HONOR’s Sold-Out Robot Phone Still Cannot Leave China

HONOR sold more than 400,000 Robot Phones in pre-orders, then emptied every e-commerce listing in one minute on August 18. The HONOR Robot Phone is a 248 g Android flagship with a 200-megapixel camera on a folding titanium arm. It is still a China-only phone, and it does not run Google apps.

That is the split at the center of the launch. The hardware can replace a separate pocket gimbal in a reporter’s bag. The software stack, the repair path, and the first production run all stop at the Chinese storefront.

A 200-Megapixel Camera That Folds Into the Slab

From the front, the Robot Phone looks like a short flagship. HONOR fitted a 6.31-inch LTPO OLED that runs from 1 to 120 Hz, peaks at 6,800 nits, and uses 4,320 Hz PWM dimming under NanoCrystal Shield glass. Flip it over, and a titanium module sits in the upper back until the camera app, a gesture, or YOYO wakes it.

The arm is HONOR’s 4-DoF Titanium Agile Gimbal, built from more than 100 precision parts across 60 manufacturing steps and more than 100 patents. HONOR says the whole mechanism is 65% smaller than a mainstream handheld gimbal and 200% stronger, driven by a 2.6 g titanium motor that can slew at 360 degrees per second. With the arm stowed, the body is 151.4 x 72.9 x 9.6 mm. With it open, length stretches to 190.5 mm. Weight stays 248 g, and the rating is only IP54.

The moving camera is a 200-megapixel 1/1.28-inch sensor at f/1.6. Beside it sit a 200-megapixel 1/1.4-inch periscope with 2.7x optical zoom and a 50-megapixel ultrawide that covers 122 degrees. The front camera is 50 megapixels. Video tops out at 4K at 120 fps, with 10-bit ARRI LogC3 available up to 4K at 60 fps. Inside are Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, HONOR’s H1 imaging chip, a 7,060 mAh silicon-carbon battery, 120 W wired charging, and 50 W wireless charging. Storage is 12 GB of RAM with 512 GB, or 16 GB with 1 TB. Colors are Silver and Gray. The model number is APH-AN00, on MagicOS 10 and Android 16.

Pre-Orders Cleared 400,000 Before the Open Sale

HONOR first showed the idea with the Magic 8 series in October 2025, then put a working unit on the floor at Mobile World Congress in March 2026. The company took it to Cannes and the 28th Shanghai International Film Festival before the Guangzhou event. The English launch note still talked about filmmaking for consumers worldwide. The price list that followed named only China.

THE ROAD TO A ONE-MINUTE SELLOUT

The base phone is 9,999 yuan (about $1,480) for 12 GB of RAM and 512 GB. The 16 GB and 1 TB model is 12,999 yuan. Li said those pre-orders had already gone past 400,000 units, a figure he tied to a year when the global phone market had shrunk by more than 10% and memory prices were rising. Each sale includes lifetime YOYO SVIP and a pack with a magnetic stand, a lanyard, and a 120 W charger. HONOR still has not named a country outside China that can buy this first Robot Phone.

Why ARRI Signed a Phone That Cannot Leave China

The Robot Phone is the first commercial product of HONOR’s Cinematic Imaging Partnership with ARRI, and it carries a “co-engineered with ARRI” label. ARRI’s own note, dated August 12 in Munich, says this is the first time its image science has shipped in a consumer device, and that the phone will initially be available in China.

What actually landed is a mobile cut of the cinema pipeline, not an ALEXA sensor in a slab. In ARRI CINEMA mode the main camera records ARRI LogC3 on a consumer phone, with ARRI Wide Gamut 3 and on-screen ARRI Looks. HONOR says the H1 chip does noise reduction in the RAW domain, processes 14-bit 4:4:4, and outputs 10-bit LogC3 and 4:2:2. The company claims an 8 dB gain in video signal-to-noise and up to 14 stops of dynamic range. Footage can go into DaVinci Resolve with ARRI LUTs. False color and peak focus are in the same toolset.

James Li put the same bet in plainer words at the Guangzhou event, saying hardware sets the floor for image quality while algorithms deliver the leap, and that aesthetics decide the rest. ARRI and HONOR say a joint lab in Hengdian is still working on sensors, dynamic range, and capture-to-post workflows. The next public stop for that work is not a global Robot Phone. It is the Magic9 series on September 28, which Li said will carry the AI, imaging, and compute the Robot Phone paid for. The moving arm stays behind.

The Pocket Camera the Robot Phone Is Built to Replace

Trade-show kits still split the job. A camera flagship such as a vivo X300 Ultra does stills. A DJI Osmo Pocket 3 does the moving video. HONOR’s pitch is that one 248 g phone now covers both, because the main sensor sits on a motor instead of in a fixed bump. The dedicated pocket camera still wins on a few things that matter in the hand: it is lighter, it uses a larger 1-inch sensor, and anyone can buy one.

ROBOT PHONE VERSUS OSMO POCKET 3

DJI’s Osmo Pocket 3 1-inch sensor specs still describe a specialist tool: three microphones, a 2-inch 700-nit screen, and a battery you can swap via accessories. It cannot place a call, run YOYO, or zoom 2.7x on a second 200-megapixel sensor. The Robot Phone cannot be ordered in London or Los Angeles. For anyone outside China who still has to film a show floor, the two-device bag remains the kit that actually ships.

YOYO Gets a Neck on MagicOS Only

The arm is also how HONOR wants the phone to behave like a small robot. YOYO Robot Mode mixes subject tracking, voice-source localization, gesture control, and physical movement so the camera can pan and tilt without a second operator. HONOR lists cinematic moves by name, and it opened an Agent Skills interface so other software can drive the gimbal.

• FPV and FPV Vertical: Points the lens with the phone’s motion, including upright social framing.
• AI SpinShot: Rotates the gimbal 90 or 180 degrees on a tap while recording.
• Subject tracking: Pans and tilts to keep a person in frame for vlogs, lives, and calls.
• Voice localization: Turns toward the speaker when more than one person is talking.
• Hands-free gestures: Deploys the arm and fires a shot without touching the glass.
• Auto Execution: Runs multi-step tasks across apps from one spoken request, on Alibaba’s Tongyi Qianwen model.

Early units already show the limits of that neck. Auto-tracking lets go once the subject walks out of frame, and the motor writes a clicking track onto the audio if you leave the room mic open. A reviewer who spent time with a unit in early September wanted the same moving camera paired with Gemini Live. That pairing is not on this phone. Google services are not part of the China software, and Gemini is not either. YOYO can look around a room and describe it. It does that on MagicOS, in China, on a device HONOR will not sell in the markets where Gemini Live already runs on slab phones that cannot move their cameras.

68 Cables Sit Between the Gimbal and the Board

Fang Fei, president of HONOR’s product line, said the industrial design went through more than ten versions over half a year, because the team had to drop a mechanical system into a body that was already full of chips, cells, and heat pipes. The motor ended up at 2.6 g, about the weight of half a sheet of A4 paper, using titanium and shield steel. Between the gimbal and the motherboard sit 68 cables, 19 of them coaxial, and those cables have to flex every time the arm lifts, drops, or spins. The phone still had to pass the same drop and tumble tests as a normal flagship, which a handheld gimbal never does.

One or two months before launch, Fang said the flip mechanism’s service life was only about one year, far short of a phone people keep for several years. In one week the team ran 18 material solutions, pulling in materials, modules, complete-machine, and R&D groups, and stretched the design life to five years. That scare is the honest review of this product. A 200-megapixel sensor on a motor is a camera story. A hinge that must survive drops with 68 moving cables is why the first run stays where HONOR can service it.

Clips of a stalled arm have already made the rounds on import units, which is the failure mode you would expect, not a surprise. HONOR’s answer for now is a small China production run and a five-year target on paper. The company has not published a global service plan for a robotic camera that folds into a 9.6 mm body.

Grey Imports Fill the Hole HONOR Left

By early September, grey-import shops were already listing China-spec APH-AN00 units, including 12 GB Gray phones on Japanese storefronts. That is the actual international launch: a China ROM, no Gemini, and a hinge you will have to mail back if it dies. HONOR’s own overseas business is not the problem. Li said overseas volume rose 20% in the first half of 2026, with more than ten countries above 10% share. The Robot Phone is the product that business cannot carry yet.

On September 28 the Magic9 series is due to inherit the imaging, AI, and compute the Robot Phone funded, including more of the ARRI pipeline on a phone HONOR already knows how to sell abroad. The titanium arm, the 2.6 g motor, and YOYO’s physical neck remain a China exclusive that sold out in one minute at 9,999 yuan. Until HONOR builds a second Robot Phone it will actually export, the most complete version of this idea still sits on the wrong side of the store.
