Sony Cuts the XM5 to Half Price, Again
Sony’s WH-1000XM5 is $198 for Labor Day, the same half-price clearance the XM4 took, while the XM6 still lists near $398.
Sony’s WH-1000XM5 headphones are $198 on Amazon, half the $399.99 list, matching the lowest Amazon price on record. Best Buy has the same ticket for the Labor Day window, and all four colors have been listed at that figure.
The print first showed up in late June during Prime Day, then the cups spent the summer nearer $248 before the extra $50 came off again on August 31. That is how Sony clears a WH-1000X flagship once the next one is on shelves, and it is the same path the XM4 took after these launched.
Sony Puts the XM5 Back at $198
The WH-1000XM5 shipped in May 2022 as a $399.99 over-ear with Sony’s dual-processor noise canceling, LDAC, and a 250 g frame. Four years later the hardware is unchanged, and the only new fact is the sticker. Amazon’s own chart, plus Labor Day listings at Best Buy, Target, and Walmart, all land on $198, which is $201.99 off list and the figure deal roundups have been calling 50% off.
THE LABOR DAY TICKET
- New price: $198 at Amazon as of August 31, 2026, with Best Buy matching it without a Prime login.
- List and average: $399.99 original list, with a long-run Amazon average of $297.95.
- Last stop: $248 through much of the summer after the June Prime Day print of $198.
- The next model: the WH-1000XM6 is $398 on Sony’s store, a $200 step up for the current flagship.
Amazon price history for the XM5 logs that $198 low on the silver SKU and still shows third-party used copies around $180.18. Sony still rates the cups at 30 hours with noise canceling on and 40 hours with it off, plus a 3-minute plug-in that Sony says returns 3 hours of playback. Quick Attention is still there: cover the right cup with a hand and ambient sound comes up so you can talk without taking them off.
Independent tests have timed the XM5 closer to 31 hours and 53 minutes with ANC on, so the rated 30-hour claim is not theater. Bluetooth is 5.2 with SBC, AAC, and LDAC. There is no LE Audio, no Auracast, and no listening while the USB-C cable is feeding the battery. Those omissions are the point of the $200 gap, not a surprise this late.
The Same Clearance Hit the XM4
Sony does not hide old flagships. It keeps them in the catalog, then walks the street price down until the new model is the only one still asking for $400. The WH-1000XM4, which launched in 2020 at $349.99 and later showed up with a $348 tag, fell to $198 on Amazon after the XM5 took the top slot. By late November 2025, Best Buy had the XM4 at $159.
HOW SONY CLEARS AN OLD FLAGSHIP
- May 2022: The WH-1000XM5 launches at $399.99 and the XM4 stays on sale beside it.
- May 15, 2025: Sony Electronics Inc. launches the WH-1000XM6 at $449.99 in the US ($599.99 in Canada) with a folding hinge Sony had removed on the XM5.
- November 2025: The XM4 prints $159 at Best Buy while the XM5 sits near $248 for Black Friday.
- June 26, 2026: The XM5 hits $198 in the Prime Day window, its first sub-$200 Amazon price.
- August 31, 2026: Retailers reprint $198 for Labor Day, 15 months after the XM6 launch.
That 15-month gap is the useful number. May 15, 2025 to early September 2026 is a year and a quarter, close to the year it took the XM4 to see its first deep cut after the XM5 arrived. Anyone who paid $399.99, or even the $297.95 Amazon average, was buying on Sony’s launch clock. Anyone who waited bought the same ANC stack at half list.
Labor Day has the rest of the aisle moving too. Bose’s standard QuietComfort over-ears have been listed at $199, down from $359, which puts last-gen Sony and mid-tier Bose in the same $200 band. The Ultra line still asks for flagship money. The lesson is not that ANC suddenly got cheap. It is that last year’s flagship always does, on Sony’s calendar, once the new cups exist.
What $200 More Buys on the XM6
Sony’s US store has the XM6 on sale for $398, down from a $459.99 original price on that page. The launch announcement in May 2025 set suggested retail at $449.99. Either way you are looking at about $200 over the XM5, and Sony’s own copy says what that money is for: a QN3 processor it calls seven times faster than the QN1 in the XM5, plus twelve microphones and a faster chip, 1.5 times the XM5’s eight-mic array.
The WH-1000XM6 headphones are powered by a new HD Noise Canceling Processor QN3 that is seven times faster than the previous model and uses twelve microphones, 1.5 times more than the WH-1000XM5, to fine-tune sounds in real time.

Folding is the change you can see without a spec sheet. The XM5’s cups only lay flat, so the case is a rigid clamshell that eats bag space. Sony put a metal-injection hinge back on the XM6 so the cups fold in, the way the XM4 did, and said the compact case now uses a magnetic closure. Bluetooth moves to 5.3 with LE Audio, LC3, and Auracast. You can listen while charging over USB-C, which the XM5 cannot do. Weight ticks up from 250 g to 254 g.
XM5 VERSUS XM6 AT TODAY’S PRICES
| Spec | WH-1000XM5 | WH-1000XM6 |
|---|---|---|
| Street price now | $198 | $398 on Sony.com |
| Launch list | $399.99 (May 2022) | $449.99 (May 15, 2025) |
| ANC microphones | 8 | 12 |
| Processor | QN1 | QN3, rated 7x faster |
| Bluetooth | 5.2, SBC/AAC/LDAC | 5.3, plus LE Audio, LC3, Auracast |
| Folding cups | No, lay-flat only | Yes, metal hinge |
| Rated battery (ANC on) | 30 hours | 30 hours |
| USB-C listen while charging | No | Yes |
Rated battery is a tie at 30 hours with ANC on. Independent lab runs have the XM6 lasting 37 hours and 14 minutes with ANC on, against 31 hours and 53 minutes for the XM5, and they put noise reduction at 87 percent versus 84 percent when the seal is good. That is a real gap. It is also a 3-point ANC gap against a $200 price gap. Reviewers who sat with both pairs keep landing in the same place: the XM6 is the better headset, and the XM5 is the better ticket once it is $198.
Used XM5 Pairs Now Trade Below $198
Third-party used XM5 units on Amazon were at $180.18 on August 31, with a recorded used low of $158.16 on October 1, 2025. A new sealed pair at $198 collapses that spread. Anyone trying to sell last year’s flagship now has to undercut a retailer box with a warranty, and the $297.95 Amazon average tells you what typical buyers actually paid through the life of the listing.
Launch customers ate the steepest mark-down. People who bought the XM5 near $400, and people who later paid about $450 for early XM6 stock, have watched the outgoing cans print $299, then $248, then $198. That is the WH-1000X contract in practice: the first-year price is a tax on being early, and the third-year price is what the same drivers cost once Sony needs the shelf for the foldable successor.
The used floor also explains why $198 is not a one-day glitch. Prime Day already proved Amazon would print it. Labor Day printed it again, this time without a Prime gate at Best Buy. When a price repeats, it is a clearance band, not a coupon. The XM4 taught the same lesson when $198 became a regular ask and $159 showed up later. The XM5 is now in that band, 15 months after Sony put the XM6 on sale.
A Rigid Case and a Known Weak Hinge
The XM5’s non-folding cups were the complaint that followed the 2022 launch, and the $198 deal still drags that complaint with it. The first joke the listing attracts is about glue, because the lay-flat hinge and the thin arms became the model’s reputation. Sony’s own XM6 materials spend unusual space on a metal folding mechanism meant to slip into bags and airplane pockets, which is a quiet admission that taking the fold off the XM5 was a miss.
Independent testers have said the XM6 finally addresses the fragile hinge design that plagued the XM5, with visible metal reinforcement and cups that fold inward like the XM4. The XM5 can only lay flat, so the travel case stays a hard, oversized clamshell. At $198 that case is an annoyance. At $399.99 it was a reason to wait. If you live out of a backpack or a slim briefcase, the XM6’s hinge is the entire $200 argument. If the cups live on a desk or in a roomy tote, it is not.
Comfort splits the other way for some heads. The XM5’s pads are deeper than the XM6’s out of the box, and some testers found the newer earcups shallow, with an ANC mic that can rub a larger ear. Sony still sells the XM5 in black, platinum silver, midnight blue, and smoky pink, so color is not the constraint. The constraint is whether you will hate the case every time you pack.
Skip These If You Need Cups That Fold
At $198 the XM5 is the WH-1000X feature set with the 2022 body, still charged in 3.5 hours, still 8.82 oz, still good for calls through beamforming mics. It is the pair for commuters, office days, and long flights if the rigid case fits the bag you already carry. It is a poor match if you wanted the fold Sony restored, or if you need Auracast and LE Audio on a timeline that actually matters in 2026.
WHO THIS $198 PAIR FITS
- Wait-it-out buyers: You wanted Sony ANC and refused $400. This is the price that wait was for.
- XM4 owners on a dead battery: You already know the app and the touch cup, and $198 is cheaper than a lot of repair quotes.
- XM6 skippers: You heard the 3-point ANC gap and the extra 5 hours in lab tests and still will not pay $200 for a hinge and four mics.
- Folding holdouts: Skip it. The XM6 exists because these cups do not fold, and the case will remind you on every trip.
- Headset hunters: A commute ANC can is a different buy from the SteelSeries Arctis Nova Elite’s $600 ceiling, which is built around chat mixes and game audio rather than a 30-hour quiet commute.
Sony will print another WH-1000X in this decade, and the XM6 will take this same walk toward $200 once that pair exists. The XM5’s job, right now, is to sit at half list and make the $398 current flagship feel like a hinge tax. If you wanted the quiet and not the fold, Labor Day already named the price.
