Mercedes Built One AMG Cabriolet to Replace Two Cars
The 2026 Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 Cabriolet is the four-seat drop-top left after Mercedes killed the C-Class and E-Class convertibles, at 4,597 pounds and $100,045.
The 2026 Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 Cabriolet starts at $84,600, weighs 4,597 pounds, and now does the job Mercedes used to split across two convertibles. Mercedes-Benz USA quotes 443 horsepower and a 4.2-second run to 60 mph. A loaded loaner in Maryland crossed $100,045.
Four-seat drop-tops have thinned to a German pair plus the Ford Mustang. This AMG is the four-seat Mercedes left on that list, and it carries the mass, the options bill, and the missing V8 that came with folding two cars into one.
Mercedes Folded Two Convertibles Into One CLE
Mercedes retired the C-Class convertible and the E-Class cabriolet after the 2023 model year instead of giving either a new generation. The CLE coupe took over both two-door jobs, and the cabriolet followed. Production of the open car began in April 2024 at Bremen, with the AMG 53 version shown in the United States on May 6, 2024.

Mercedes-Benz USA called it the second open-top model in the current AMG family. The SL still exists as a two-seat sports car. The CLE is the four-seat car, and it has to cover buyers who once chose a C-Class drop-top and buyers who wanted the larger E-Class cabrio.
THE CONVERTIBLE CULL AT MERCEDES
- 2023 model year: C-Class convertible and E-Class cabriolet end without replacements of their own.
- October 2023: CLE coupe production begins as the shared two-door.
- April 2024: CLE cabriolet production starts in Bremen.
- May 6, 2024: Mercedes-Benz USA introduces the AMG CLE 53 Cabriolet at 443 hp.
- 2026 model year: the 53 cabriolet still starts at $84,600 before destination and options.
The CLE sits on a 113.2-inch wheelbase and stretches 191.0 inches, longer than the last C-Class convertible and about even with the last E-Class cabrio. You buy one silhouette now. The 300, 450, and 53 trims are how Mercedes still pretends it sells two cars.
4,597 Pounds Is the Bill for One Car
Mercedes-Benz USA lists the AMG-enhanced 3.0-liter inline-six at 443 hp from 5,800 to 6,100 rpm and 413 lb-ft from 2,200 to 5,000 rpm, with an electric auxiliary compressor and a 48-volt integrated starter-generator that can add up to 23 hp. Boost peaks at 22 psi. Overboost holds 443 lb-ft for 10 seconds. Power goes through an AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT nine-speed automatic to AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive, which can send 100 percent of torque to the rear axle.
THE CLE 53 CABRIOLET ON PAPER
- Output: 443 hp and 413 lb-ft, plus up to 23 hp from the starter-generator.
- Weight and pace: 4,597 pounds; Mercedes-Benz USA quotes 4.2 seconds to 60 mph.
- Economy: 19 mpg city and 26 mpg highway, 17.2-gallon tank, premium fuel.
- Footprint: four seats, 9.6 cubic feet of cargo, 40.3-foot turning circle with rear-wheel steering.
That 4.2-second claim is the factory number, and it is slower than BMW’s figure for the rival M car. Instrumented testing of the same AMG cabriolet has recorded 3.7 seconds to 60 mph and a 12.4-second quarter mile at 107.1 mph, so the car is quicker than the brochure when launched hard. It is still a 4,597-pound four-seater. The same testers weighed it 189 pounds heavier than the CLE 53 coupe, which is the folding roof, the extra bracing, and the reason this body style was never going to feel like a two-seat sports car.
Active rear-wheel steering is standard, and it is the trick that makes the 191.0-inch car park like something smaller. AMG RIDE CONTROL adaptive dampers, a 4-link front and 5-arm multilink rear, and drive modes that change throttle, exhaust, and damping are the rest of the homework. Comfort dulls the six. Sport and Sport+ are where the car starts answering the steering.
The Roof Drops in About 10 Seconds
The fabric top on the AMG cabriolet runs at speeds up to 37 mph and finishes in about 10 seconds, which is the difference between a panic stop in a shower and staying in the lane. A week-long loan in Maryland still spent five of seven days with the roof up, which is the honest climate for most of this car’s American life. With the top raised, the high beltline and the insulated cloth make the cabin feel closer to the coupe than to an old canvas LeBaron.
Extend your top-down driving enjoyment further into a cool evening or later into the season with the AIRSCARF neck-level heating system.

Vents in the front head restraints blow warmed air at three settings and taper with speed, so a cool night does not automatically mean the roof comes up. Aircap, the header deflector and rear mesh, is there for buffeting. Some drivers find the cabin already calm with the side glass up and leave Aircap stowed. Rear headroom is 36.0 inches, fine for a short hop and tight for adults on a long one. Cargo is 9.6 cubic feet, and that number is why weekend bags go in before the fourth person does.
The Burmester 3D system is a 710-watt amp and 15 speakers, including drivers in the front seats, built so the soundtrack does not collapse when the roof is gone. Steering-wheel touch pads still fight the driver. Climate and navigation on the large screen do not.
What $100,045 Buys in Options
The CLE 300 4MATIC Cabriolet starts at $69,400. The CLE 450 4MATIC Cabriolet starts at $78,900. The AMG 53 opens at $84,600 before a $1,350 destination charge, and the options stack is how a four-seat Mercedes reaches six figures without a V8.
THE MARYLAND LOANER’S ADD-ONS
- 20-inch wheels: $2,600, and they are the upgrade most likely to firm up the ride.
- AMG Night Package: $2,000 of blacked-out trim.
- AMG Dynamic Plus: $2,000 for dynamic engine mounts, red calipers, plus RACE and Drift modes.
- Destination: $1,350, after which the as-tested car landed at $100,045.
Dynamic Plus is the mechanical extra that matters. The mounts keep the inline-six from shaking the body under load, and Race Start is the launch program behind the quicker factory times. Drift mode can uncouple the front axle. Red calipers do not make the 107-foot 60-to-zero stop any shorter, but they are how AMG shows the package from the sidewalk. You can skip the 20-inch wheels and the blackout kit. Few AMG buyers do.
The M4 Convertible Clears 60 in 3.6 Seconds
At this money the CLE 53 is not shopping against a base Mustang. It is shopping against BMW’s four-seat M car and, if the budget stretches, a 911 with the roof cut off. Mercedes-Benz USA publishes 443 hp and a 4.2-second 0-60 for the AMG cabriolet. BMW’s own sheet for the 523 hp M4 Competition Convertible is 3.6 seconds and a $98,600 start, $14,000 above the AMG before either car grows options. The BMW also weighs 4,306 pounds, 291 pounds less than the Mercedes.
FOUR-SEAT DROP-TOPS AT THIS MONEY
| Car | Starting MSRP | Horsepower | 0-60 (factory) | Curb weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 Cabriolet | $84,600 | 443 hp | 4.2 sec | 4,597 lb |
| BMW M4 Competition xDrive Convertible | $98,600 | 523 hp | 3.6 sec | 4,306 lb |
| Ford Mustang GT Premium Convertible | $57,580 | 480 hp | not published | not listed here |
The 80 hp gap is the whole sports-car argument. The M4’s twin-turbo 3.0-liter six makes 523 hp and 479 lb-ft, uses an eight-speed, and does not offer rear-wheel steering on the convertible. The AMG answers with standard 4MATIC+, standard rear steer, Airscarf, and a cabin that a passenger on the Maryland loan likened to a 443-horsepower recliner. If the test is a back-road time, the BMW wins. If the test is a four-hour motorway run with the top down at dusk, the Mercedes is the one that still feels like a Mercedes.
Ford’s Mustang GT Premium Convertible starts at $57,580 with the 5.0-liter V8 at 480 hp, or 486 hp with the active valve exhaust, and a six-speed manual as standard. That is $27,020 under the AMG’s base price, before the Mercedes has added a single package. Porsche lists the 911 Carrera Cabriolet from $149,400, which is a different car aimed at a different buyer. The CLE 53 lives in the gap: too heavy to be the M4, too costly to be the Mustang, too much of a four-seat touring car to be a 911.
Buyers Still Want the Missing CLE 63
Talk around this cabriolet is mostly film of the roof dropping and the exhaust popping. The argument that keeps coming back is simpler. People who remember AMG convertibles with a 63 badge want that car, and this 53 is not it. Mercedes has shown a 3.0-liter six with an electric compressor, a mild-hybrid assist, and drive modes that fake some of the old V8 theater in Sport and Sport+. It has not put a volume V8 in the CLE cabriolet.
That is the rest of the reckoning. When two convertibles became one, the AMG version had to be a grand tourer first, because the people who used to buy an E-Class cabrio still needed somewhere to sit. The 4,597-pound curb weight, the 4.2-second factory sprint, the $2,000 Dynamic Plus pack, and the $100,045 as-tested sticker are what that choice looks like in 2026. A 2028-model facelift has already been photographed in tests, still as a six-cylinder CLE. The four-seat AMG drop-top that replaced two cars remains this one.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 Cabriolet Have Rear-Wheel Steering?
Yes. Mercedes-Benz USA lists 3-stage AMG parameter steering with electromechanical assist and active rear-wheel steering as standard, and the wall-to-wall turning circle is 40.3 feet, which is how a 191.0-inch four-seater hides its length in a parking garage.
What Fuel Economy Does the 2026 AMG CLE 53 Cabriolet Get?
Mercedes-Benz USA rates the cabriolet at 19 mpg city and 26 mpg highway on premium unleaded, with a 17.2-gallon tank and Bin30/SULEV30 emissions certification. Combined figures published alongside independent tests sit at 22 mpg.
Can You Operate the CLE 53 Convertible Top While Driving?
The power fabric roof will open or close at speeds up to 37 mph and completes the cycle in about 10 seconds on the AMG cabriolet, so a sudden shower does not require a full stop. The same family of CLE cabriolets also offers Aircap, a header wind deflector and rear mesh, for top-down buffeting.
How Much Cargo Space Does the CLE 53 Cabriolet Have?
Mercedes-Benz USA lists 9.6 cubic feet of cargo with the top in place. Rear shoulder room is 48.1 inches against 55.7 inches in front, which is why the second row is a two-adult emergency more than a touring seat.
