Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 Finally Catches Its Rivals

Samsung’s redesigned Galaxy Z Fold 8 series brings a crease fix and a wide shape that Huawei and Oppo already shipped, plus a free giveaway to enter now.

Samsung split its Galaxy Z Fold line into two separate phones on July 22, unveiling the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra at a Galaxy Unpacked event in London. Prices jumped $100 at every storage tier, and Android Headlines is giving a unit away free before either phone reaches stores on August 7.

The redesign fixes a stubborn crease and reshapes the phone into a wider body. Huawei, Oppo and Honor had already shipped versions of both fixes months earlier.

Samsung Splits the Fold Line Into Two Phones

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is an entirely new shape for Samsung, its first wide format foldable. The phone weighs 201 grams and measures 4.8mm unfolded, carrying an IP48 rating for dust and water resistance. Its inner display spans 7.6 inches in a 4:3 aspect ratio at 120Hz and 3,000 nits, with a widened 5.5 inch cover screen running at the same refresh rate.

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra plays a different role. It is the true successor to last year’s Galaxy Z Fold 7, keeping that phone’s tall, narrow shape while adding a slimmer build and what Samsung calls a nearly crease free inner display, thanks to a titanium damping layer under the glass. It is also Samsung’s first foldable to carry the Ultra name, a branding move that mirrors what the Galaxy S line did back in 2020.

US launch price (base storage) Positioned below the Ultra $2,099

Renders and leaked dimensions had circulated for months before launch, including detailed Fold 8 Ultra specs and render leaks before Unpacked that lined up closely with Friday’s official reveal. The Ultra’s storage options run $2,099 for 256GB, $2,299 for 512GB and $2,699 for the 1TB model in the US, each $100 above the equivalent Galaxy Z Fold 7 configuration a year ago. European buyers pay from €2,199 up to €2,799 for the same spread. All major US carriers are carrying the phone, including T-Mobile’s own Z Fold8 Ultra listing, which confirms the shared 5,000mAh battery size with the Galaxy S26 Ultra.

The Crease Rivals Erased First

Samsung is marketing the titanium layer inside the Fold 8 Ultra as a meaningful crease fix. It is not the first one on the market.

Oppo’s Find N6, which launched in China months before Samsung’s event, claims a fold line just 0.05mm deep, versus roughly 0.2mm of variation Oppo says it measured on Samsung and Honor foldables. After 200,000 fold cycles, Oppo says its own crease measured 11 micrometers, compared with 72 micrometers on the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and 127 micrometers on the Honor Magic V5, according to its testing cited by Trusted Reviews.

Thickness tells a similar story. A pre launch tally from PhoneArena put the Honor Magic V6 at 4.1mm unfolded, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 at 4.2mm, and the Oppo Find N6 also at 4.2mm, with Huawei’s Mate X7 at 4.5mm and the larger Pura X Max at 5.2mm. Samsung’s redesign lands inside that same tight band rather than ahead of it.

Huawei Already Sold the Wide Shape

The wider body itself is not new to the category either. Huawei’s Pura X Max launched in mid April as what the company called the first horizontally wide foldable, months before Samsung showed anything similar.

Side by side comparisons that circulated after Huawei’s launch showed the two phones converging on the same idea from different directions. The Pura X Max measures 166.5mm wide and 5.2mm thick unfolded, weighing 229 grams with an IP59 rating, while Samsung’s Fold 8 came in thinner and lighter at 4.8mm and 201 grams, though with a lower IP48 rating. Samsung ships both phones with One UI 9 built on Android 17, the same software track rolling out across its Galaxy S26 lineup, while Huawei’s Pura X Max runs HarmonyOS 6.1 without Google Play Services, which limits app availability outside China.

Huawei’s phone also wins on raw capacity. Reviewers comparing the two called the Pura X Max the pick for battery life and charging speed, even as Samsung’s version won out on portability and ergonomics.

Who Actually Leads the Foldable Market?

Huawei topped the foldable market with a 47.7% share in the second quarter of 2026, more than triple Samsung’s 15.2%, according to Smart Analytics Global’s Q2 2026 foldable shipment tracker. Counterpoint Research still expects Samsung to finish the year on top with roughly a third of global shipments, once the Fold 8 launch and holiday sales are counted.

Global foldable shipments fell 2% year over year to 3.4 million units in the second quarter, even as the broader smartphone market dropped 8%. Samsung’s own shipments still grew 24.9% year over year in that window, on the strength of the outgoing Fold 7 and Flip 7, with Lenovo (Motorola) holding 12.9% and Honor at 12.2%. Oppo held 6.2%.

Vendor Q2 2026 actual share (Smart Analytics Global) Full year 2026 forecast (Counterpoint Research)
Huawei 47.7% 24%
Samsung 15.2% 32%
Lenovo (Motorola) 12.9% 8%
Honor 12.2% 3%
Apple Not yet shipping 25%

The two firms are measuring different things, a quarterly snapshot against a full year forecast, so the columns should not be read as contradicting each other so much as capturing the market before and after Samsung’s launch cycle and Apple’s rumored entry. A year earlier, in the first quarter of 2026, Huawei’s lead was even wider. TechInsights tracked Huawei at 54.4% share in Q1 2026, with Samsung at 22.8%, as Asia Pacific demand carried more than 81% of global volume.

2026 will mark a new phase for the foldable smartphone market.

Liz Lee, Associate Director at Counterpoint Research, said Samsung retains an edge in product maturity and channel reach even as rivals close the technical gap, and argued the wider Fold 8 design could suit buyers who want to keep several apps visible at once. Apple is the wild card behind both forecasts. Its rumored first foldable iPhone, sometimes called the iPhone Ultra, is expected around September, roughly six weeks after Samsung’s Unpacked event, and could ship as many as 10 million units in its debut year.
