Paul Bettany Calls ‘VisionQuest’ a ‘Huge’ Swing, Hints at Secret Wars
Paul Bettany is back as Vision, and he is not playing it cool. The British actor says Marvel’s new Disney+ series VisionQuest is a “huge” creative swing that feels like the closing chapter of a trilogy. He also sounds pretty sure he will suit up again for Avengers: Secret Wars. The catch? Even he does not know the full plan.
Bettany Breaks Down the ‘Huge’ Creative Swing
Speaking on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast this week, Bettany did not hold back when asked how bold VisionQuest goes compared to WandaVision. He called the swing “huge” and said the series feels like “an end to a trilogy of sorts” while still standing on its own two feet.
The actor said the show keeps getting stronger in the editing bay. He praised showrunner Terry Matalas, the Star Trek: Picard veteran who took over after original head writer Jac Schaeffer left the project. “It’s funny, it’s moving, and it’s super exciting, and he did a grand job,” Bettany said of Matalas.
That trilogy talk lines up with Marvel’s own framing. VisionQuest is being billed as the third and final chapter of the story that began with 2021’s WandaVision and continued through 2024’s Agatha All Along.

The Disney+ Release Date and What We Know
The series will run for eight episodes. It was shot at the U.K.’s Pinewood Studios in 2025, with filming wrapping in late July of that year. Matalas serves as showrunner and director.
Here is how the show fits inside Marvel’s calendar:
| Project | Format | Release |
|---|---|---|
| VisionQuest | Disney+ Series | October 14, 2026 |
| Avengers: Doomsday | Film | December 18, 2026 |
| Avengers: Secret Wars | Film | December 17, 2027 |
James Spader Returns as Ultron in a Big Way
One of the biggest selling points is the return of James Spader as Ultron, more than a decade after Avengers: Age of Ultron. Bettany could barely contain himself when talking about working with him again.
“He is delicious. He’s so funny in this,” Bettany said. The actor added that the central relationship between Vision and Ultron forms the spine of the show. According to footage shown at the Upfronts, Spader appears as a bearded “human” version of Ultron, likely in scenes set inside Vision’s mind.
The supporting cast is stacked with classic Marvel AIs brought to life:
- James D’Arcy as J.A.R.V.I.S.
- Orla Brady as F.R.I.D.A.Y.
- Emily Hampshire as E.D.I.T.H.
- T’Nia Miller as Jocasta
- Henry Lewis as D.U.M.-E and Jonathan Sayer as U
- Todd Stashwick as the mercenary Paladin
- Faran Tahir reprising Raza from 2008’s Iron Man
- Ruaridh Mollica as Thomas Shepherd, also known as Tommy Maximoff or Speed
The Secret Wars Question Bettany Cannot Quite Answer
The timing here is everything. VisionQuest drops just two months before Avengers: Doomsday, then Secret Wars closes out the Multiverse Saga in December 2027.
When Horowitz asked directly if Secret Wars was coming for him, Bettany did not dodge. “I think so,” he said. He admitted Marvel keeps cast members in the dark, joking that playing the synthezoid “keeps the kids in private school.”
This is not the first time he has dropped hints. Back in December 2025, Bettany told The Telegraph, “I think I’ve got some Avengers duties next year.” Given that Doomsday finished principal photography in September 2025 and Secret Wars is set to film through summer 2026 under Anthony and Joe Russo, the math points straight at the 2027 finale.
Bettany shared a great story about Marvel’s secrecy machine. He recalled how the Infinity War cast did not learn their fates until a screening day on set. “When we all died, we found out that day on Infinity War. They took us into a trailer, and everybody was sitting watching the screen going, ‘Oh, I died.’ Nobody knew.”
Why VisionQuest Could Reshape Phase 6
Marvel Studios head of television Brad Winderbaum has called the show a meditation on fatherhood. He said it asks one heavy question. “Can a man who had an abusive father be a good father himself?”
That theme matters. Vision’s father is Ultron. His son, Tommy, is alive thanks to Agatha All Along. His wife, Wanda, vanished after Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. If Vision regains his memories and emotions, the road points straight toward a family reunion, and possibly the battlefield against Doctor Doom.
Bettany has also said the series tackles “intergenerational trauma” and “the denial of pain and denial of your own truth.” That is heavier ground than most superhero shows dare to walk.
Fans should also note that VisionQuest is the final live-action Marvel series before Avengers: Doomsday. Whatever happens in those eight episodes will likely echo through the rest of Phase 6.
For a character who has been killed, rebuilt, white-washed of memory, and shot into the sky, this fall could finally give Vision a real homecoming. Bettany sounds proud, and his enthusiasm is contagious. If VisionQuest sticks the landing, October 14 might end up being one of the most emotional Wednesdays on the MCU calendar in years.
