Hamnet Took the Drama Prize Sinners Wanted

Going into the ballroom, Coogler’s Jim Crow-era vampire film looked like the drama to beat. “Hamnet” got there first. Chloé Zhao’s Focus Features drama, adapted with Maggie O’Farrell from O’Farrell’s novel about William and Agnes Shakespeare after the death of their son, won Best Motion Picture, Drama. Jessie Buckley won drama actress as Agnes. Zhao, a previous Globe winner for “Nomadland,” had been nominated for director and screenplay and did not win those two.

Steven Spielberg joined Zhao and the cast onstage. She quoted Paul Mescal on making the film, saying it taught him that an artist has to be vulnerable enough to be seen. Both picture winners that night were parent-and-child stories. Anderson’s film follows an ex-revolutionary, played by DiCaprio, trying to reach his daughter, played by Infiniti, after a police state puts them in its sights.

“Sinners” still left with two Globes of its own.
