Game of Thrones Dragonfire Follows Boston’s Conquest Playbook

Game of Thrones: Dragonfire went live on June 2, 2026 as a free mobile strategy game with 28 dragons. Warner Bros. Games Boston built it for the Dance of the Dragons and shipped it 19 days before House of the Dragon Season 3.

The studio already knows this business. It launched Game of Thrones: Conquest in October 2017, and that war game was still receiving Android builds on September 2, 2026.

The Studio That Turned Conquest Into a Long-Running Machine

Warner Bros. Games Boston started as Turbine, the shop behind Asheron’s Call, Dungeons & Dragons Online, and The Lord of the Rings Online. It rebranded in 2018 after Conquest proved that a Westeros map, an alliance chat, and a timer loop could hold a TV audience between episodes.

Matt Read, vice president and studio head at Warner Bros. Games Boston, said the aim was to put House of the Dragon in players’ hands and still leave room for them to play their own way. That is the Conquest brief with a different century and a larger bestiary.

Conquest never left the store. Dragonfire did not replace it. Boston now feeds two live Westeros maps from the same TV calendar.

28 Dragons and Five Armies on a Tile Map

Players start as a Valyrian descendant bonded to a first dragon and work from whelp to war. The launch roster holds iconic beasts such as Caraxes and Syrax plus originals made for the game, and each one carries Command skills, passive Habit abilities, troop affinities, and synergies.

You can field up to five dragon-led armies at once on a tiled map of Westeros, marching, holding, and reinforcing across tiles that pay out resources or faster help from allies. Warner Bros. Games described the fights as tactical, tile-based warfare, which is a slower read than the show’s sky duels.

A Dragon Strike minigame sits beside that map. You fly, dodge, and breathe fire, then drop back into the land war. Campaigns put you around Rhaenyra Targaryen’s claim or inside the Greens, with branching stages that shift when a new Reign begins.

Seasonal Reigns Reset the Map and Keep Your Dragons

Dragonfire runs on limited seasonal Reigns. Territory control and the race for land reset so new riders can enter a fair fight, while dragon growth stays with the account. That split is the live-ops trick: the ladder turns over, the collection does not.

Alliances still matter for coordinated attacks on named castles. Solo players can push Personal and Faction goals without joining a group, so the map is not locked to guild life. Story scenes unlock from those objectives, and the studio says collective choices change how the shared campaign reads.

WHAT A REIGN WIPES AND WHAT IT KEEPS

• Land race: Seasonal Reigns reset territory control and the scramble for tiles.
• Dragon book: Hatch, raise, and grow progress stays with the rider.
• Story stages: Campaign beats change with each Reign, including new outcomes and rewards.
• Group path: Alliance war remains optional because Faction goals still count for solo play.

The reset is also how Boston keeps a TV spike from turning into a closed club. Conquest taught the studio that a Westeros 4X lives or dies on whether late arrivals can still matter when the next episode drops.

What HBO Max Linking Unlocked in Dragonfire

Players who linked a Warner Bros. Games account to an active HBO Max account earned a bespoke in-game gift for each House of the Dragon Season 3 episode, plus a premium reward for finishing all eight. Vhagar, named for a god of Old Valyria, is less a dragon than a living monument to conquest. Bronze and immense beyond easy measure, she is history made flesh and given wings, a beast whose shadow has fallen across the founding of dynasties and the ruin of kingdoms alike.

The Same Complaint That Met the April Trailer

The April 7, 2026 announcement trailer drew an old Westeros argument before anyone had hatched a thing. Replies wanted a full game, a Crusader Kings-scale war, something other than another phone map with alliance timers. That complaint is older than Dragonfire.
