Genesis Bets the GV60 Magma Can Recast the Brand

Genesis priced the 2027 GV60 Magma at $69,950 and called Magma a halo, not a volume play, even as it shares 641 hp with a $59,900 Ioniq 5 N.

Genesis set the 2027 GV60 Magma at $69,950 and framed Magma as a halo, not a sales target. The first high-performance Genesis shares its 641-horsepower dual-motor layout with Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 N, which now lists from $59,900.

On July 29, 2026, the company pointed the opening cars at select retailers in California and New York. The wager is that a calmer cabin, a V6-style soundtrack and a scarce badge can recast Genesis, even if the hardware still lives next door to N.

Genesis Priced the First Magma as a Halo

Tedros Mengiste, chief operating officer of Genesis Motor North America, tied the car to a brand chapter rather than a monthly quota. The Magma is the first Genesis sold in the United States as a dedicated high-performance model, 11 years after the luxury marque spun out of Hyundai in 2015 and after 1.5 million global sales across more than 22 markets.

GV60 Magma marks an exciting new chapter for Genesis as we expand our lineup to meet the evolving needs and passions of our customers. As our first high-performance model, GV60 Magma combines exceptional performance, advanced technology and bold design to create a driving experience that is both emotional and engaging.

Genesis published a starting MSRP of $69,950, excluding tax, title, license, dealer fees and destination. That sits well under the $80,000 neighborhood some testers had penciled in before the number landed, and it still leaves Magma about a Hyundai N above the Ioniq 5 N rather than in Porsche territory.

MAGMA AT A GLANCE

  • Sticker: $69,950 MSRP before destination, tax and fees.
  • Peak punch: 641 hp and 583 lb-ft in Boost, from 166 kW front and 282 kW rear motors.
  • Sprint: 0-60 mph in 3.4 seconds with Launch Control, on an 84 kWh pack.
  • First stock: select Genesis retailers in California and New York.

Jarred Pellat, a Genesis representative speaking at the Lone Star Le Mans in early September 2026, was blunter about intent. Volume is not how the company is scoring Magma.

The Ioniq 5 N Now Starts $10,050 Lower

Hyundai lists the 2026 Ioniq 5 N with a starting MSRP of $59,900. Peak power is the same 641 hp and 478 kW. EPA range is 221 miles. Official 0-60 mph is 3.25 seconds, a tenth and a half quicker than Genesis quotes for Magma.

That $10,050 gap is the whole retail argument in one line. You are not buying more horsepower. You are buying a Genesis cabin, Magma styling and a smaller dealer map.

GV60 MAGMA VS IONIQ 5 N

Spec 2027 GV60 Magma 2026 Ioniq 5 N
Starting MSRP $69,950 $59,900
Peak power 641 hp 641 hp
Boost torque 583 lb-ft 568 lb-ft
0-60 mph 3.4 seconds 3.25 seconds
EPA range 222 miles 221 miles
Boost window 15 seconds 10 seconds
Battery 84 kWh 84 kWh

Magma’s extra 15 lb-ft in Boost and extra five seconds on the overboost timer are real. They do not rewrite the stopwatch. The Ioniq 5 N still gets to 60 first on Hyundai’s own figure, and it now does that from a sticker that undercuts Magma by five figures.

Top speed in dual-drive testing sat at 164 mph for Magma and 162 mph for the 5 N. Both cars can take a 350 kW, 800-volt charger from 10% to 80% in 18 minutes. On a 50 kW plug, Magma needed 73 minutes and the 5 N needed 81. Each uses a 10.9 kW onboard charger for overnight fills.

Both Cars Make 641 Horsepower From the Same Stack

The 641-hp dual-motor twins still share an 84 kWh pack, an electronic limited-slip rear, launch control, drift mode and a fake eight-speed that cuts torque on each paddle click. Miss a shift and either car will lug or bounce off a digital limiter. The trick should feel cheap. In both, it is the part people grin about.

Without Boost, Magma is about 600 hp and 546 lb-ft. The 5 N sits at 601 hp and 545 lb-ft. Press Magma’s steering-wheel Boost button and you get 15 seconds at the full 641 hp. Hyundai’s N Grin Boost holds the extra for 10 seconds. Genesis quotes an EPA-estimated range of 222 miles, one mile over the 5 N.

The 5 N is the lighter car by 77 pounds in that dual test, which helps explain the quicker 0-60 claim. Magma’s default road setting is GT, built for long fast cruising with power still on tap. Sprint is the attack mode, and on a tight mountain road it can feel like too much car between apexes. Hyundai’s N Race split is Sprint versus Endurance, the second one holding battery heat and charge for longer track sessions. The 5 N also carries N Drift Optimizer Pro with staged torque kick, a nerd tool aimed at people who actually want to hold a slide.

SHARED KIT AND MAGMA-ONLY THEATER

  • Shared hardware: dual motors, 84 kWh battery, e-LSD, launch control, drift mode, eight virtual gears, 10% to 80% in 18 minutes on a 350 kW plug.
  • Magma modes: GT as the default, Sprint for the extra shove, plus MY Mode to mix the two, with Boost for 15 seconds.
  • 5 N modes: N Race with Sprint and Endurance, N Grin Boost for 10 seconds, and N Drift Optimizer Pro.
  • Sound brief: Magma uses a deeper V6-style rumble that does not hit the fake limiter until 9,000 rpm; the 5 N borrows a turbo four from the Elantra N.

Magma’s e-ASD+ pipes that V6 impression through two external speakers as well as the cabin, with a Goodwood-inspired palette. Genesis posted the sound itself.

The 5 N still feels like the sharper, younger car on a winding road. Magma waits a beat, then hits. That gap is tuning and tires, not a different electric architecture.

What the Extra Money Buys Inside

This is where Genesis spends the $10,050. Magma’s first performance bucket seats are suede in Obsidian Black with orange stitching. The driver’s seat moves 10 ways, including a cushion extension; the passenger seat moves eight. Both get heat and ventilation. The 5 N’s buckets are firmer, six-way and manual, in synthetic trim, also heated and ventilated.

Genesis puts infotainment and gauges on one 27-inch OLED with Magma graphics. Hyundai splits the job across two 12.3-inch panels, and the N’s drive-sound-shift menus take a while to learn. Magma’s center stack still uses the rotating crystal sphere that becomes the gear selector on start-up. The 5 N keeps its shifter on a steering-column stalk, with four extra buttons on the wheel that Magma moved to the dash.

Audio is not close. Magma’s Bang & Olufsen system uses 18 speakers, a 14-channel amp and 1,400 watts. The 5 N’s eight-speaker Bose sounds thin next to it. Outside, Magma is the curvy hatch with a real wing, canards, fender breathers and 21-inch matte forged wheels. The 5 N is the pixelated hot hatch with a roof spoiler. Magma Orange is the namesake paint; Uyuni White, Vik Black and Makalu Gray Matte are the quieter options.

That does not change the fact that both cars still ask you to live with about 220 miles of rated range. Buyers who want 300 miles will look elsewhere. Buyers who want this kind of fake gearbox and this kind of shove have two doors into the same platform.

California and New York Get the Opening Stock

Genesis has more than 190 independent U.S. retailers. Magma does not use that network. The July 29 release sent the first cars to select stores in California and New York, the EV-heavy markets the brand wants as a beachhead. The company also calls the rollout “highly limited.”

That scarcity is the bet working as designed. A halo that sits on every lot is just another trim. A halo you have to hunt in two states behaves like AMG used to, even if the motors are shared with a Hyundai you can order almost anywhere.

Ownership extras try to finish the luxury pitch. Magma buyers get complimentary scheduled maintenance for 3 years or 36,000 miles, a 5-year/60,000-mile new-vehicle warranty, and 10-year/100,000-mile coverage on the high-voltage battery. A built-in NACS port opens about 36,000 Tesla Superchargers plus a growing IONNA network. The 5 N now has NACS too; on a Supercharger it needs about 30 minutes for 10% to 80%, versus 18 minutes on a 350 kW CCS plug with the included adapter.

Racing Is Doing the Work the Crossover Cannot

Put Magma next to Cadillac’s Optiq-V in a driveway photo and the internet still shrugs. Some drivers will not buy a Korean luxury badge. Some will not call a roughly two-ton electric crossover a hot hatch. The road car cannot close that argument alone, which is why Genesis Magma Racing is already in the World Endurance Championship, 499 days after the team was announced.

At the Lone Star Le Mans in early September 2026, the No. 17 car finished seventh, a second top-10 in a young program. Amanda Niklowitz, speaking for Genesis in Texas, called WEC a way to put the name in front of new European markets and U.S. buyers who say they care about fun to drive. Pellat tied that same weekend back to the street car.

Right now, we’re not viewing the Magma program through a lens of volume or sales targets. It’s about creating a certain halo for the brand that elevates our entire product portfolio.

Jarred Pellat, Genesis representative, Lone Star Le Mans, early September 2026

That is the sentence the $69,950 Magma has to live up to. The Magma GT3 concept at Le Mans sits beside the Magma GT show car as the next chapter of that halo, a mid-engine idea and a GT3 brief that would finally give Magma a shape the Ioniq 5 N cannot share.

Petrol Magmas Are Already on the Map

MAGMA’S FIRST YEAR ON THE CLOCK

  1. November 2025: Genesis stages the Magma program and GV60 Magma production car as the start of a “luxury high performance” decade, with the Magma GT concept as the halo sketch.
  2. June 2026: the Magma GT3 concept appears at Le Mans as the team completes its first 24 Hours.
  3. July 29, 2026: U.S. pricing lands at $69,950, with first retail stock aimed at California and New York.
  4. Early September 2026: Magma Racing scores seventh at the Lone Star Le Mans, and the first GV60 Magmas begin reaching those select stores.

Niklowitz said the Magma lineup will grow and “could be ICE or EV.” That matters in the United States, the Middle East and other markets where a petrol G80 or GV80 Magma would reach buyers the electric GV60 cannot. The first U.S. Magma remains a scarce 641-hp crossover you order in two states, $10,050 above an Ioniq 5 N that still wins the dragstrip on paper.

If Magma works, Genesis gets a performance identity the rest of the range can borrow. If it does not, the company has spent a racing budget and a crystal gear knob to sell a nicer Hyundai N to a short list of coastal dealers. The car is fast either way. The bet is whether anyone treats it as a Genesis.
