Crystal Lake: A24 Drops Chilling First Look at Friday the 13th Series

Published

on

Peacock and A24 picked the perfect day to pull back the curtain. On Friday, March 13, 2026, the streamer released the first official images from Crystal Lake, its long-awaited Friday the 13th prequel series. The photos are dark, moody, and dripping with slasher DNA. And after years of delays, legal battles, and behind-the-scenes drama, fans finally have proof that Camp Crystal Lake is open for business again.

What the First Images Reveal

On March 13, which happened to fall on a Friday the 13th, Peacock released the first few images from the project, offering fans an early glimpse of what’s to come.1

One appears to show the hand of Pamela Voorhees (played by Linda Cardellini) holding a knife. Another captures the eerie atmosphere of Crystal Lake.2 A third image shows tangled sneakers on the floor of what looks like a boathouse, with a life preserver hanging in the background.

One image is a recreation of a shot in the opening sequence of the original Friday the 13th.3 That small detail alone tells longtime fans that this team knows the source material inside and out.

No trailer dropped alongside the images. The images look suspiciously like shots you’d see in a trailer, which makes some wonder if a teaser is right around the corner.3

Inside the Story: A Psychological Thriller, Not Just a Slasher

This is not a simple remake. Crystal Lake is a prequel story set in the world of Friday the 13th and aims to explore the tragic beginnings of the franchise’s most infamous legend.4

At the heart of the story is Pamela Voorhees. The character is known to horror fans as the original killer from the 1980 film, but the series digs into who she was before the bloodshed. Pamela is portrayed as a mother who once dreamed of a singing career but set those ambitions aside to care for her special needs son, Jason. When tragedy strikes and she loses him, her life spirals down a far darker path.4

Showrunner Brad Caleb Kane described the tone of the series in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. He said, “In many ways, it’s a psychological thriller. It’s a paranoid ’70s thriller. It has all of the DNA of a slasher without quite being a slasher. There are rivers of blood in the show.”5

That blend of character-driven drama and visceral horror is what sets Crystal Lake apart from previous franchise entries.

Brad Caleb Kane Steps Into Camp Crystal Lake

In August 2024, it was announced that Brad Caleb Kane would serve as the series’ new showrunner.6 He replaced Bryan Fuller, who had been attached to the project since its 2022 announcement.

Fuller confirmed his exit from the project in May 2024, noting that “A24 has elected to go a different way with the material.”7 Reports pointed to budget concerns, creative differences, and rising costs that pushed the project into turmoil.

Kane brought a steady hand. His resume speaks for itself:

  • It: Welcome to Derry (co-showrunner)
  • Tokyo Vice (executive producer)
  • Black Sails (executive producer)
  • Fringe (co-producer)
  • Warrior (executive producer)

Kane grew up obsessed with the franchise. He said, “From the moment I watched Jason Voorhees squeeze a guy’s eyeball out of its socket (in glorious 3D!) at the tender age of 8 years old, I knew my creative path was someday destined to converge with The Man Behind The Mask.”7

The project marks A24’s first major IP-driven project amid a recent effort to expand in a more commercial direction.7

Cast, Characters and Legacy Connections

The ensemble brings together fresh talent and direct ties to the 1980 original.

Actor Role
Linda Cardellini Pamela Voorhees
Callum Vinson Young Jason Voorhees
William Catlett Levon Brooks (likely police chief)
Nick Cordileone Crazy Ralph
Cameron Scoggins Dorf
Devin Kessler Briana Brooks
Gwendolyn Sundstrom Grace
Danielle Kotch Claudette
Phoenix Parnevik Barry
Nancy Nagrant Kay Christy

Ralph is better known as Crazy Ralph, and Barry and Claudette were the names of the first two victims in the original Friday the 13th.8 Their presence in the prequel links both timelines together.

Callum Vinson plays young Jason Voorhees, with Zachary Branch reportedly appearing in one episode as an adult Jason Voorhees.8 That tease alone should send a chill down any fan’s spine.

Michael Lennox directed the first through third episodes, Celine Held and Logan George directed the fourth through sixth, and Quyen Tran helmed the seventh and eighth.6

Filming Wrapped in New Jersey

Production on Crystal Lake started in New Jersey last June and wrapped in October. It was filming under the codename Mama’s Boy. Summer camp scenes were filmed in West Milford, lake scenes were filmed in Ringwood, and Blairstown stood in as downtown Crystal Lake, just like it did in the original movie. Some filming also took place in South Orange Village.9

This is the first Friday the 13th project to film in Blairstown since the 1980 original. The Jeep that was driven by Pamela in the original Friday the 13th has also been seen on set, along with the Elston Oil Supply truck driven by the character Enos in that film.10

Filming wrapped in late 2025 and the series is currently in post-production.11

When Does Crystal Lake Premiere?

A premiere date for Crystal Lake has yet to be announced by Peacock.12 However, multiple sources point to a late 2026 launch.

2026 still has one more Friday the 13th coming up in November, which could make a great date for either the premiere or the finale of Crystal Lake.4 Some reports suggest a December 2026 premiere on Peacock.13

The series will air on Sky UK and stream on Now in the United Kingdom and Ireland.6

For a franchise that has been dormant on screen for 17 years, Crystal Lake feels like more than just another reboot. It follows Friday the 13th: The Series, which aired for three seasons from 1987 to 1990, and will be the first project affiliated with Friday the 13th to emerge since a 2009 reboot of the original film.7 With A24’s prestige, Kane’s horror pedigree, and Linda Cardellini stepping into one of the genre’s most iconic roles, this series carries the weight of both expectation and opportunity. Whether you grew up watching Jason stalk through the woods on VHS or just discovered the franchise through streaming, Crystal Lake is shaping up to be the horror event of the year.
