Nate Bargatze’s The Breadwinner Lost to YouTube Horror

Nate Bargatze’s The Breadwinner closed at $20.2 million, under budget, while YouTube horror films Backrooms and Obsession rewrote the summer box office.

Nate Bargatze’s The Breadwinner opened to $7,353,073 in May 2026 and closed at $20,247,080, short of its $25 million budget. Sony’s PG dad comedy, the clean comic’s first feature, never posted a foreign gross.

The same Friday, a $10 million YouTube horror film took the weekend, and a $750,000 festival pickup was still climbing in week three. Arena fame did not travel. Internet horror did.

The Breadwinner Finished Under Its $25 Million Budget

TriStar and Sony Pictures Releasing put Bargatze, playing car salesman Nate Wilcox, in 3,252 theaters on May 29, 2026. Thursday previews sold $750,000. Friday brought $2,844,534. The three-day take of $7,353,073 ranked fifth, a $2,261 theater average, and accounted for 36.3 percent of the whole run.

Eric Appel directed from a script Bargatze wrote with Dan Lagana. Mandy Moore plays Katie Wilcox, who lands a Shark Tank deal and leaves Nate with their three daughters. Kevin O’Leary, Lori Greiner, Daymond John, Robert Herjavec, and Daniel Lubetzky appear as themselves. On paper it was summer counterprogramming: air conditioning, a PG rating for some mild suggestive references, and the country’s top-selling stand-up in dad clothes.

Critics did not come along. Rotten Tomatoes logged 20 percent positive from 41 reviews, with an average of 4.1 out of 10. The consensus called the jokes half-baked and Bargatze’s patriarch “one stale oaf.” Metacritic scored it 33 out of 100 from 13 critics. Audiences who bought a ticket graded it A- at CinemaScore. That split fed a hope of word of mouth. The holds never arrived.

THE FIVE WEEKENDS INSIDE SONY’S RUN

  1. May 29, 2026: Opens at No. 5 with $7,353,073 from 3,252 theaters.
  2. June 5, 2026: Falls 54 percent to $3,417,272 and slips to No. 8, still in 3,252 theaters.
  3. June 12, 2026: Drops 56 percent to $1,520,032 as the footprint shrinks to 2,006 theaters.
  4. June 19, 2026: Takes $868,882 from 802 theaters and ranks 14th.
  5. June 26, 2026: Adds $476,216 from 303 theaters; the run ends July 2 at a domestic total of $20,247,080.

Legs of 2.75 would look ordinary in a quieter month. Against a $25 million shoot cost, the theatrical line finished $4.8 million short, a 0.8 times return before marketing. Digital copies went on sale July 14, the same day A24 sent Backrooms home.

Two YouTube Films Owned the Same Weekend

Backrooms, directed by 20-year-old Kane Parsons for A24, Chernin Entertainment, Atomic Monster, and 21 Laps, opened to $81,402,424 from 3,442 theaters. That is more than 11 times The Breadwinner’s weekend from a $10 million budget, with a $23,650 theater average and $10.4 million in Thursday previews. It was A24’s largest debut, well past Civil War’s $25.5 million, and it made Parsons the youngest director to open at No. 1, under the 27-year-old mark Josh Trank set with Chronicle in 2012.

PostTrak found 86 percent of that opening crowd was under 35, and 44 percent was under 21. Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve star. The film is rated R. Young ticket buyers showed up for a fluorescent maze on a Friday night when a PG family comedy was playing down the hall.

Obsession, already in its third weekend for Focus Features, grew again. Curry Barker’s horror romance had opened May 15 to $17.2 million, then jumped 39 percent and 14 percent in the next two frames, the first wide release to rise three weekends in a row since E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial in 1982. Over May 29 to 31 it took $27.4 million and sat second, ahead of Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu, which had opened the week before to $81.6 million and then fell hard.

THREE FILMS, THREE COST STRUCTURES

Film Budget Opening weekend Domestic Worldwide
The Breadwinner $25 million $7,353,073 $20,247,080 $20,247,080
Backrooms $10 million $81,402,424 $197,523,512 $393,167,286
Obsession $750,000 $17.2 million $263.5 million $512.6 million

Backrooms later reached $393,167,286 worldwide, about 39 times what it cost to make, with $195,643,774 of that from overseas. Obsession, as of September 7, 2026, stood at $263.5 million domestic and $249.1 million abroad. Paul Dergarabedian, who tracks the market for Comscore, said after that opening weekend that people were asking what could bring audiences back to theaters, and that this might be it. He was not talking about the dad comedy.

Why Nate Bargatze’s Crowd Stayed Home

Bargatze does not have a small live business. Pollstar’s 2024 comedy chart put him at nearly $80 million in gross and more than 1 million tickets across 163 shows, more than $35 million ahead of Dave Chappelle. Those people fill arenas. Over Memorial Day’s neighboring weekends they did not fill 3,252 movie houses at a $2,261 average.

THE LIVE BUSINESS VERSUS THE MOVIE

  • 2024 tour: Nearly $80 million and more than 1 million tickets over 163 shows, per Pollstar.
  • Gap to second place: More than $35 million ahead of Dave Chappelle on that chart.
  • Film opening: $7,353,073 from 3,252 theaters.
  • Film finish: $20,247,080, all of it domestic.

Fellow stand-ups had already drawn the outline. Sebastian Maniscalco’s About My Father, which he co-wrote and which paired him with Robert De Niro, opened to $4,321,148 in May 2023 and stalled at $12,089,391 domestic and $18,167,819 worldwide against a $30 million budget. Bert Kreischer’s The Machine, from his viral bit, opened to $4,946,256 from 2,651 theaters the same holiday frame and grossed $19,838,506 domestically on a $20 million budget, $22,418,506 worldwide. Bargatze’s opening actually sat at the high end of that group. It still looked tiny beside a YouTube maze.

The conversion problem is blunt. A fan will pay arena prices to hear the cadence they already love. A $15 movie ticket asks that same fan to sit through a plot about a horse that was only sleeping, a collapsed roof, and a faked living-room livestream so Katie’s Shark Tank backers never see the wreckage. Appel’s film plays that chaos for mild laughs. The people who buy Bargatze tickets already know the persona. They did not need a 99-minute delivery device, and the rest of the country had Backrooms.

That is the same pattern already visible in other stand-up vehicles that stall in theaters. The A- CinemaScore says the families who went were fine. There were not enough of them, and they did not bring friends in week two.

Kane Parsons Posted the First Tape at 16

Parsons uploaded The Backrooms (Found Footage) to his Kane Pixels channel on January 7, 2022, a nine-minute short about a man trapped in humming yellow halls. The creepypasta already lived on 4chan and Reddit. His version, built in Blender because he thought the other clips looked cheap, passed roughly 78 million views. He followed it with 22 connected videos about the Async Research Institute mapping the rooms. His parents sat in on the first studio Zooms. He pitched A24 the week his college applications were due. The feature was announced in February 2023 with James Wan and Shawn Levy among the producers. Will Soodik wrote the screenplay with him.

The movie follows furniture-store owner Clark (Ejiofor) through a door in a showroom basement, with his therapist (Reinsve) trying to find him. Parsons used a reported 30,000 square feet of real sets. He has said he still thinks of the feature as a long episode of the series, not a goodbye to YouTube.

I don’t want to leave YouTube behind. I immensely enjoy the work I’ve done there, and I feel creatively fulfilled by it in a way that’s proportional to what I’ve done with this film.

Kane Parsons, director of Backrooms

He also said sequels were the plan since 2022, and that one movie could not reach what he calls the heart of the idea. A24’s second-weekend drop of 68 percent, to $26,256,335, showed a front-loaded crowd. The film still became the studio’s highest grosser, passing Marty Supreme, and kept adding in Japan into September. On September 6, 2026, Parsons signed to direct Backrooms 2.

$750,000 Turned Into $512.6 Million

Barker, a YouTube sketch comic, shot Obsession in Los Angeles in October 2024 in 20 days for $750,000. Michael Johnston plays Bear, a music-store clerk who uses a novelty called One Wish Willow to wish that Nikki, played by Inde Navarrette, would love him more than anyone. The wish comes true in a way the film does not soften. Barker has said studios offered about $2 million if he rewrote Bear into a hero, and that he kept the $750,000 version instead.

The film premiered September 5, 2025, in Midnight Madness at Toronto. Focus Features closed a worldwide deal near $15 million within roughly 24 hours, beating A24 and Neon. Christian Mercuri of Capstone, which financed it, later said the lesson was to bet on original ideas rather than the usual packages. TIFF programmer Peter Kuplowsky has said sketch-comedy writers make strong horror filmmakers, and that buyers in the room were the film’s audience.

As of September 7, 2026, Obsession had grossed $512.6 million worldwide. That is more than 680 times the production budget, before counting Focus’s acquisition check.

WHAT THE HOLD WEEKENDS BROKE

  • Three rising weekends: The first wide release since E.T. in 1982 to increase in its second and third frames.
  • Focus record: Passed Downton Abbey’s $194.6 million to become the distributor’s highest-grossing film.
  • Festival sale record: Passed The Blair Witch Project’s $248.6 million as the top-grossing festival acquisition.
  • Fourth-weekend horror mark: Its fourth domestic weekend topped Blair Witch’s old horror high of $24.3 million.

Barker told interviewers he did not expect a hit anywhere, and that the crew made the movie for nothing. An art-department fight over $300-a-day wages later sat beside those grosses. The theatrical fact is simpler. A 25-year-old YouTuber’s first real feature, bought at a festival, outran franchise product for months. Bargatze’s film was out of 3,252 theaters before Obsession had even peaked.

The Studio That Bought a Pitch, Not a Script

In November 2024, TriStar made a preemptive deal for The Breadwinner while the screenplay was still being written, a rare grab on an unproduced comedy. Wonder Project, a faith-based production company, came on as a partner. NateLand and One Man Canoe produced with Jeremy Latcham. Appel, who made Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, signed in February 2025. Moore, Will Forte, Colin Jost, Kumail Nanjiani, Zach Cherry, Kate Berlant, and Martin Herlihy joined that May. Cameras rolled in Atlanta on May 22, 2025.

Sony first dated the film March 13, 2026, then moved it to May 29 to sit at the start of summer family moviegoing. The slot put a $25 million original next to a YouTube creature that already had tens of millions of views and a festival horror title that had been compounding for two weeks. Sony Pictures Entertainment later booked $30 million in theatrical revenue from The Breadwinner as its only North American release that quarter, against $132 million from four films a year earlier.

The bet was that Bargatze’s ticket-buying habit would transfer. It transferred at the level Maniscalco and Kreischer had already set, and not at the level Parsons and Barker set with lore that teenagers already knew by heart. Hollywood spent the next months chasing the next Kane Pixels, not the next clean comic with a family pitch. In September 2026, Toronto opened a formal film market and used Obsession, a year after that $15 million sale, as the founding legend in the room.

The Breadwinner is gone from theaters. The yellow hallway is getting a sequel. That is the summer the listings actually recorded.

Frequently Asked Questions

When Was The Breadwinner Originally Scheduled to Open?

Sony first set a March 13, 2026, release, then shifted the film to May 29, 2026, to catch the start of summer family moviegoing. The March date would have missed Backrooms, which was always locked to late May, but it also would have sat far from the school-break window the studio wanted.

Where Was The Breadwinner Filmed?

Principal photography began May 22, 2025, in Atlanta, Georgia. Leo Birenberg and Zach Robinson, who scored Appel’s Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, wrote the music. Eigil Bryld shot it and Evan Henke edited.

Did The Breadwinner Play in Other Countries?

Release dates were logged for the Philippines on May 27, 2026, plus Belgium, Australia, New Zealand, and India, but the tracked box office is 100 percent domestic. The Numbers lists no foreign gross, so the worldwide line matches the $20,247,080 U.S. and Canada total.

How Long Is The Breadwinner and What Is the Star Minder?

The film runs 99 minutes. The Star Minder is Katie Wilcox’s invention for her daughters, the product that wins the Shark Tank deal and sends her to South Korea, then San Francisco, which is the plot engine that leaves Bargatze’s Nate at home.
