Chainlink Puts Official US Inflation and GDP Onchain
Chainlink now serves official US PCE and GDP as live feeds, but Commerce also hashed GDP onto Bitcoin and Solana through other rails.
Chainlink on Tuesday said the U.S. Department of Commerce is using its network to put official real GDP, the PCE Price Index, and Real Final Sales to Private Domestic Purchasers onchain. The six feeds, each series as a level and as an annual rate, run on 10 public blockchains.
Those feeds first went live on August 28, 2025. A year later the useful fact is not the handshake. It is that a smart contract can now read the same BEA print a trading desk already treats as gospel, while Commerce still ships the same GDP file through other rails.

Six BEA Series Now Live as Chainlink Feeds
Chainlink Data Feeds pull the figures from Bureau of Economic Analysis releases and publish them so applications do not have to paste each print by hand. Updates follow the BEA calendar, monthly or quarterly as each series drops. The first ten networks are Ethereum, Arbitrum, Avalanche, Base, Botanix, Linea, Mantle, Optimism, Sonic, and ZKsync. Chainlink said more chains can be added if users ask.
Real GDP is the inflation-adjusted size of U.S. output, shown in billions of chained 2017 dollars and as a quarter-over-quarter annual rate. The PCE Price Index, the Federal Reserve’s preferred inflation gauge, is an index with 2017 set to 100, plus its annual rate of change. Real Final Sales to Private Domestic Purchasers tracks inflation-adjusted spending by households and private firms, again as a level and as a rate. Chainlink lists all six under a Custom risk tag.

The same documentation page posts the Ethereum addresses for the six feeds and, in the same U.S. government category, a Secured Overnight Financing Rate contract at 0xBc8f5e8B47D69fa10A4B64eC5B45b466f81B77CA. SOFR is a New York Fed rate, not a BEA series, so it sits beside the Commerce package rather than inside the original six. Chainlink says the feed stack holds ISO 27001 certification and a SOC 2 Type 1 attestation, and that more than 2,400 integrations already consume its other data products.
Commerce Hashed Q2 GDP Onto Bitcoin and Solana
The same Thursday, Commerce did something Chainlink’s ten-chain list does not cover. It took the BEA’s second-estimate PDF for second-quarter 2025, ran SHA256 on the file, and published that digest, plus the headline growth rate in some cases, on nine networks: Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, TRON, Stellar, Avalanche, Arbitrum One, Polygon PoS, and Optimism. Coinbase, Gemini, and Kraken helped with the postings, including the fees.
The department called it the first time a federal agency had published economic statistical data this way on a blockchain. Real GDP rose at an annual rate of 3.3 percent in that print. The PDF is gdp2q25-2nd.pdf. The SHA256 digest is c70972a12908b73c2407d9cc6842ba2a02203a690f3090cd29f30c45f0cfd93d. On Bitcoin the transaction is fcf172401ca9d89013f13f5bbf0fc7577cb8a3588bf5cbc3b458ff36635fec00. On Ethereum and several EVM chains the hash contract is 0x36ccdF11044f60F196e981970d592a7DE567ed7b. Commerce published an official hash of the Q2 GDP file as a memo or as contract storage, depending on what each chain allows, and said the posting is informational and does not endorse any chain.
Chainlink said it did not take part in uploading those hashes. A hash of a PDF is a tamper-evident copy of one vintage. It is not a live feed a lending pool can call every quarter. Bitcoin, Solana, TRON, Stellar, and Polygon were in the hash set and out of Chainlink’s first ten. Base, Botanix, Linea, Mantle, Sonic, and ZKsync were in the live-feed set and out of the hash set. Only Ethereum, Avalanche, Arbitrum, and Optimism appeared in both.
THE COMMERCE ONCHAIN CALENDAR
- August 28, 2025: Commerce hashes the Q2 2025 GDP PDF across nine chains and confirms oracle work with Chainlink and Pyth.
- October 6, 2025: BNB Chain starts carrying the same BEA series through Chainlink, the first named expansion past the original ten.
- December 9, 2025: Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick tells a Blockchain Association gala he wants the rest of Commerce’s numbers, then other agencies, on chain.
- July 30, 2026: Chainlink posts a fresh onchain real GDP reading of 1.5 percent, matching that day’s BEA advance estimate for the second quarter.
- September 1, 2026: Chainlink again lists real GDP, PCE, and Real Final Sales as live Commerce feeds.
A hash is a snapshot. A Data Feed is a pipe. Commerce built both on the same day and did not give either job to one vendor.
Why the PCE Feed Matters More Than GDP
GDP is the political number. PCE is the one a rate contract would actually want. The Federal Reserve already uses the Personal Consumption Expenditures Price Index as its main inflation gauge, so an onchain PCE print is the same series Washington uses to talk about prices, not a crypto-native substitute. Once that index and its annual rate are callable from a feed, a token, a perpetual, or a prediction market can settle against official inflation without a human posting the BEA release into a contract.
That is the second-order change. Price oracles already tell DeFi what ETH is worth. They have not, until this package, given those same contracts a government inflation input with a Commerce provenance trail. Chainlink’s own list of uses is blunt: automated trading, tokenized-asset composition, new digital-asset types, inflation-linked products, perpetual futures, prediction markets, dashboards, and DeFi risk rules tied to macro prints.
It’s only fitting that the Commerce Department and President Donald Trump, the Crypto-President, publicly release economic statistical data on the blockchain. We are making America’s economic truth immutable and globally accessible like never before, cementing our role as the blockchain capital of the world. And everybody has to admit that 3.3% GDP growth is impressive.
Howard Lutnick, U.S. Secretary of Commerce, Commerce Department statement, August 28, 2025
Immutable is a chain word. BEA numbers are not. A contract that treats the latest PCE round as final is betting on a vintage, not on a stone tablet. The political line still matters because it is why the feeds exist at all: Lutnick has said he wants Commerce bureaus, then the rest of the government, to distribute statistics this way.
GDP Prints Keep Moving After the Hash
BEA does not publish one GDP number. It publishes an advance estimate about a month after the quarter closes, a second estimate about a month later, and a third about a month after that. Annual updates then reopen several years. An October 2024 BEA note on vintages from 1999 through 2023 put the average revision to real GDP growth, ignoring sign, at 0.5 percentage point from advance to second, 0.7 from advance to third, and 1.2 percentage points from advance to the latest estimate.
Those gaps are large enough to flip a poorly written payoff. A market that settles on the advance print and never reads the third is not using “the” GDP number. It is using Tuesday’s GDP number. Chainlink feeds update when BEA updates, which is the honest design, but it means last quarter’s onchain reading can move. The Bitcoin hash of gdp2q25-2nd.pdf will not. That file is the second estimate, frozen.
The latest full example is already on the site. BEA’s second estimate for second-quarter 2026, dated August 26, left real GDP at 1.5 percent, the same as the advance. It still revised the series a contract might actually key off.
HOW Q2 2026 NUMBERS MOVED IN ONE MONTH
| Series (SAAR) | Advance | Second estimate | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Real GDP | 1.5% | 1.5% | unchanged |
| Real final sales to private domestic purchasers | 3.9% | 4.2% | +0.3 point |
| PCE price index | 5.1% | 5.3% | +0.2 point |
| PCE price index excluding food and energy | 3.4% | 3.6% | +0.2 point |
Final sales, the demand measure in the Chainlink pack, jumped 0.3 point. Headline PCE, the inflation feed, jumped 0.2 point. Anyone who coded a trigger on the July 30 advance numbers would have been wrong on two of the three Commerce series by late August, and right on GDP only because that one did not move. On September 30 BEA will release the third estimate for the same quarter and start its 2026 annual update, which reopens national accounts from the first quarter of 2021 through the first quarter of 2026. Feeds that track BEA will move with that file too.
Five Years of Quarterly GDP on Pyth’s 100 Chains
Pyth Network posted its own Commerce note the same day as Chainlink. After what it called months of talks with the department and with Lutnick, Pyth said it would offer five years of quarterly GDP data at first and then a wider set of series. It pitched a network that already spanned more than 100 blockchains and more than 600 applications, a distribution map Chainlink’s first ten names do not match.
So the government split the job in public. Chainlink got a recurring six-feed product on a short list of mostly Ethereum-linked chains, with live contract addresses a developer can call today. Pyth got history and breadth. Commerce kept a third path of its own, the PDF hash, on Bitcoin and Solana, where neither oracle’s live BEA pack was in the first wave. The department said it will keep adding chains, oracles, and exchanges. That is a procurement posture, not a wedding.
Lutnick’s later remarks run the same way. At the December gala he said he had already put GDP on a chain and wanted “all of our numbers” out, then the rest of the government on the rails Commerce had started. The White House digital-assets report in July 2025 had already named Chainlink as part of the stack for stablecoins and tokenized funds. None of that makes the BEA feeds exclusive. It makes them one official on-ramp among several the department is willing to stand up.
Inflation-Linked Tokens Can Read Washington Directly
No major issuer has, in public, launched a product that pays coupon or margin off these six addresses. The gap is the point of the feeds, not a claim that the products exist. What changed is the input. A builder who wants an inflation-linked note, a GDP swap, or a prediction market on the next PCE print no longer has to trust a bot that scrapes BEA, or a committee that types the number in.
WHAT THE FEEDS ARE BUILT TO TRIGGER
- Inflation-linked assets: Tokens or notes that reset against the PCE level or the PCE annual rate, using the same gauge the Fed cites.
- Demand and growth payoffs: Contracts that reference real GDP or Real Final Sales, including the private-demand series BEA just revised by 0.3 point.
- Prediction markets: Markets that resolve on the official print instead of a volunteer reading of a PDF.
- DeFi risk rules: Lending or perpetual protocols that tighten or loosen when onchain PCE or GDP crosses a bound.
- Tokenized-credit overlays: Funds that already issue on public chains can now point a covenant at a government series rather than at an internal model.
That last bucket is no longer theoretical as a market, even if these feeds are still unused in it. Managers are already putting tokenized high-yield credit on four chains. A PCE read would let those structures talk about real yield with a government index instead of a private inflation proxy. Chainlink’s other U.S. work, including price feeds for Coinbase’s tokenized stocks on Base, is the same pattern: official or venue data, wrapped so a contract can call it.
LINK itself is no longer only a DeFi ticker. The Bitwise Chainlink ETF on NYSE Arca gives listed-market accounts a way to hold the oracle’s token while the same firm’s data product carries Commerce figures. The people who will actually wire PCE into a payoff sit in data engineering at macro desks, not in retail Discord. A year of quiet updates, including the July 1.5 percent GDP post, looks like that audience being trained that the print will be there when they want it.
On September 30 the third Q2 estimate and the annual update will hit the same pipes. Whatever number a contract holds the day before will change if BEA changes it. That is how official statistics work, and it is how these feeds work too.
Frequently Asked Questions
What Units Do the Chainlink Commerce Feeds Use?
Real GDP and Real Final Sales levels are raw figures in billions of chained 2017 dollars. The two PCE series use an index with 2017 equal to 100 for the level and a quarter-over-quarter seasonally adjusted annual rate for the change. The four rate feeds are all QoQ SAAR percent, the same convention BEA uses in its news releases, so a contract that compares the feed to the BEA table is comparing like with like.
How Does the PCE Price Index Differ From CPI?
CPI is a Bureau of Labor Statistics basket. PCE is BEA’s measure of prices paid for domestic consumer goods and services, and the Fed has long treated headline and core PCE as its main inflation gauges. Commerce did not put CPI on these Chainlink feeds. Pyth and department officials have talked about later BLS series, including CPI, as a possible next step, but that is not in the live six.
Did Commerce Put Live Chainlink Feeds on Bitcoin?
No. Bitcoin received the SHA256 digest of the Q2 2025 second-estimate PDF and, where the chain allowed, the 3.3 percent headline, in transaction fcf172401ca9d89013f13f5bbf0fc7577cb8a3588bf5cbc3b458ff36635fec00. Chainlink’s recurring six-feed product launched on ten networks that do not include Bitcoin or Solana. A user who wants a callable PCE round on those two chains has to look at Pyth or at some later expansion, not at the original Chainlink list.
When Does BEA Replace an Advance GDP Print?
The advance estimate comes out near the end of the first month after the quarter. The second estimate replaces it about a month later, and the third follows about a month after that. Income-side series such as GDI and corporate profits often skip the advance and appear with the second or third GDP release. Annual updates then reopen several years of quarters; the 2026 round is scheduled for September 30 and covers 2021 through early 2026.
Can Developers Still Pull the Same Figures Offchain?
Yes. Commerce pointed the public back to the BEA application programming interface at apps.bea.gov as the standard offchain path, and the hashed PDF remains on BEA’s site. The Chainlink and Pyth products do not replace that API. They wrap selected series so a smart contract can read them without a custom server in the middle.
The next BEA drop that will rewrite the onchain rounds is already on the calendar: September 30, third estimate and annual update, same figures, new vintage.
