WhatsApp’s New PDF Tool Runs on Adobe’s Acrobat Software
WhatsApp shipped four updates this week, but its new PDF editor runs entirely on Adobe Acrobat, part of a wider Adobe distribution push.
WhatsApp switched on four new features this week, and the one drawing the loudest reaction was not built by WhatsApp at all. Users can now hear and reply to voice messages through CarPlay and Android Auto, share Apple Music and Spotify tracks to their Status, sign up for an account on an iPad without a phone number, and open a PDF inside a chat without downloading it first. That last feature runs on Adobe Acrobat, and Adobe wants people to know it.
Meta’s own rollout notes treat the PDF tool as one line among four. Adobe published a separate announcement the same week, crediting its own engineers and folding the deal into a much longer campaign to place its software inside apps people already have open.
Four Updates Land in One Release
WhatsApp confirmed that all four features are live now, though the company said rollout happens in stages, so some accounts will see the changes later than others. Android Auto has supported WhatsApp calls since 2023, but the app never let drivers hear or answer incoming messages without picking up the phone. That gap closes now.
- CarPlay and Android Auto: hands-free playback and voice replies for incoming messages, a call history list, and one-tap access to favorite contacts, all inside the car’s own screen.
- PDF viewing and editing: opens, previews, and annotates PDFs inside WhatsApp Web and the Windows app, built on Adobe Acrobat.
- Status music sharing: Apple Music and Spotify tracks post directly to a user’s Status for contacts to open in the same service.
- iPad account creation: new users can sign up on the iPad app without first activating a phone number.
TechCrunch described the update as part of Meta’s push to turn WhatsApp into a fuller cross-device platform built for more than mobile messaging alone.

Acrobat Powers WhatsApp’s New PDF Tool
Adobe’s engineers, not WhatsApp’s, built the software behind the PDF feature. The integration lets people preview, open, review, and mark up documents without leaving the chat or downloading the file, and it keeps a document’s original layout and formatting intact. Password-protected PDFs work too, and files stay covered by WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption the whole time.
Acrobat is built to power document workflows wherever they happen.
Abhigyan Modi, Adobe’s senior vice president for its Creativity and Productivity Business, said that in Adobe’s own post announcing the rollout. He added that the move extends Acrobat’s reach into one of the most heavily used communication platforms in the world. Adobe pointed to WhatsApp’s roughly three billion users and the growing habit of reviewing contracts, invoices, and forms on larger screens as the reason the deal made sense now.
The feature only works on WhatsApp Web and the Windows desktop app. Phones keep sending and receiving PDFs the old way, with no timeline given for a mobile version.
From ChatGPT to Copilot to WhatsApp
WhatsApp is not Adobe’s first stop this year. The company has spent the past several months tucking Acrobat and its sibling apps into whatever software people already have open.
| Platform | Date | What Changed |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | December 2025 | Photoshop, Acrobat, and Adobe Express let users edit images, modify PDFs, and generate designs through chat commands |
| Microsoft 365 Copilot | March 2026 | Express and Acrobat joined the Copilot Agent Store for use inside Copilot Chat and Teams |
| WhatsApp Web and Windows | July 2026 | Acrobat opens, previews, and annotates PDFs directly inside a chat |
Adobe’s own securities filings spell out the logic in plain language. In its most recent annual report, the company said it will keep pursuing partnerships that expand its distribution reach and support its enterprise business. Getting Acrobat in front of people who never intended to buy a PDF app is the whole point.
The Subscription Waiting Behind the Free Tool
Adobe’s Digital Media segment, which bundles Acrobat with Creative Cloud, brought in $17.65 billion in fiscal 2025, up 11% year over year and equal to roughly 74% of the company’s total revenue. Adobe has guided fiscal 2026 revenue toward $25.9 billion to $26.1 billion.
The free tools inside WhatsApp cover viewing, annotating, highlighting, and opening password-protected files. Acrobat’s deeper editing tools and its AI Assistant, which summarizes documents and answers questions about their contents, sit behind a separate paid Acrobat subscription.
Creative Cloud and Document Cloud revenue have climbed together for years, and Acrobat remains the product most people meet without ever visiting Adobe’s own website. WhatsApp is simply the newest doorway.
WhatsApp Cuts Its Own Ties to the Phone Number
The iPad change fits a pattern Meta has been building for months. A few weeks before this update, WhatsApp added usernames that let people share a profile without handing out their phone number. In late May, Meta launched a WhatsApp Plus subscription with extras like profile customization, super reactions, and story insights, mirroring similar Plus tiers it introduced for Instagram and Facebook.
Meta has leaned on outsiders to build parts of its ecosystem before. It recently opened its Ray-Ban Display glasses to outside app makers rather than building every feature for the hardware in-house. The WhatsApp and Adobe deal points the opposite direction: instead of inviting developers in, WhatsApp borrowed a finished product and shipped it as its own update.
For now, the phone-number-free option applies only to the iPad app, aimed at people whose primary device is a tablet rather than a phone.
What Happens to an iPad Account With No Phone Number?
WhatsApp has not published details on account recovery or multi-device linking for accounts created this way, has not set a completion date for the wider rollout, and has not confirmed a minimum CarPlay or Android Auto version for message playback. Several practical questions stay open even though the features themselves are already live.
- Confirmed: All four features are live now, though a staged rollout means some accounts see the changes later than others.
- Confirmed: The PDF tools work only on WhatsApp Web and the Windows app, not on phones.
- Unconfirmed: Whether in-car message playback needs a minimum CarPlay or Android Auto software version.
- Unconfirmed: How account recovery or multi-device linking works for iPad accounts created without a phone number.
- Unconfirmed: A completion date for the global rollout.
Meta’s identity systems have had rough patches recently. Earlier this year, a support chatbot handed Instagram accounts to hackers after failing basic verification checks. WhatsApp has not explained what proves ownership of an iPad account once the device itself is lost or stolen.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Adobe’s Acrobat integration in WhatsApp free to use?
Viewing, annotating, highlighting, and opening password-protected PDFs cost nothing extra inside WhatsApp Web or the Windows app. Acrobat’s deeper editing tools and its AI Assistant, which can summarize a document or answer questions about it, require a separate paid Acrobat subscription.
Can I still send and open PDFs in the WhatsApp mobile app?
Yes. Phones can still send, receive, and download PDF files as before. The new in-line Acrobat viewer and annotation tools work only on WhatsApp Web and the Windows desktop app, with no mobile version announced yet.
How do I share an Apple Music or Spotify song to my WhatsApp Status?
Open the track inside the Apple Music or Spotify app, tap its share button, and choose WhatsApp Status as the destination. Contacts who view the Status can tap the song to open it in whichever service posted it.
Did WhatsApp time this update to Samsung’s Unpacked event?
No connection has been confirmed. The features happened to roll out the same day as Samsung’s July Unpacked event, but WhatsApp’s own announcement makes no mention of Samsung or any device launch.
