Ripple Treasury GSmart AI Cites Policy Before Cash Moves

Ripple Treasury’s GSmart update sells AI that cites policy and waits, as Gartner says Fortune 500 firms may run over 150,000 agents by 2028.

Ripple Treasury expanded GSmart on September 10 with AI agents that cite a policy clause, then wait for a person before any cash moves. The company calls it the industry’s first governed AI for enterprise treasury.

The pitch sits against a Gartner forecast that the average Fortune 500 firm will have over 150,000 agents in use by 2028. Only 13% of organizations think they have the right agent governance in place.

GSmart Agents Propose a Sweep and Then Stop

Ripple announced a major expansion of GSmart, the AI layer already running inside Ripple Treasury. It is in production with enterprise customers, not a fresh pilot. New policy-governed tools cover forecasting, liquidity, risk, reconciling accounts, and reporting.

Math and interpretation are split on purpose. A calculation layer runs the figures. The AI reads policy, spots patterns, and explains a recommendation. Treasury staff keep sign-off on every financial action.

THE THREE LAYERS IN THE SEPTEMBER 10 RELEASE

  • Orchestrated agents: Each one watches a process, proposes a move, names the policy behind it, and waits for approval before anything runs.
  • Knowledge Studio: Teams load internal rules here, and every proposed action is checked against those controls before it reaches a person.
  • Ask GSmart: A chat box inside Analytics Studio answers questions from treasury data without writing a payment.

Agents that can move or commit cash are not a prompt window. Ripple Treasury’s product card says an agent proposes a sweep amount, a hedge adjustment, or a payment to hold, then cites the exact policy clause rather than a paraphrase. The proposal, the citation, the approver, and the timestamp are stored. The figures inside that proposal come from the calculation layer, so the model is not asked to invent a number.

Every CFO is under pressure to embrace AI, but they’re equally responsible for ensuring every financial decision is explainable, governed and compliant. Rather than asking customers to blindly trust an AI system, GSmart works within each organization’s own treasury policies to surface recommendations transparently, while ensuring humans remain in control of every decision. This isn’t simply AI-native treasury, but rather treasury-native AI.

Renaat Ver Eecke, SVP of Ripple Treasury, September 10 announcement

Ver Eecke posted the same case on X the day of the launch, aimed at the office of the CFO rather than at token traders.

Governed AI is a different product from autonomous AI. This release is built as the former. The selling point is that the software will not pay.

Over 150,000 Agents and a 13% Governance Gap

Gartner published that forecast on April 28, 2026, from its Digital Workplace Summit in London. The 2028 figure is up from less than 15 agents in 2025 for an average global Fortune 500 firm.

Max Goss, Gartner’s senior director analyst, said CIOs are already dealing with an ungoverned sprawl of agents that exposes firms to misinformation, oversharing, and data loss. He said firms need a balance: govern the agents, and still let staff use sanctioned tools.

Treasury is a hard place to get that wrong. A bad summary in a chat bot is an irritation. A bad cash sweep is a control failure with money attached. Ripple’s release borrows Gartner’s gap on purpose. It is selling a paper trail as much as a forecast.

Knowledge Studio Turns Policy Into a Gate

Knowledge Studio is the leash. Teams upload policy documents or type the rules, and the studio turns that static text into the checks agents must pass. Approvals and overrides tighten that tenant’s guardrails over time. Ripple says the model itself is never trained on the customer’s data, and each client’s data stays isolated.

You can set autonomy limits per agent and take them back. For anything that can move or commit cash, the sequence does not change: propose, cite, wait.

WHAT GSMART CAN PROPOSE AND WHAT IT CANNOT DO

Tool Job Cash movement
Orchestrated agents Watch a process and propose a sweep, hedge, or hold, with a clause attached Wait for a person
Knowledge Studio Turn uploaded policy into the controls those agents must pass Does not pay
Rebalance Propose cash moves against limits and funding order Nothing moves on its own
Risk Insights Flag exposure gaps, policy breaches, and hedge drift Staff still approve related activity
Ask GSmart Answer plain-language questions from governed treasury data Does not send funds

Fraud Protection flags payments that break from a firm’s normal pattern before they clear. Document Capture pulls data from checks, remittances, and bank statements. Those jobs still sit inside the same gate. Ripple’s own line on the product card is blunt: GSmart proposes. It does not move money on its own.

The $1 Billion Desk Behind the Agents

GSmart is not a crypto wallet with a chatbot glued on. It sits on the treasury platform Ripple bought when it announced a $1 billion acquisition of GTreasury.

HOW RIPPLE TREASURY GOT TO THIS LAUNCH

  1. October 16, 2025: Ripple announces it will buy GTreasury for $1 billion, a system then trusted by over 1,000 customers across 160 countries.
  2. 2026: Ripple adds native digital-asset tools so cash and tokens can sit in one treasury view.
  3. April 28, 2026: Gartner warns that agent sprawl will hit over 150,000 agents per Fortune 500 firm by 2028, with 13% saying governance is ready.
  4. September 10, 2026: Ripple Treasury expands GSmart with policy-cited agents that wait for a human.
  5. September 28, 2026: Sibos opens in Miami, where Ripple Treasury plans to show the wider platform.

Ver Eecke ran GTreasury as CEO at the time of the deal and now leads Ripple Treasury as SVP. Brad Garlinghouse, Ripple’s CEO, sold the purchase as a way to put idle cash to work and to speed cross-border payments. In April 2026 he gave the scale in plain terms. He said GTreasury orchestrated $13 trillion of payments in 2025. “Zero percent of those were through stablecoins or crypto.”

Token traders will try to read GSmart as a new XRP rail. The 2025 volume Garlinghouse cited still ran off crypto, and this software still stops for a human signature. The desk Ripple bought is doing AI work inside cash operations that the rails have not yet moved.

Why 60% of Eligible Teams Use Risk Insights

Ripple says GSmart is already on across its enterprise base. Adoption is uneven by tool, and the company is careful to count only eligible customers.

60% of eligible customers have enabled Risk Insights, which surfaces exposure anomalies and policy breaches. 44% of eligible customers are using Forecast Insights, which compares forecasted and actual cash flows to spot liquidity gaps that have not hit the account yet.

Those are watchers, not payers. A team can turn on a drift alert without handing an agent the right to sweep cash. That is likely why the take-up is already this high on a platform that still requires a person to sign. Features are opt-in. A treasurer can leave the conversational layer off and still run the older cash tools.

Sibos Miami Puts AI Beside the Payments Floor

Swift will gather the industry in Miami from September 28 to October 1, 2026. This year’s theme is Digital finance for AI-driven economies. Ripple Treasury’s event page puts more than 12,000 senior finance people in the hall and says Sibos is making its Miami debut.

The booth argument is not a demo of an agent that wires funds while you watch. It is a demo of an agent that names the clause and waits. For a CFO who has been told to “embrace AI” and also to sign the accounts, that is the product that can get through audit.

Ripple still wants those same teams to hold RLUSD and XRP next to dollars in one view. GSmart does not complete that shift. It gives the office that would have to approve it a way to show who clicked, when, and under which rule.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is GSmart in Ripple Treasury?

GSmart is the AI layer built into Ripple Treasury, with optional tools such as Forecast Chaser, which chases overdue forecast submissions and flags odd entries, and Yield, which proposes cash placements against yield curves and policy limits. Client data stays isolated by tenant and, Ripple says, is never used to train shared models.

Can GSmart Agents Send a Payment Without Approval?

No. For any agent that can move or commit cash, nothing executes until a person approves, and the audit log stores the proposal, the clause, the approver, and the timestamp. Teams set autonomy limits per agent and can withdraw them.

When Did Ripple Buy GTreasury?

Ripple announced the $1 billion deal on October 16, 2025, its third major purchase that year after prime broker Hidden Road and stablecoin platform Rail. GTreasury brought more than four decades of treasury software and is based in Chicago, with offices in Dublin, London, Sydney, Singapore, and Manila.

What Did Gartner Say About AI Agent Sprawl?

Beyond the 2028 forecast, Gartner set out six steps, including a central agent inventory and ongoing checks for agents that exceed their scope. Goss warned that blocking sanctioned AI tools is not a lasting fix, because staff then turn to unsanctioned shadow AI.

When Is Sibos 2026 in Miami?

Swift will hold Sibos from September 28 to October 1, 2026 at the Miami Beach Convention Center. Ripple Treasury lists booth G034 for the four-day show.
