Land Rover Defender Octa: 626HP Beast Meets $4 Gas
Imagine spending $160,000 on a SUV. Then watching gas prices rip past $4 a gallon the very same week it sits on your driveway. That is the awkward, almost poetic reality surrounding the 2026 Land Rover Defender Octa right now. It is glorious, brutal, and completely unapologetic. But is this the right machine for this very wrong moment?
The Most Powerful Defender Ever Built
9 Launched in 2025, the Defender Octa eclipses the already-potent Defender V8 with a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged engine producing 626 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque. 3 The Octa is clearly inspired by rally-raid culture, and the BMW-sourced 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 is entirely new to the Defender line-up. 6 The extra horsepower helps the Octa rocket from 0 to 60 mph in about 3.8 seconds, reaching a top speed of approximately 155 mph. 8 Land Rover challenged its engineers to subject the Defender Octa to the most extreme testing and development program in Defender history, with more than 13,960 tests completed. The result is something that feels less like a production SUV and more like a road-legal weapon.
Here is a quick look at what makes the Octa stand apart from every other Defender:
| Feature | Defender Octa | Defender V8 |
|---|---|---|
| Engine | 4.4L Twin-Turbo V8 | 5.0L Supercharged V8 |
| Horsepower | 626 hp | 518 hp |
| 0-60 mph | 3.8 seconds | 5.1 seconds |
| Fuel Economy (Combined) | 17 mpg | 16 mpg |
| Starting Price (US) | ~$160,000 | Lower |
6 Compared to the rest of the Defender lineup, the Octa offers an extra 1.1 inches of ground clearance and a track that is wider by 2.7 inches. 8 It also goes deeper than any Defender has ever gone, with a wading depth of up to 3.3 feet, double the capability of the original Defender.

What $160,000 Actually Gets You

The Octa is not just the most powerful Defender ever made. It is arguably the most complete one.
The Gas Price Problem Nobody Wanted
This is where the timing gets cruel.
17 U.S. gasoline prices hit $4.06 a gallon as the Iran war continues to drive up costs for American drivers. 17 The average cost of a gallon of gas has jumped 36% since the war started, according to AAA. 11 With gas prices in the U.S. hitting several-year highs as a result of military operations in the Middle East and subsequent pressure on the Strait of Hormuz, many households are feeling the squeeze of the cost of their commute. 17 The Strait of Hormuz, through which one-fifth of the global oil supply flows, remains effectively closed. 19 “More than likely there is more to come, because there is usually a lag between crude prices and what consumers pay at the pump,” said Phil Flynn, senior market analyst at Price Futures Group. 11 Regular gas has reached $5.89 per gallon in California. 13 Gas prices are the top concern for American adults, with 86% saying they are concerned about the price of gas going forward, according to Finder’s Consumer Confidence Index, slightly ahead of household bills and groceries at 85%. In fact, 25% of respondents are extremely concerned about the cost of gas, representing the highest percentage of extreme worry among those surveyed.
Now put that against a 626-horsepower SUV that returns single-digit fuel economy the moment you push it hard. The math is painful.
9 The Octa’s twin-turbo V8 is rated for 15 mpg in the city, 19 mpg on the highway, and 17 mpg combined. Driven with a little care, you can see 15 mpg on the trip computer. Expect single digits if you engage the Octa button on the steering wheel and hurl this big SUV as the automaker intended.
Does the Fun Justify the Cost?
Here is the honest answer: yes, in the moment, it absolutely does.
9 Ridiculous duality has been the name of the game for performance SUVs for some time. The biggest surprise with the Octa is that Land Rover waited quite so long before following Mercedes-AMG, BMW M, and others into this segment. 4 The ability to excel at both on- and off-road performance is typically a tough act to pull off. Mercedes nails it with its G-Class, especially now that you can opt for the AMG Performance package featuring a hydraulically actuated suspension system. The Octa’s approach is different though. It does not just go fast on roads. 9 If this particular Defender stands out from the six-figure crowd, it is because it carries the regular truck’s well-respected off-road abilities in its back pocket. 3 Autocar crowned it the Best 4×4 in their annual Autocar Awards. That is not a small thing. Off-road capability in a machine this fast and this heavy is a genuine engineering achievement.
“The Defender Octa is glorious, as a brash and unnecessary expression of giddying ridiculousness.”
Still, the irony hangs heavy. 9During the same week the Octa sat on the driveway, equal driving fun was found in a three-decade-old Japanese kei car with an engine less than a sixth the size of that under the Land Rover’s hood, with seating for just two people.
Thinking Before You Fill Up
18 Even if the Iran war ends soon, gasoline prices in the U.S. would likely remain elevated much longer than expected. With few ships daring to navigate the Strait of Hormuz, a backlog of oil tankers has amassed on both ends of the waterway, a quagmire that could take up to two weeks to resolve. 18 Projections do not foresee gasoline prices falling below $3 per gallon at any point between now and the end of 2027. That is a fact worth sitting with when you are staring at a $160,000 car that drinks premium fuel for breakfast. 9 While everyone has a responsibility to consider their carbon footprint, any frustration at the gas pump about the Defender Octa’s thirst lands primarily as a financial headache. That is the real pinch for buyers in today’s climate.
The Defender Octa is not a villain. It is a masterpiece of engineering built for a world where gas was cheaper and consequences felt further away. Land Rover has done something genuinely extraordinary here, packing supercar speed, luxury, and true off-road DNA into one widened, growling package. But buying one in April 2026 means accepting both the thrill and the bill with eyes wide open. America’s love affair with the V8 has never been more complicated, or more expensive. And somehow, it has never sounded better than it does coming out of those Octa exhausts. What do you think? Would you still pull the trigger on a $160,000 gas-guzzler in today’s fuel climate?
