SNL Roasts Tucker Carlson Over Oscars, But Misses the Real Story

Published

on

Saturday Night Live took aim at Tucker Carlson this weekend. Cast member Jeremy Culhane delivered a biting impression of the conservative pundit, ranting about Oscar-nominated movies during Weekend Update. But here is the problem: the sketch painted a version of Carlson that no longer exists, ignoring the far more dramatic real-life storyline unfolding around him right now.

Jeremy Culhane Nails Carlson’s Laugh, Misses the Man

7 Saturday Night Live turned its sights on conservative commentator Tucker Carlson during a Weekend Update segment on March 14, with cast member Jeremy Culhane delivering a biting impersonation that exaggerated Carlson’s distinctive speaking style and laugh. 2 During the Weekend Update segment, SNL brought out Carlson as a “conservative commentator (and current thorn in MAGA’s side)” to weigh in on the Best Picture nominees. Culhane played Carlson as constantly confused, letting out high-pitched laughter in between rhetorical questions.

The bit focused on Carlson mocking this year’s Oscar lineup. 6He criticized several of this year’s Oscar-nominated films, including “Sinners,” “Hamnet,” and “Bugonia,” claiming they represent a “left-wing agenda” and the “collapse of American culture.”

Culhane captured Carlson’s physical quirks with near perfection. 7Weekend Update co-anchor Colin Jost eventually addressed the laugh directly, saying, “Man, I gotta tell you, that laugh is just awful.”

But surface-level impressions only go so far. The sketch treated Carlson like a standard conservative culture warrior complaining about Hollywood. That version of Carlson faded long ago.

The Real Tucker Carlson Story SNL Ignored

The real news about Tucker Carlson this week had nothing to do with movie reviews. It had everything to do with the CIA, Iran, and a stunning break with Donald Trump.

15

Tucker Carlson on Saturday night said the Justice Department is preparing to charge him for being an unregistered foreign agent, which Carlson said the CIA recommended after reading his text messages leading up to the war on Iran. He suggested “some” CIA workers could be targeting him because of his “views about Israel.” 19 Carlson said in his X video: “The CIA is preparing some kind of criminal referral against me, a crime report to the Department of Justice on the basis of a supposed crime I committed.” He said the crime was “talking to people in Iran before the war.” “They read my texts,” he said. 20 So far, neither the CIA nor the Department of Justice has publicly confirmed Carlson’s claims.

This is the Carlson story that matters right now. And SNL’s writers seemed completely unaware it was happening.

Trump Cuts Carlson Loose from MAGA Movement

The split between Trump and Carlson is perhaps the biggest shake-up in conservative media in years. It happened in early March, and it was public.

21 President Donald Trump cut Tucker Carlson out of the MAGA contingent following his criticism of the U.S.-Israeli military action against Iran. “Tucker has lost his way,” Trump told ABC News. “He’s not MAGA. MAGA is saving our country. MAGA is making our country great again. MAGA is America first, and Tucker is none of those things. And Tucker is really not smart enough to understand that.”

That is a former president publicly disowning one of his most powerful media allies. The response from Carlson was surprisingly warm. 25Carlson said, “There are times I get annoyed with Trump, right now definitely included, but I’ll always love him no matter what he says about me.”

The rift goes deep. Consider the timeline of Carlson’s recent trajectory:

  • October 2025: 17Carlson hosted white nationalist political commentator Nick Fuentes.
  • December 2025: 17The pro-Israel and Jewish advocacy group StopAntisemitism called Carlson “Antisemite of the Year.”
  • February 2026: 14Carlson said Israeli security officials detained him and members of his team shortly after he interviewed Washington’s ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee.
  • March 2026: 15Carlson called the U.S.-Israeli strikes that killed Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei “absolutely disgusting and evil,” and said Operation Epic Fury was being “waged” strictly on behalf of Israel.
  • March 14, 2026: Carlson claims the CIA is building a criminal case against him.

That is a staggering fall from the man who once drew the largest cable news audience in America. And SNL chose to write a bit about him complaining about movies.

Why SNL’s Satire Fell Flat

Good satire hits because it is rooted in truth. The best SNL political impressions over the decades worked because writers understood their targets deeply. Tina Fey’s Sarah Palin. Darrell Hammond’s Bill Clinton. Those impressions captured the real person.

9 Rookie Saturday Night Live cast member Jeremy Culhane stunned audiences with his surprise impression of right-wing commentator Tucker Carlson. His vocal work and mannerisms were sharp. The material, though, felt like it was written two years ago.

The sketch painted Carlson as a generic Fox News pundit ranting about woke culture. But Carlson has not been on Fox News since April 2023. 17Carlson publicly criticized Trump’s policy of military intervention against Iran, which triggered backlash from Trump.

The disconnect reveals something deeper about SNL’s comedy: the writers seem to build sketches based on what they assume conservatives are, not who they actually are in this moment.

Sinners Breaks Oscar Records Amid the Noise

The Oscar movies at the center of the sketch are, by all accounts, having a remarkable year. 33Sinners, a bold and bloody vampire saga set in the American South, earned a record-breaking 16 Oscar nominations.

33 With its 16 nods, Sinners has toppled the previous record of 14 nominations, which was held by All About Eve, Titanic and La La Land. 34 Already upon its April release, Sinners became the highest-grossing original movie domestically in 15 years.

The 98th Academy Awards ceremony airs tonight from the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. 32Conan O’Brien returns as host for the second consecutive year.

“Why don’t we grab some popcorn and watch American culture collapse.” SNL’s Tucker Carlson (Jeremy Culhane), Weekend Update, March 14, 2026

The line got laughs in Studio 8H. But it barely scratches the surface of the real Tucker Carlson story happening right now, which is stranger, darker, and far more consequential than any sketch comedy writers could invent.

Whether you agree with Carlson’s recent positions or find them deeply troubling, the truth is that his public unraveling has become one of the most dramatic media stories of 2026. SNL had a chance to capture that. Instead, they wrote a movie review bit. Sometimes the real world writes better comedy than any writers’ room ever could.
