Google Messages Builds Nine In-Chat Games After Samsung’s Exit

Google Messages is testing nine Midnight in-chat games that copy iPhone’s GamePigeon list, aimed at Android RCS after Samsung ended its U.S. messaging app.

Google Messages is testing nine in-chat games, including Chess, Cup Pong and Darts, under the internal name Midnight. The titles sit in a beta labeled messages.android_20261002_00_RC00.phone.openbeta_dynamic. Google has not announced the feature, and it is not switched on.

The list copies the board, sport and party games iPhone owners have played inside iMessage since 2016, and it lands on Android after Samsung ended its own U.S. messaging app in July 2026.

Nine Game Titles Show Up in the Beta

On October 7, 2026, Abhishek Yadav posted screenshots of unreleased Google app code and named a new Games screen inside Messages. The same string block showed up in an APK teardown of that beta, with every title using a midnight_ prefix and a launcher label that simply reads Games.

The nine names in the resource file are Word Scramble, Chess, Cup Pong, Checkers, Pool, Basketball, Four in a Row, Crazy 8s and Darts. A generic string also labels a single item Game. That is a full casual-games shelf, not a lone chessboard taped onto a chat thread.

An independent teardown of a build that went out on October 6, 2026 found the same list, plus two extra labels that still use the old internal name: midnight_shortcut_title and midnight_marketing_hard_stop_title both say Midnight. The Games identity is new. The codename is not. The Midnight shortcut title first appeared in a Messages build tagged v20260817_05_RC00 that went out on August 24, 2026, when the feature was still a blank slot on the compose screen.

THE NINE TITLES IN THE BETA

Messages string Closest iMessage analog Kind of game
Word Scramble Anagrams, Word Hunt, Word Bites Word
Chess Chess Board
Cup Pong Cup Pong Party
Checkers Checkers Board
Pool 8-Ball, 9-Ball Sports
Basketball Basketball Sports
Four in a Row Four in a Row Board
Crazy 8s Crazy 8! Cards
Darts Darts Sports

Every name maps onto a title iPhone users already launch from a chat. The code does not say whether all nine will ship together, or whether a match is turn-based, live, or single-player.

Cup Pong, Chess and the iPhone Catalog

GamePigeon, the iMessage pack built by Vitalii Zlotskii, launched on September 13, 2016, the same day as iOS 10, as a free extension that lives only inside Apple’s Messages app. Its App Store listing still sells a multiplayer games via iMessage collection that includes Chess, Checkers, Four in a Row, Cup Pong, Basketball, Darts, Crazy 8! and pool as 8-Ball and 9-Ball.

Ten years later, Google’s Midnight list is that same mix: two classic boards, a connect-four clone, a beer-pong flick game, a basketball shot, darts, pool, a rummy-style card game, and a word scramble. Yadav put the comparison in one line when he posted the strings.

Basically GamePigeon (iMessage games) for Android

On iPhone, those games work because a move can live in the thread. You send a shot, the other person gets a notification, and the match sits next to the texts you were already writing. Chess and Checkers can stretch across a workday. Cup Pong is a ten-second flick. That rhythm is why a messaging app bothers with games at all: they give you a reason to open the same thread again without starting a new conversation.

Google does not need a Play Store download to make that habit if the games are built into Messages. The Play listing for the app already claims more than 10 billion downloads, and it is the RCS client Google wants on every Android phone. A Games button inside that client keeps the minutes in Google’s inbox instead of in a separate party-game app.

Galaxy Phones Already Lost Their Other Inbox

The timing is not a vacuum. Samsung’s U.S. end of service notice states the case in one sentence.

The Samsung Messages application has been discontinued.

Samsung, End of Service Announcement, United States

The cutoff applies to the U.S. market only. Phones on Android 11 or lower are not affected. Owners of the Galaxy S26 and newer devices cannot download Samsung Messages from the Galaxy Store. Everyone else lost the download after the July 2026 shutdown. Samsung says conversations transfer into Google Messages automatically, though the copy can take up to 24 hours.

U.S. Galaxy owners who already had to switch after the July cutoff now live in Google Messages whether they wanted extra toys or not. Samsung also says the old app becomes removable on One UI 9 in fall 2026 for devices on One UI 9.0 or higher. The default inbox is no longer a fork between two Android messengers. It is Google’s app, running RCS, with Gemini remix tools already in the thread.

THE PATH INTO ONE INBOX

  1. July 2026: Samsung Messages stops sending on affected U.S. Galaxy phones except to emergency numbers, and Google Messages is the replacement Samsung names.
  2. August 24, 2026: A Messages build tagged v20260817_05_RC00 adds a compose shortcut still labeled only Midnight.
  3. October 6, 2026: A later beta fills Midnight in with a Games launcher and nine titles.
  4. October 7, 2026: Yadav posts the Games list alongside unreleased Gmail agent tools and a Photos GIF editor.
  5. Fall 2026: Samsung says the old app can be uninstalled on One UI 9.0 or higher.

A Games shortcut is a small thing next to that sequence. It is also the first consumer-facing reason, besides RCS receipts and Gemini replies, to treat Messages as a place you linger rather than a pipe for SMS.

Next to the Camera, GIF and Location Buttons

The October 6 teardown places Games in the same shortcut window as the tools you already tap while writing a text. That is the compose tray, not a separate arcade tab buried in settings, and it is the detail that makes Midnight look like a chat feature instead of a Play Store overlay.

WHERE MIDNIGHT WOULD SIT

  • Gallery: Attach a photo from the library.
  • Camera: Shoot and send without leaving the thread.
  • GIF: Search or attach a moving clip.
  • Live location: Share where you are in real time.
  • Games: Open the Midnight launcher, still labeled Games in the user-facing string.

That placement is the whole product idea. You would start a match the same way you start a photo, from the person you are already talking to. The teardown also notes the shortcut is still dark; nobody has seen the live menu on a phone. Strings can describe a button that never ships, and Google has left unfinished Messages experiments in betas before.

Yadav’s October 7 post bundled the Games screen with two other unreleased surfaces: a Gmail control that lets Gemini pick up a task from the inbox, and a Photos GIF editor with a preview and speed control. All three were spotted in code, and he wrote that none of them were live. Messages is the one that copies a social habit Android never owned.

Will Midnight Games Work With an iPhone?

Almost certainly not in the way people will expect. GamePigeon runs inside iMessage. It is not an RCS service, and it does not accept a move from Google Messages. Google’s own product pages sell cross-phone RCS as high-resolution photos and typing indicators, read receipts, and better group chats with iPhone contacts. Games are not on that list.

Samsung’s footnote on RCS is narrower still: every chat member must have RCS on, Android users need Google Messages, and iPhone users need iOS 18 or later. That is a path for media and receipts. It is not a path into Apple’s iMessage app store, and it is not a path into GamePigeon. An Android user who wants Cup Pong with a friend on iPhone will still lose at the platform line.

WHAT WE KNOW

  • The catalog: Nine titles are named in the midnight_ strings, and the launcher title is Games.
  • The slot: Games is meant to sit in the compose shortcut row with Camera, GIF and live location.
  • The status: The shortcut has not been switched on, and Google has not announced it.

WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED

  • Multiplayer: Nothing in the strings proves a second player, even though the titles only make sense as two-person turns.
  • iPhone chats: No string ties Midnight to RCS threads with iOS 18, and GamePigeon remains iMessage-only.
  • The ship list: There is no sign that all nine titles will survive, or that any of them has a date.

If the matches are Android-to-Android only, Midnight still has a job. It gives two Google Messages users a reason to keep tapping the same thread. It does not punch a hole in the blue-bubble social loop that GamePigeon has fed since 2016. Calling it feature parity with iPhone overstates what the code can do.

RCS Loses Its Per-Chat Off Switch

The same Messages beta carries another change that has nothing to do with darts and everything to do with how tightly Google wants RCS wrapped around the app. Strings in that build describe a home banner whose title is Switch to RCS chats now. The body text says the Only send SMS and MMS messages setting is going away, and it offers a button to switch now or let the app update automatically.

Today that per-chat toggle is how you force a single thread back to SMS when RCS misbehaves. If the banner ships as written, the choice becomes global: RCS on for everyone, or RCS off for everyone, with SMS as a fallback when a rich chat fails. That is a smaller control surface, and it sits in the same beta that adds a Games launcher.

Read together, the two string dumps point at one inbox strategy. Samsung is out of the U.S. SMS business. The remaining Android client is being told to keep RCS on. The same client is being loaded with a party-game shelf that only pays off if you keep opening it. None of that requires Google to say the word games in a blog post. The code is doing the arguing.

Google Has Not Set a Launch Window

Presence of strings is a weak promise. The teardown that published the midnight_ block also warned that work-in-progress features get cut, renamed, or left to rot. Midnight spent from August 24 to October 6 as a nameless shortcut before anyone could see it was Games. It can sit another stretch as a labeled shortcut that never turns on.

What the beta does settle is the shape of the bet. Google is not building a new genre. It is installing the 2016 iPhone party pack into the Android app that already holds RCS, Gemini remix, and, in the United States, millions of Galaxy users who no longer have Samsung Messages. Cup Pong in a chat will not win an iPhone holdout. It can make the app those holdouts’ Android friends are forced to use a little harder to leave.

Until Google flips the switch, Midnight is nine names, a compose-tray slot, and a codename that leaked before the games did. The thread is waiting for a first move that has not been sent.
