BLAST Bounty Season 2 Tests an Untested CS2 Patch Under Real Ranking Stakes
BLAST Bounty Season 2 pairs 32 CS2 teams and an upset-driven prize format with a patch nobody has played, while real Valve ranking points hang in the balance.
BLAST Bounty Season 2 2026 kicked off on July 21 with 32 Counter-Strike 2 teams playing on a map and blast-damage system nobody has used in a professional match before. The online bracket runs through July 26, then the top eight fly to Malta for LAN finals from July 30 to August 2. Team Falcons enters as the reigning IEM Cologne 2026 Major champion. NAVI is not in the field.
Underneath that schedule sits a messier fact. Two systems built to reward chaos, BLAST’s upset-driven bounty format and Valve’s own ranking math, land on the same thirteen days as a patch teams have barely had time to touch. The points this event hands out will count toward Major invites for months.
A Bracket Where Underdogs Pick Their Own Fights
Thirty-two teams entered the bracket, 28 of them through the Valve Regional Standings and four on wildcard invitations, according to a tournament preview from Skin.Club’s esports desk. The bottom sixteen, the underdogs, choose their own opponents through BLAST’s Draft Show rather than drawing a random bracket.
Each top-16 seed carries a bounty into its first match. Beat a favorite and that bounty becomes cash. Half goes straight into the underdog’s winnings, and the other half rolls forward as their own bounty for the next round, a mechanic HLTV describes as applying to any win, not only upsets, so a favorite that keeps winning keeps stacking bounty too.
The event carries a $1,150,000 prize pool split between winnings and club share, with $500,000 going to bounty payouts and $650,000 guaranteed to every organization based on finishing position. Two elimination rounds online cut the field to eight before anyone boards a flight to Malta.

Valve Hands Pros an Untested Patch on Day One
Valve’s Counter-Strike 2 Season Five update, released July 8, reworked how C4 explosion damage spreads across every defusal map. Blast damage now runs on precomputed values baked into each map instead of a flat radius check, and the shockwave expands outward from the charge rather than hitting everyone in range at once. Cache returned to the Active Duty pool. Overpass left it.
A follow-up calibration patch went further, stripping out the old map-wide minimum point of damage and fixing cases where the new blast math misfired near map boundaries. Dropped weapons now get thrown further by nearby explosions too.
It has not been tested at S-tier level. Teams had a few weeks between the Cologne Major, the post-Major player break, and Bounty’s July 21 start, which is not long to rebuild bomb-plant timing and post-plant positioning around a mechanic that changed twice in ten days.
How Do These Results Feed Valve’s World Rankings?
Every match at Bounty also produces Valve Regional Standings points, the system that decides which teams get invited to future Majors and other Valve-sanctioned events. VRS pulls from roughly six months of results and gives extra weight to upsets specifically: a head-to-head adjustment shifts more points from loser to winner when a lower seed beats a higher one, and less when the result was expected.
That is the exact outcome BLAST’s format is built to produce. Underdogs choose favorites they think they can beat, half the reward money is earned specifically for pulling off the upset, and now a patch nobody has drilled sits on top of both systems as a third source of randomness. A result driven by unfamiliar C4 timing on a returning map still counts the same in the standings as one earned on a settled meta.
- What We Know – the $1.15 million prize pool, the 32-team bracket, the Season Five patch changes, and Falcons entering as titleholders are all confirmed.
- What’s Unconfirmed – the exact bounty dollar figure assigned to each top-16 seed has not been published, and HLTV’s own prize distribution chart still lists Malta’s placement payouts as TBD ahead of the finals.
Neither BLAST nor Valve has said how much of this event’s ranking movement will get treated differently because of the patch. It won’t be, by default. Points post the same way regardless of why a team won or lost.
Falcons Walk Into Malta as Reigning Major Champions
Falcons arrive off Nikola “NiKo” Kovač’s first Major trophy at IEM Cologne, and Bounty is their first chance to defend that form under an S-tier format built specifically to let a lower seed target them. Whether the win carries over onto a patch the roster has not had long to practice is the open question hanging over their opening rounds.
Several other rosters are just as unsettled. A handful of teams are fielding lineups that have never played an S-tier bracket together:
- Aurora enters with a rebuilt roster making its first S-tier appearance as a unit.
- MOUZ carries a revised lineup into its opening matches.
- The MongolZ arrive with a new roster configuration.
- HEROIC is adjusting to a fresh lineup in its first top-tier test since the change.
The absences say as much as the entries. NAVI, one of the sport’s most recognizable organizations, misses out from the top five of the world rankings entirely. Legacy and BetBoom also sit out this edition. BLAST’s own announcement of the invite list noted that reigning champions PARIVISION will not attend either, choosing to rebuild after a rough run at the Cologne Major instead of defending their title.
The Old Bounty System Plays Its Last Full Season
BLAST has already confirmed the bounty format changes ahead of the 2027 season. This edition still runs the original version: bottom-half teams draft their opponents, top seeds carry bounties, and wins convert bounty into both cash and momentum. Nobody outside BLAST has said yet what the 2027 version looks like.
That makes Bounty Season 2 2026 the last time this exact set of rules gets a full run. A tournament designed around upset economics is closing out its original design on a patch nobody has played competitively, feeding a ranking system that has no separate lane for results shaped by an unfamiliar meta. PARIVISION skipping the defense of their own title, weeks after winning it, is a reminder of how fast this particular format can turn a champion into a name on last season’s bracket.
Where to Watch the Opening Week
BLAST streams the tournament on its own Twitch and YouTube channels and through BLAST.tv, and the tournament hub tracks brackets, schedules and team pages as results come in. Every match time is listed in Central European Summer Time (CEST, UTC plus two hours), so convert before setting an alarm.
| Matchup | Time (CEST), Tuesday July 21 |
|---|---|
| M80 vs NIP | 12:00 |
| Nemesis vs Astralis | 14:30 |
| Nuclear TigeRES vs MOUZ | 17:00 |
| Alliance vs Wildcard | 19:30 |
Wednesday’s slate brings EYEBALLERS against FaZe, Nemiga against G2, HOTU against GamerLegion, and the marquee opener of 100 Thieves making their first S-tier appearance against Falcons. Friday adds HEROIC against The MongolZ and Liquid against Vitality, both first looks at how the rebuilt rosters handle a returning map under new explosion rules.
Frequently Asked Questions
What time zone are BLAST Bounty matches played in?
All match times are published in Central European Summer Time, which runs two hours ahead of UTC. That puts matches six hours ahead of US Eastern Time and nine hours ahead of Pacific Time, so a 19:30 CEST match starts at 13:30 Eastern and 10:30 Pacific.
Which teams received wildcard invitations to BLAST Bounty Season 2?
Liquid, 100 Thieves, EYEBALLERS, and OG received the four wildcard slots that filled out the 32-team field alongside the 28 teams that qualified through Valve Regional Standings position.
Does the bounty payout only apply when an underdog wins?
No. The rule applies to any winning team regardless of seed: the winner takes 50 percent of the loser’s bounty as cash, and the other 50 percent rolls forward onto the winner’s own bounty for its next match.
How often do Valve Regional Standings actually update?
Valve issues an official, significant update on the first Monday of every month, though live point calculations shift nearly daily as new match results come in from sanctioned events worldwide.
Where exactly is BLAST Arena Studios in Malta?
The venue sits in Attard, Malta, the same location BLAST has used for previous Bounty LAN finals on the island.
The online stage closes July 26. Malta crowns a champion August 2. The next monthly Valve Regional Standings reset lands August 3, a Monday, one day after the trophy is handed out.
