Jeff Daniels’ Reagan Film Stalls After Angel’s Prestige Bet

Angel Studios opened The Brink of War wide with Jeff Daniels as Reagan. An A CinemaScore could not stop a $5,013,871 finish.

Angel Studios opened The Brink of War in 2,083 theaters on August 14, 2026, and closed the run at $5,013,871. Jeff Daniels, 71, played Ronald Reagan opposite Jared Harris as Mikhail Gorbachev. Crowds that showed up gave it an A CinemaScore. They did not come back.

Writer-director Michael Russell Gunn shot the 117-minute PG drama inside Höfði House, the Reykjavik villa where the 1986 summit actually happened. The studio, still absorbing a spring backlash over Animal Farm, treated the film as a serious Cold War play, not a faith-circuit biopic. The bet was that a known liberal in Reagan’s chair would read as craft, and that craft would sell.

Angel Studios Opened Wide After Animal Farm

Angel spent the spring defending Andy Serkis’s Animal Farm, which arrived in U.S. theaters on May 1, 2026. Serkis later said the first trailer drew about 60 million views “of outrage,” with the left hearing a business sermon and the right hearing a soft defense of communism. The cartoon left theaters fast. The Guild still backed it. The ticket buyers did not.

CinemaCon in April had already lined up The Brink of War as the prestige answer, alongside other 2026 titles. SK Global and 2521 Entertainment made the picture. Angel distributed it. Gunn’s official log line put Reagan racing to salvage a nuclear deal that could dismantle arsenals or ignite disaster. The studio posted the trailer on April 13.

That is the film Angel asked people to buy: two men in a small house, not a cradle-to-grave saint picture. The 2024 Reagan movie with Dennis Quaid had already served that hunger, and it is coming back. Gunn needed a different product, and he needed a name.

The Gross Could Not Survive Week Two

The opening weekend did the work the rest of the run could not. The film took in $2,689,529, good for seventh place, then fell 76% in week two. Angel moved it to video on September 1 while a few hundred screens were still up. The-Numbers logs a domestic total of $5,013,871, 100 percent of the worldwide gross, with legs of 1.86 and an average run of 1.7 weeks a theater.

THE WEEKEND COLLAPSE

Weekend Rank Gross Theaters Change Cume
Aug 14 to 16 7 $2,689,529 2,083 – $2,689,529
Aug 21 to 23 14 $657,064 1,340 -76% $4,516,736
Aug 28 to 30 – $96,765 200 -85% $4,960,118

Friday put $1,124,995 on the board. Saturday slipped to $901,217. Sunday landed at $663,317. By September 3 the daily take was $6,642 from 200 theaters, and the cume stopped at $5,013,871. Opening weekend was 53.6 percent of the whole domestic gross, which is another way of saying the movie did not hold.

Two years earlier, Quaid’s Reagan opened to $7.65 million in 2,754 theaters over Labor Day weekend and finished at $30.0 million in North America. Same CinemaScore grade of A. Different math. Brink of War’s $1,291 opening per screen sat well below that $2,800 range. On Rotten Tomatoes, 71 percent of 48 reviews were fresh, and the Popcornmeter sat at 87 percent. Critic Peter Travers gave it 2 out of 4 and said it had “the visual punch of a book on tape.” Critic Kyle Smith called Daniels a fond, canny Reagan and preferred that tone to the 2024 film’s heavy praise. The people who bought tickets agreed with the warmer read. There were not enough of them.

Why Jeff Daniels Played Reagan

The casting fight started the day the trailer did. Journalist Megan Basham wrote that no one who loved Reagan would watch Daniels play him, and that the movie would flop because of that choice. Other replies called it the dumbest call they had seen and predicted a cartoon villain. They had the politics right and the performance wrong. Gunn told Daniels to suggest Reagan, not wear him like a mask, because a hard copy turns into caricature.

Daniels rode a bike around Chelsea with Reagan tapes in his headphones. Harris found Reagan playing on a loop in Daniels’s apartment and compared it to majoring in the man. Gunn’s gaffer walked into Höfði on a prep weekend and found Daniels already sitting in the chair Reagan used. The shoot ran 18 days in fall 2024. J.K. Simmons, another Michigan native, played Secretary of State George Shultz. Hope Davis played Nancy Reagan. Branka Katić played Raisa Gorbacheva.

The house becomes a character in the film and the country of Iceland is very proud of what happened in that house. They preserved it like a museum. So when we walked in there, it was 1986 still. Michael was able to get the same artwork brought back up and hung on the walls. So to be in the house, in the room, in the chairs, it was like being in a cathedral. You felt a presence there.

Jeff Daniels, actor, Awards Focus interview

Daniels has voiced Jefferson and played Washington. He says those jobs come to him; he does not hunt them. On this one he was blunt: “There are no politics in that room when you’re playing that.” The line was a working rule, not a press-tour dodge. It also ran against Angel’s Trump-critic casting pattern, which the studio’s own crowd already knew how to police. A clip of Daniels attacking Donald Trump’s second term recirculated in early September, and the old objection came back with it. The film had already left most theaters.

They Shot the Movie in Reagan’s Actual Chair

Gunn spent years on the script and interviewed Shultz before the secretary’s death in 2021. He also worked from summit transcripts. Iceland kept Höfði as a museum, so the company could hang the original artwork and walk the same rooms. Daniels called the house a cathedral. Harris, 63, used biographies and YouTube clips for Gorbachev’s cadence, then used scenes with Katić to open a private window before the table fights.

HOW THE COMPANY BUILT THE WEEKEND

  • The location: Principal photography used Höfði House, the seaside villa of the October 1986 meetings, with period art put back on the walls.
  • The method: Gunn asked Daniels to suggest Reagan’s voice and posture rather than push a full impersonation into caricature.
  • The homework: Daniels listened to Reagan tapes on bike rides; Harris walked in on Reagan playing 24 hours a day in the apartment.
  • The time: The feature debut wrapped in 18 days in fall 2024 after the August 5, 2024 casting announcement, when the project was still called Reykjavik.

Harris, who lived in England during the late Cold War, said Europe was more scared of Reagan than of Gorbachev, because peace through strength looked like a buildup with no obvious end. That fear is the air the movie is trying to recapture. Gunn said he wants people to leave with hope that sitting down with an adversary can still make a better world. Daniels, on a morning show, reached for John Lennon instead: “We’re all one person. We are all one world. You know, John Lennon wasn’t wrong in his song ‘Imagine.’” One film, two sermons. The conservative seats came for Reagan. The actor sold dialogue.

The Talks Broke on Star Wars

Reagan and Gorbachev went to Iceland in October 1986 for two days that were supposed to prepare a later summit. They walked into Höfði with nearly 70,000 nuclear weapons behind them. Declassified State Department records show the talks racing past protocol. Reagan asked if the cuts on the table could eventually cover cruise missiles, battlefield weapons, and submarine arms. Gorbachev said they could eliminate them. Shultz’s answer was “Let’s do it.”

The two sides reached broad agreement on cutting strategic forces by 50 percent over five years and moved toward killing intermediate-range missiles in Europe. Gorbachev offered hard verification. Reagan floated eliminating ballistic missiles over 10 years. Then the Soviet side tied the package to the Strategic Defense Initiative, the missile shield nicknamed Star Wars. Gorbachev wanted both countries bound to the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty for 10 years, with SDI work limited to the lab. Reagan would delay deployment. He would not kill the research.

THE WEEKEND IN REYKJAVIK

  1. October 9, 1986: Reagan leaves Washington for what he calls a private meeting, not a signing summit, covering arms, human rights, regional wars, and contacts.
  2. October 11, 1986: The first Hofdi sessions run late morning and afternoon; experts’ groups are ordered to work overnight and report back.
  3. October 12, 1986: The leaders stay past the planned noon close. Gorbachev holds out for language that would cage SDI. Reagan refuses. They leave in the dark with no document.

In Reagan’s diary from that night, he wrote that Gorbachev “wanted language that would have killed S.D.I. The price was high but I wouldn’t sell.” Gorbachev later recalled offering to walk back in and sign everything if Reagan dropped plans to “militarize space.” In remarks to troops in Keflavik that same day, Reagan said they had put “the most far-reaching arms control proposal in history” on the table and that the general secretary had rejected it. He also said they had moved further on intermediate missiles than anyone expected. The INF Treaty followed on December 8, 1987, in Washington. The bigger Iceland package never came back.

An A Score Did Not Mean a Second Ticket

The pre-release revolt said Reagan’s people would stay home. Opening weekend said otherwise. An A CinemaScore is the grade that crowd gives a movie it is willing to recommend. Former Vice President Mike Pence saw it on August 17 and Pence called the film inspiring, pointing to Daniels and Simmons and to Reagan’s stand at Reykjavik as a step toward the Soviet collapse.

Saw the movie “The Brink of War” today featuring inspiring performances by Jeff Daniels as President Reagan and J.K. Simmons as Secretary of State George Shultz. Highly Recommended for any freedom loving American who wants to understand how Reagan’s Unwavering Stand at Reykjavik set in motion the events that led to collapse of the Soviet Union.

Mike Pence, former U.S. vice president, on X

U.N. Ambassador Mike Waltz screened it at the Paley Center and folded Reagan into a peacemaker line beside President Trump. Paid amplify posts framed critics as rewriting 1980s history. That is the choir Angel already knows how to reach. The 76 percent drop is what happens when the choir comes once. Daniels’s own press tour did not help the encore. He told interviewers the world is still dangerous, that more countries have bombs than in 1986, and that leaders should get in the room. He also told a cable host the country was less aware of the danger then because “we didn’t have a CNN,” a channel that had been on air since 1980. The takeaway he kept repeating was talk. The takeaway Pence sold was the refusal to trade away SDI. Same two hours in Höfði. Different movies in their heads.

Dennis Quaid’s Reagan Returns on September 25

Angel has the film now streaming for Guild members, with a Blu-ray and DVD pack on sale after the September 1 video date. The theatrical map is finished. What is not finished is the other Reagan. Showbiz Direct is putting the 2024 biopic back out as a director’s cut on September 25, in about 600 theaters, with 10 extra minutes of Nancy in the Oval Office, Jack Reagan, and the ranch. That film’s audience score sat at 98 percent against a critics’ score in the high teens. It already proved a conservative house will pay for this president when the picture looks like a hymn.

Gunn made the other bet: a talky, location-true weekend, a liberal lead, no rubber Reagan mask, and a studio still trying to get past Animal Farm. Daniels sat in the real chair and played the talks as statesmanship. The grade on the way out the door was an A. The gross was $5,013,871. On September 25 the hymn gets another weekend, aimed at the seats that already showed they will buy a ticket twice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who Directed The Brink of War?

Michael Russell Gunn wrote and directed the film in his feature debut, after serving as showrunner on the Netflix limited series Thai Cave Rescue for SK Global. Producer John Logan Pierson is a partner on both projects. Gunn has said he spent years on the Reykjavik research and was given transcripts from the 1986 meetings.

What Is The Brink of War Rated, and How Long Is It?

The MPA rated it PG for language, thematic elements, and smoking, under rating bulletin 2935, certificate 55916, dated May 6, 2026. The running time is 117 minutes. Angel posted English and Spanish caption, dubbing, SDH, and audio-description options for theaters.

What Was the Project Called Before Angel Titled It The Brink of War?

SK Global announced the film on August 5, 2024, as Reykjavik, with Daniels, Harris, and Simmons already attached and production set for Iceland that October. Hope Davis, Branka Katić, and Aya Cash joined on October 15, 2024. Angel later released it as The Brink of War.

Did Reagan and Gorbachev Sign a Nuclear Treaty in Iceland?

No. They left Höfði on October 12, 1986, without a signed package after the SDI fight. They did sign the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty on December 8, 1987, at the White House, eliminating a class of ground-launched missiles. The far larger zero-nuclear idea discussed in Reykjavik was never completed.
