iFLYTEK Bets a 4.2 mm Notebook Can Win Europe

iFLYTEK’s AINOTE 2 picked up four awards at IFA 2026 for a 4.2 mm E-Ink notebook built around meetings, not movies.

The Hefei speech company is stacking those trophies, a Frankfurt cloud, and a later Europe shop launch behind a Chinese AI slate that still asks offices to put a microphone on the table.

iFLYTEK Walks Out of IFA With Four Awards

On September 7, iFLYTEK said AINOTE had been named in four IFA 2026 honors, led by t3n’s Pioneers Award for Best of IFA 2026. The same post listed Trusted Reviews Best in Show, The Shortcut Award, and a Gadget Flow Award, and pointed visitors to Hall 4.2, Stand 115, before the Berlin show closes on September 8.

IFA runs September 4 to 8. Vincent Zhan, iFLYTEK’s vice president, used the Berlin week to argue that the firm’s speech and translation stack now belongs in ordinary work tools, with “reliability and security” designed in rather than bolted on.

The Record Is 4.2 mm, Averaged Across Nine Points

Guinness World Records certified the AINOTE 2 (model XF-DX-B311E) on September 18, 2025, as the thinnest E-ink tablet, with an average thickness of 4.2 mm (0.165 in). Judges measured nine points on the slab three times each, then rounded the mean. Chengdu Doxent Technology Co. Ltd. is named as the manufacturer.

The finished device is 247 x 178 x 4.2 mm and 295 g without a case. iFLYTEK sells the 10.65-inch model for $649 in gold, with a 30-day return window and a one-year warranty that replaces the unit instead of repairing it. The 8.2-inch AINOTE Air 2 is listed at $499, in gray, at 230 g and 5-6.2 mm thick.

HOW THIN THE RIVALS ACTUALLY ARE

That 4.2 mm shell is 0.4 mm thinner than the Boox Go 10.3 and 0.5 mm thinner than the reMarkable 2. It is also 80 g lighter than the Go 10.3 and 108.5 g lighter than the reMarkable 2. reMarkable’s later Paper Pro, an 11.8-inch color slate, is 5.1 mm thick and listed at $579, so the Norwegian line gave up the thinness boast when it added a front light and color.

What the AINOTE 2 Puts on a Meeting Table

The panel is a 10.65-inch flexible E-Ink sheet at 1920 x 2560 and 300 PPI, with a matte writing layer and a Wacom EMR stylus in the box. Inside are a Rockchip RK3576 octa-core chip with a 6T NPU, 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB of storage, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.4, and a 4000 mAh battery. The software is Android 14 with Google Play preinstalled, so Calendar, Drive, and office apps are not a closed-garden afterthought.

iFLYTEK’s own copy says the slate can turn a 2-hour meeting into structured notes in 3 minutes. During a session it records audio, labels speakers, and translates while you write. Afterward it converts ink to text, builds a summary, and can push tasks toward Google Calendar or Outlook. A dedicated AI key is the trigger; the product page says the models do not run in the background and that user data is not used to train them.

AINOTE 2 ON PAPER

• Speech to text: Real-time transcription in 18 languages, listed as free and unlimited on the Starter plan.
• Live translation: 14 languages, same unlimited pitch.
• Handwriting: Conversion in 133 languages, with OCR that the company says can also run on the device.
• Microphones: Four mics in the 4.2 mm body, which is the hardware that makes the meeting pitch more than a typing demo.

The smaller Air 2 keeps the same basic note and speech idea in an 8.2-inch shell with a 2600 mAh battery, 4 GB of RAM, 32 GB of storage, and 293 PPI. It adds an adjustable front light and a camera for scanning paper, which the 10.65-inch record holder does not advertise. It does not get offline transcription, even if you pay for Pro.

Offline Transcription Is the Paid Upgrade

Core capture, handwriting, recording, and OCR can run without a network, which is the line iFLYTEK repeats for lawyers, HR, and anyone who will not put a board meeting on a public model. Regional storage is on Amazon Web Services. European customer data is stored in Frankfurt under GDPR rules.

The catch you actually buy is narrower. Unlimited cloud transcription minutes are already on the free Starter plan. offline voice transcription on Pro is the extra, and on AINOTE 2 it covers English, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean, with more languages promised later. Starter still syncs only notes edited in the last 50 days. Pro adds Gemini 3 Pro beside GPT-5, longer sync, and, on the annual plan, Care+ hardware cover for up to two years with one free replacement.

STARTER VERSUS PRO

A 90-day Pro trial auto-renews unless you cancel; iFLYTEK says paid periods are not refunded. Anyone who activates an Air 2 by October 31 is being offered five years of Pro at no extra charge, which is a clear tell that the company wants the smaller slate in bags before European retail is fully stood up.

Hands-on testers keep finding that the clever layer still wants a live connection. iFLYTEK’s privacy policy is blunter than the booth script: when you use LLM features such as meeting minutes, open Q&A, or circling ink to ask a question, the selected content goes from the tablet to a third-party AI provider’s servers and does not pass through iFLYTEK’s own. Local recording is real. The “ask the model” step is not a closed box.

Google Play on Paper Is the Category Break

reMarkable sold focus by leaving microphones and app stores off the slab, so a notebook could not become another phone. Boox did the opposite, shipping Android on E-Ink years ago, and the Go 10.3 already got within 0.4 mm of this record. Neither one is a speech company. iFLYTEK is, and it put four mics, speaker labels, 18-language transcription, and Play Store apps inside a body those two never shipped together.

People who already bought the AINOTE 2 talk less about Guinness and more about throwing the screen onto a laptop, which is an Android habit, not a paper-tablet one. That is the quiet admission in the category. Once Google Play is on the desk, the device is a thin computer that happens to look like paper, and the old promise of a closed notebook is gone.

The August 2026 firmware push leans into that. iFLYTEK added PDF pages inside notes, a floating toolbar, and an AINOTE Skill that can send notes and calendar items into Claude Code and Codex. The record holder is being aimed at people who already live in docs, tickets, and agents, not at readers who wanted a quieter Kindle.

Frankfurt Is the Trust Layer for Europe

The U.S. Bureau of Industry and Security added iFLYTEK to its Entity List on October 9, 2019, over human-rights concerns tied to high-technology surveillance in China. That listing is still the first search result a European buyer hits. It is also why the Berlin script leans so hard on GDPR, Frankfurt, on-device OCR, and a claim that data is not used for training.

The AINOTE series is due to go on sale through online and offline channels in Europe later this year. German shop listings already start around €568, so the “launch” is less about first stock and more about a branded retail path, local support, and a privacy story an IT team can file. iFLYTEK also brought 40 g AI glasses to the same stand, but the notebook is the object the awards landed on.
