Amazon’s $179 AirPods Pro 3 Squeeze the New AirPods 5
Amazon cut AirPods Pro 3 to $179 two days before Prime Big Deal Days, leaving Apple’s new $149 AirPods 5 with a $30 gap.
Amazon listed Apple’s AirPods Pro 3 at $179 on October 4, a $70 cut from the $249 price Apple still prints. That is the first drop under $190 since June Prime Day, and it landed two days before Prime Big Deal Days opens.
Sixteen days after AirPods 5 reached stores, the new open-ear pair still costs $129, or $149 with a wireless charging case, so last year’s flagship now costs only $30 more than Apple’s newest buds.
Amazon Has AirPods Pro 3 at $179
The listing went up on October 4, and deal accounts were still pointing at the same Amazon price on October 5. Apple’s own product page has not moved. Shoppers can already order AirPods Pro 3 for $179, which is 28% below list.
THE OCTOBER 4 CUT
- Street price: Amazon has the current Pro buds at $179, sold against Apple’s $249 list.
- The markdown: That is $70 off, the same 28% cut the product page math produces from those two figures.
- The floor: June’s brief $169 print remains the cheapest these buds have been, so October’s ticket sits $10 above that low.
- The calendar: Prime Big Deal Days does not open until 12:01 a.m. PDT on October 6.
Early October listings had the same pair near $234, and summer promotions had lingered around $199. The $179 return is the first time the price has gone under $190 since the June event, which matches how thin the street market had been after that sale ended.
The $30 Gap Leaves AirPods 5 Looking Thin
Apple unveiled AirPods 5 on September 9, 2026, and put them in stores on September 18. Dave Pakula, vice president of Hardware Engineering, said the company was bringing active noise cancellation to its most affordable AirPods. Both versions include ANC. The $129 pair uses a USB-C case. AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case cost $149 and add stem volume swipe, a Find My speaker, and up to five hours of listening with ANC.
On October 4 those two SKUs still listed at those launch prices. The Pro 3, a year older, did not. The $30 step from the $149 case to $179 is now smaller than the stack Apple kept exclusive to the in-ear model: a sealed fit, a longer charge, heart rate sensing, and hearing tools.
THE LADDER ON OCTOBER 4
| Model | Apple list | Amazon Oct 4 | ANC on one charge | Heart rate | Hearing tools |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AirPods 5 | $129 | $129 | Up to 4 hours | No | No |
| AirPods 5, wireless case | $149 | $149 | Up to 5 hours | No | No |
| AirPods Pro 3 | $249 | $179 | Up to 8 hours | Yes | Yes |
At that spread, the remaining choice is whether you want silicone tips that seal the ear canal. People who hate in-ear tips still have a reason to pay $149 for the open shape. Everyone else is looking at a $30 upcharge for the model Apple still prices as a $249 product.
What $179 Still Buys in the Case
Apple said the Pro 3 would start at $249 in the U.S. when pre-orders opened on September 9, 2025, with stores stocking them on September 19. That list price is the one Apple still shows. The hardware inside the $179 box has not been stripped.
WHAT STAYS IN THE $179 BOX
- The seal: Foam-infused tips in five sizes, including a new XXS, after more than 10,000 ear scans and 100,000 hours of user research.
- The quiet: Apple rates in-ear ANC at up to 2x more noise removed than AirPods Pro 2, and 4x more than the original AirPods Pro.
- The charge: Up to 8 hours with ANC, a 33% gain on the prior Pro, up to 10 hours in Transparency, and up to 24 hours with the case.
- The case: USB-C plus MagSafe, Qi, and Apple Watch charging, with a speaker and a U2 chip for Find My.
- The rating: IP57 dust, sweat, and water resistance on the buds.
Apple also rebuilt the acoustic layout with a multiport design it says widens bass and vocal detail, and it cut each bud down so the tip sits on the centerline of the body. New buyers can still get three months of Apple Music and Fitness+ if they have not used those trials.
June Already Cut These to $169
October is the second time in 2026 that a Prime event has pulled this SKU $70 below list. The cheaper print came first, and it did not last.
THE PRICE TRACK SINCE LAUNCH
- September 9, 2025: Apple announces AirPods Pro 3 at $249, with stores opening September 19.
- June 17, 2026: Amazon lists the same pair at $169, $80 off, the lowest price tracked since launch.
- June 23, 2026: The four-day June Prime Day runs, and $169 stock comes and goes while $179 is easier to hold.
- September 9, 2026: Apple launches AirPods 5 at $129 and $149, after the Pro 3 street price had climbed back off that floor.
- October 4, 2026: Amazon returns the Pro 3 to $179, $10 above the June low and $70 below Apple’s list.
Walmart had already printed $179 in mid-June, and Amazon and Target matched. The $169 Amazon flash was the outlier, and it sold through. Anyone waiting in October for that extra $10 is betting Amazon will reprint a price it could not keep in June.
Live Translation Runs on Cheaper Buds Too
Deal copy keeps bundling live translation with the Pro 3 as if it were a flagship extra. Apple’s AirPods 5 launch said the same feature, powered by Apple Intelligence, is available across the entire AirPods lineup once the buds sit on a supported iPhone with the latest software.
The in-ear demo from 2025 still stands. You press both stems, ask Siri to start Live Translation, or use the iPhone Action button, then hear the other person in your language while your phone can show a transcript the other way. Apple first shipped it in English, French, German, Portuguese, and Spanish, with Italian, Japanese, Korean, and simplified Chinese promised later in 2025. It also came to AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods 4 with ANC on the same software path.
So translation does not justify the $30 step. Adaptive Audio, Transparency, Conversation Awareness, Personalized Spatial Audio, and the H2 chip sit on both lines as well. The Pro 3’s case for the extra money is the seal, the battery, and the health sensors, not the translator.
Heart Rate and Hearing Stay on Pro
Those health parts are the clean split. AirPods 5 do not measure heart rate and do not run Apple’s hearing test, hearing aid, or hearing protection modes. The Pro 3 do.
With AirPods Pro 3, the most popular headphones take a massive leap forward, providing fantastic sound quality and the world’s best ANC of any in-ear wireless headphones.
John Ternus, senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, Apple newsroom
Apple put a custom PPG sensor in the buds that pulses infrared light 256 times a second to read blood flow, then folds in the accelerometers, gyroscope, GPS, and an on-device model on iPhone. You can start up to 50 workout types in the Fitness app, log heart rate and calories, and close the Move ring without an Apple Watch. Workout Buddy, for Fitness+ subscribers, talks through the session from that same data.
On the hearing side, a five-minute at-home test feeds a clinical-grade hearing aid profile, Conversation Boost now kicks in on its own in loud rooms, and Hearing Protection is certified in the EU and UK. Transparency runtime rises 67% to 10 hours when that stack is in use. None of that migrates to the $129 or $149 open-ear pair.
Battery is the other hard line. The wireless AirPods 5 are rated at 5 hours with ANC and 22 hours with the case. The Pro 3 are rated at 8 hours and 24 hours. That is three extra hours on a charge, which is the difference on a long flight or a workday that does not pass a charger.
Prime Big Deal Days Has Not Opened Yet
Amazon’s fall event is still ahead of the $179 tag. The company said Prime Big Deal Days returns October 6-7 with 48 hours of exclusive deals for members in 22 countries, starting at 12:01 a.m. PDT on October 6. New “Today’s Big Deals” drop at midnight, 8 a.m., and 1 p.m. PDT on both days, and the company is pushing Alexa deal alerts and 365-day price history on product pages.
Apple does not discount AirPods on its own site, so any deeper cut would come from Amazon or another retailer, as it did in June. The official 48 hours could reprint $169, hold $179, or bounce the SKU back toward $199 once the event clock stops.
WHAT WE KNOW
- The live ticket: Amazon had AirPods Pro 3 at $179 on October 4 and October 5, $70 below Apple’s $249 list.
- The event window: Prime Big Deal Days runs 48 hours from 12:01 a.m. PDT on October 6 through October 7.
- The cheaper print: $169 in June is still the lowest tracked price, and that stock did not stay up.
WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED
- A $169 encore: No listing on October 4 or 5 showed that June floor coming back.
- A matching AirPods 5 cut: The new $129 and $149 pairs had no Prime markdown alongside the Pro 3.
The $179 price is already on Amazon, two days before the sale Amazon named, and it leaves the new AirPods 5 at full list with a $30 gap. The only cheaper figure these buds have carried is the $169 flash from June, and that one did not linger.
