banned. Not a single mainstream critic would touch it.

Prime Video Charts After the Trophy

The series opened on DailyWire+ in January 2026. Prime Video took the United Kingdom, Ireland, Spain, and Portugal through the summer, then the United States and Canada on Tuesday, September 1, 2026. Boreing’s press kit, checked on September 10, 2026, put the U.S. run at #1 among fantasy series, #3 among all Prime Video TV shows, and #4 among all titles, with 9 days on the chart.

PRIME VIDEO PEAKS IN THE PRESS KIT

Territory Fantasy peak TV shows peak All titles peak Days on chart
United States #1 #3 #4 9
Canada – #4 #8 4
United Kingdom #1 #3 #3 38
Ireland #1 #3 #4 25
Spain #1 #4 – 44
Portugal #1 #6 #7 36

Those ranks followed the Leo, they did not cause it. Replies under Boreing’s July chart posts kept asking about a second season, which is the practical question a one-episode craft win cannot answer. The trophy proves a B.C. jury sat through Vortigern’s hour. The charts prove strangers in Lisbon and Manchester did too.

FROM NOMINATION TO PRIME VIDEO

  1. Late May 2026: The Foundation publishes the 2026 nominees, including Cunningham.
  2. July 4 and 5, 2026: Winners are announced at the Hyatt Regency Vancouver.
  3. July 6, 2026: Boreing congratulates Cunningham and Johnson.
  4. September 1, 2026: Prime Video opens the series in the United States and Canada.

On Saturday, September 12, 2026, at 10 AM PT, Cunningham is due on Dial the Gate, a Stargate oral-history show, to take questions as Major Paul Davis and as King Vortigern. That booking is the labor-pool story in miniature. The Leo did not smuggle Daily Wire into the Academy. It put a Vancouver regular on a provincial stage for an hour of European film he had already finished.

Frequently Asked Questions

When Were the 2026 Leo Awards Held?

The 2026 Leo Awards were held on July 4 and 5 at the Hyatt Regency Vancouver, with tickets sold through the Foundation’s own pages and preferred pricing for listed nominees. Night order follows craft and program blocks, and Best Lead Performance Dramatic Series sits inside the dramatic-series section rather than the motion-picture night.

Do Leo Craft Awards Require a Canadian Broadcast?

No. Eligibility is based on the completion date of the program, and the published rules say there is no requirement that the work be broadcast or exhibited. A 2023-cycle document also required a matching copyright notation in the tail credits, and later cycles keep that completion-year logic rather than an airdate window.

Who Directed the Other Pendragon Cycle Episodes?

Jeremy Boreing directed episodes 1 and 2, Island of the Mighty and The Vision of Taliesin. Ryan Whitaker directed episodes 4, 5, and 6. Jesse V. Johnson, who directed Cunningham’s hour, also directed episode 7, The Last True Bard, so the usurper’s death and the season’s last battle share a director.

Is This the First Screen Version of Lawhead’s Pendragon Cycle?

Yes. Lawhead has been publishing since 1982, and Boreing’s series is the first screen adaptation of the novels. Lawhead is credited as a producer, and the show uses his sub-Roman setting rather than a high-medieval court of plate armor.

Where Is The Pendragon Cycle Streaming?

DailyWire+ still carries the season. Prime Video added the United Kingdom, Ireland, Spain, and Portugal during summer 2026, then the United States and Canada on September 1, 2026. Kyle McCuiston’s score is out on Spotify and other music services as a separate soundtrack album.

Cunningham’s Leo is a real craft win on a three-name ballot. It is also a Vancouver story about a resident actor, a European shoot, and a provincial jury that never had to like Daily Wire to like the hour.
