Project Helix Is a Device Family Microsoft Already Started

Asha Sharma called Project Helix a family of devices, a line that fits Xbox handhelds already on sale and AMD’s multi-device chip plan.

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said Project Helix is a family of devices, months after Microsoft and ASUS already put Xbox handhelds on sale. She spoke at Gamescom and still would not give a price, a date, or a disc-drive answer.

The living-room box is still in development. The family language now attached to Helix matches a stack Microsoft has been assembling in public since 2025.

Sharma Named a Helix Family at Gamescom

Asked whether Helix would ship without a disc drive, Sharma declined to talk hardware. She then gave the line that moved the story. Microsoft had been “hard at work on a great next generation and a great family of devices for Helix,” she said, “and we’ll share more soon.”

We’ve been hard at work on a great next generation and a great family of devices for Helix, and we’ll share more soon.

She repeated the software pitch in the same sitting. Helix machines are meant to play Xbox console games and Windows PC games on one box. That claim is older than Gamescom. Jason Ronald, Xbox’s vice president of next generation, put it in writing in March when he named the project and said the first-party console would run both libraries.

Sharma has run Xbox for six months after moving over from Microsoft’s AI work. She told the same interview that “within Xbox, we haven’t been healthy,” and that the next few years would be “challenging.” She also tied the reset to staying in business for the next 25 years. A family of devices is how she is now describing the hardware that has to carry that reset.

She would not say how many machines sit under the Helix name, and she would not say whether any of them take a disc. The useful part of the answer is the plural. Helix is no longer being sold, even in passing, as one living-room unit.

The Handhelds Are Already in Stores

Two Xbox-branded portables have been on sale since 16 October 2025. They are the ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X, built with ASUS, running Windows 11 Home, and booting into an Xbox full-screen overlay that hides most of the desktop. They play Xbox titles, Game Pass, Battle.net, and other PC storefronts from one library screen.

THE HANDHELDS ALREADY ON SALE

Spec ROG Xbox Ally ROG Xbox Ally X
US estimated retail $599.99 $999.99
Processor AMD Ryzen Z2 A AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme
Memory 16GB LPDDR5X-6400 24GB LPDDR5X-8000
Storage 512GB SSD 1TB SSD
Battery 60Wh 80Wh
Weight 670g 715g

Both use a 7-inch 1080p 120Hz panel. The cheaper unit is the value cut. The X adds impulse triggers, a bigger battery, and the AI-capable chip Microsoft said would pick up later features such as Auto SR. That is already a two-tier Xbox hardware family, sold under a partner brand, at prices that sit above a typical living-room console.

By early 2026, Circana analyst Matt Piscatella said Valve’s Steam Deck remained the more popular handheld and that Ally sales were “chugging along” at that price. Microsoft has not folded those machines into the Helix codename. It has also not explained how a future first-party portable would sit beside a $999.99 ASUS unit that already carries the Xbox button.

Owners who paid for the X have little reason to buy another portable of the same size. The open request around Sharma’s line is a disc-drive home machine, plus a first-party handheld, and she confirmed neither.

AMD’s Chip Deal Covered More Than One Box

On 19 June 2025, Xbox said it was building its next lineup across console, handheld, PC, cloud, and accessories. The company entered a multi-year deal with AMD to co-engineer silicon across a portfolio of devices, including future first-party consoles and cloud. AMD chief executive Lisa Su said the firm would design a full roadmap of Ryzen and Radeon chips for consoles, handhelds, PCs, and cloud.

Ronald made the same idea concrete at GDC on 11 March 2026. “One of the fundamental things we’re doing this generation, as opposed to designing one piece of silicon or an individual device, we’re now designing a family of silicon that will work across many different form factors, from your console to a handheld,” he said. Helix, in that talk, was the first console built on that shared chip plan, and it is supposed to give studios one path across “a whole spectrum” of devices.

HOW THE XBOX STACK CAME TOGETHER

  1. June 8, 2025: Reveals the ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X with ASUS.
  2. June 19, 2025: Announces the AMD deal for chips across console, handheld, PC, and cloud.
  3. October 16, 2025: Ships both handhelds worldwide.
  4. March 11, 2026: Names Project Helix, pledges a family of silicon, and sets developer alpha kits for 2027.
  5. April 30, 2026: Starts Xbox Mode on Windows 11 PCs, laptops, and tablets in select markets.
  6. August 26, 2026: Sharma calls Helix a family of devices and starts disc-to-digital testing.

Xbox Mode is the living-room overlay moved onto ordinary Windows machines. Ronald’s March note said Play Anywhere had grown to more than 1,500 games, with 500 development teams already shipping that way, so a purchase can follow a player across console, PC, and handheld. Sharma’s August plural did not invent that map. It put Helix’s name on it.

Why Helix Talks About Price Before Specs

Sharma spent more time on cost than on clocks. Component prices are up, she said, in part because AI buyers are taking memory and storage. She called the moment a Rampocalypse. Xbox, she said, has to think about hardware efficiency in storage and memory, and about price per unit, in a way the industry “has not had to do” before.

All of the industry needs to start to innovate on affordability and efficiency. That is something that we have not had to do. But with the crisis that’s currently happening in hardware and components, it is absolutely something all of us need to be thinking about and innovating on and giving people more choice in terms of how they play their console and how they purchase their console.

Asha Sharma, Xbox CEO, Gamescom interview

A family of devices is one way to offer that choice without publishing a flagship price. It is also how a chip house bins silicon: a full part in the expensive box, a cut-down part in the cheaper one, a low-power part in a handheld. Ronald had already told developers that Helix work includes deep texture compression and other tricks so games can lean on the SSD instead of stuffing more RAM into the bill of materials.

The same Gamescom week, Xbox began a disc-to-digital conversion for owned games. Sharma said 1,000 disc titles would gain a digital entitlement, and that a second-hand sale would take those rights with the disc. She still refused to say Helix itself will have a drive. If some Helix machines are digital-only, that conversion is how a shelf of discs is supposed to survive the change.

ASUS Still Builds the Portable Xbox

The Ally machines are a collaboration, not a Microsoft factory product. Roanne Sones, Xbox’s CVP for gaming devices, introduced them as hardware crafted with ASUS that combines Xbox software with Windows. They boot to the Xbox full-screen experience, expose an Xbox button and Game Bar, and still let a player install Steam, Discord, or mods because the OS underneath is Windows 11.

That split matters for Helix. Microsoft can put its overlay on partner PCs and keep first-party work for the living-room silicon AMD is co-designing. Ronald still called the home console “the heart of who we are” in March and said Xbox is “investing very heavily in Project Helix.” A family can include machines Microsoft does not tool itself. It can also include a first-party handheld that would compete with the Ally X it already helped launch.

Until the company draws that map, partner hardware is doing the portable job. Windows PCs on Xbox Mode are doing a third job. Helix is the name now stretched over whatever first-party boxes come next.

Series S and X Already Tested This Split

Xbox has sold parallel boxes in one generation before. Series X took the flagship slot with a disc drive. Series S took the cheaper, all-digital slot with less performance. Sharma’s family line will be read as that split until she shows something else, and the last split left games looking poorer on the budget machine.

WHAT A FAMILY HAS MEANT ON XBOX

  • Two performance tiers: Series X carried the premium cut while Series S sold a weaker digital box at a lower price.
  • Partner portables: The Ally and Ally X already sell two Windows handhelds with Xbox branding at $599.99 and $999.99.
  • One game license across screens: Play Anywhere and portable rights after a disc conversion are how Microsoft wants a purchase to follow the player when the hardware multiplies.

The last family also trained buyers to wait. A cheap SKU that cannot hold 4K or high frame-rate modes becomes the machine some households actually own, and studios then have to target it. A Helix family that repeats that pattern will spread the install base again, just as RAM and SSD costs are rising. Sharma’s affordability talk and that history sit in the same sentence whether she likes it or not.

The 2027 Alpha Kits Are the First Hard Date

Microsoft still has not listed the Helix devices, priced them, or said which of them take discs. Ronald did give studios one calendar mark: Xbox plans to ship alpha hardware to developers in 2027. He also said Helix uses a custom AMD SoC co-designed for the next DirectX and FSR, with what he called an order of magnitude leap in ray tracing, and that four generations of Xbox games should remain playable.

WHAT WE KNOW

  • The wording: Sharma called Helix a family of devices and said Microsoft would share more soon.
  • The chip plan: Ronald said Xbox is designing a family of silicon from console to handheld with AMD.
  • The machines on sale: ASUS already ships two Xbox handhelds, and Xbox Mode is rolling out on Windows 11 PCs.

WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED

  • The roster: Microsoft has not said how many Helix devices exist or whether the Ally counts as one.
  • The drive: Sharma would not say if any Helix box takes a disc.
  • The ticket: No consumer price or shop date has been set; 2027 is an alpha-kit year, not a launch year.

Sharma said the job for this next generation is to look at what is happening to parts costs and still build the best experience for players. The family she named is already partly in the wild as partner handhelds and a Windows overlay. The first-party boxes remain the missing pieces, and the 2027 kits are the first date that forces those pieces into a lab.
