Don Lee Joins Hemsworth as Extraction 3 Starts Shooting

Chris Hemsworth is back in the Kevlar as Tyler Rake, with Extraction 3 now in production in New South Wales. Idris Elba and Golshifteh Farahani will return, and Sam Hargrave is directing the third film for Netflix and AGBO.

On August 18, 2026, Big Punch Entertainment said Ma Dong-seok, the Korean American star known as Don Lee, will appear as well. His role is undisclosed, but the lead of Netflix’s Korean spin-off is now inside Rake’s movie, which is the crossover the April launch notes did not include.

Production Starts on the NSW South Coast

Hemsworth made the start of shooting public on July 23, 2026, posting set photos with Elba and Hargrave and writing, “E3 Here we go!” Netflix posted the same day that Extraction 3 was in production. Cameras opened on the New South Wales South Coast, then moved through Sydney, a home shoot Hemsworth had been chasing since the sequel was pushed off Australian stages.

Producer Patrick Newall said the company had backing from federal and state officials, the Port Authority of NSW, and Screen NSW. The shoot is supported by the Australian Government’s Location Offset and the Made in NSW Fund, the state program set up in 2020 to pull high-end features and drama to New South Wales.

NSW Minister of the Arts John Graham welcomed the cast and said it was good to see Netflix still making work in the state. Screen NSW later listed the film among 2026 international productions in New South Wales, on a slate that also included Hemsworth’s crime thriller Kockroach. For the state, Extraction 3 is a jobs file as much as a sequel.

Don Lee Crosses From Tygo Into Rake’s Movie

Don Lee is already the face of TYGO, Netflix and AGBO’s Korean Extraction film with Lee Jin-uk and Lalisa Manobal, known as Lisa of BLACKPINK. Big Punch Entertainment, Lee’s company, said in August that he will appear in Extraction 3, which was then already shooting, alongside Hemsworth and Elba. Plot details and the part itself were not disclosed.

That is the quiet shift. Until August, the Hemsworth films and the Korean feature were sold as stories in the same world, not as a shared cast. Putting TYGO’s lead in Rake’s third outing is the first time the companies have said a star will walk from one Extraction title into another.

Lee is also shooting The Roundup 5, which began filming in May 2026 and is due out in 2027. His agency did not say how large the Extraction 3 part is, or whether it overlaps with Tygo, the former child soldier turned mercenary he plays in the Korean film. The calendar still tells you AGBO wants him in both rooms.

Netflix Is Building Extraction on Three Continents

Angela Russo-Otstot, chief creative officer at AGBO, the company led by Anthony Russo and Joe Russo, framed the threequel as more universe-building than a one-off return. “It’s incredibly exciting to continue our partnership with Netflix as we further expand the Extraction universe,” she said when the deals closed on April 8, 2026.

The expansion was already on the books. On February 20, 2025, Netflix greenlit an eight-episode series set in Libya, with Omar Sy as a mercenary sent to rescue hostages and Glen Mazzara as showrunner. TYGO followed as a South Korean feature directed by Lee Sang-yong, from a script by Cha Woo-jin, produced with Big Punch Pictures, Nova Film, and B&C Group. Extraction 3 is the Hemsworth tentpole in the middle of that map.

THE EXTRACTION SLATE

The series logline stays inside the same job description the films use. Sy’s mercenary is trapped between warring factions and killers while he tries to pull hostages out of Libya. TYGO sends Lee’s character through Korea’s criminal underworld after a job goes wrong. Extraction 3’s story is still classified, which leaves the new titles doing the talking about where this world goes next.

Two Films Already Sat at Global No. 1

Netflix has a reason to keep building. Both Extraction, released in 2020, and Extraction 2, released on June 16, 2023, landed on the Most Popular English Films list and both hit No. 1 on the Global Top 10. The first film also drew two Critics Choice nominations, for Best Action Movie and Best Actor in an Action Movie.

In the week of June 12, 2023, Extraction 2 opened with nearly 43 million views, from 88.38 million hours watched, and Netflix flagged a 21-minute action oner as the calling card. By late August 2023 the sequel had entered the Most Popular list at No. 10 with 129.3 million views in its first 66 days. The original sat at No. 9 with 135.7 million views in its first 91 days, the first time one film series had placed two titles on that list at once.

Those figures are first-window tallies, not lifetime totals. When Netflix announced the Omar Sy series on February 20, 2025, it said Extraction, Extraction 2, and The Gray Man, all AGBO films, had each reached No. 1 on the Global Top 10 and had taken in over 300 million global views combined. The threequel is being made against that record, not against a hunch.

Sydney Was the Sequel They Could Not Shoot

The Australian dates close a loop the second film left open. Extraction 2 was lined up for Sydney before Covid lockdowns forced the production to Prague and Vienna. The first film had already used India and Thailand. The third chapter is the one that actually parked in Hemsworth’s home state, with Screen NSW and the Location Offset on the call sheet.

Hargrave put the location in plain terms when shooting began. “We’re very much looking forward to filming the third chapter in our Extraction saga here in New South Wales,” he said. Newall thanked Arts Minister Tony Burke, Port Authority NSW, Screen NSW, and state ministers including Paul Scully and John Graham for clearing a large action shoot through ports and regional sites.

The franchise still comes from the graphic novel Ciudad, by Ande Parks, from a story by Parks, Joe Russo, and Anthony Russo, with illustrations by Fernando León González. AGBO produces through Anthony Russo, Joe Russo, Angela Russo-Otstot, Michael Disco, and Ari Costa. Hemsworth and Benjamin Grayson produce through Wild State, with Hargrave, Newall, Eric Gitter, and Peter Schwerin. Steven V. Scavelli and Shelby Malone are executive producers.

Sam Hargrave Calls This the Biggest Swing Yet

Hargrave directed the first two films after years as a stunt coordinator, and the sequels sold themselves on long takes and close-quarters fights more than on twists. David Weil, who wrote on Citadel and Tyrant, is on the Extraction 3 screenplay, a handoff from Joe Russo’s script on the second film. Plot pages have not been shown.

Elba is back as Alcott, the man who arrived late in Extraction 2. Farahani returns as Nik Khan. The second film left Rake alive and still employable, which is the whole joke of the character: he keeps taking jobs that should end him. That is why a third film can start cameras without a published synopsis. The audience already knows the work.

Names such as Joe Taslim and Pierce Brosnan have been attached in unofficial lists while the shoot has been running. Netflix has not confirmed those parts, and they stay off the locked card. The billed company remains Hemsworth, Elba, Farahani, Hargrave, Weil, and now Don Lee.

When Extraction 3 Could Reach Netflix

Netflix has not set a release date. Deals closed in April 2026, cameras were rolling by July 23, and a 2027 streaming date is the window most of the industry has used, matching the working 2027 Netflix arrival window laid out when the film was first locked.
