Harbor Freight’s Purple Storage Sells Color, Not New Boxes

Harbor Freight’s purple U.S. General 72-inch roll cab lists at $1,699.99 and is currently unavailable. The color reached stores in 2026 on the same Series 3 steel the chain already sold in red, black, blue, and gray.

Harbor Freight staged that powder coat in Las Vegas on November 4, 2025, after years of customers asking for purple. The drawers, slides, and locks did not change.

Purple Steel on the Same Series 3 Boxes

U.S. GENERAL is Harbor Freight’s house storage line, built as modular roll cabs, top chests, hutches, and side boxes that bolt into one bay. Purple is a powder-coated finish on that wall, chip, scratch, and rust resistant per the company, not a new slide or lock.

Roll cabs and top chests come in 27 in., 42 in., 56 in., and 72 in. Hutches come in 56 in. and 72 in., with built-in power ports that charge tools under a closed lid and a rubber mat on the work surface. The 22 in. end locker adds 24,600 cu. in. and a power port behind the door. The 15 in. end cabinet adds 5,000 cu. in. and a 720 lb. rating, and it mounts on either side of a roll cab.

Harbor Freight’s own copy still sells the shared Series 3 kit: full-width drawer latches, full-extension ball bearing slides, a single keyhole barrel lock, and four casters, two fixed and two locking swivel. Purple did not rewrite that list. It put a requested color on steel that already existed, then hung a Snap-on price next to it.

SEMA Got the Unveil, Stores Got the Wait

Harbor Freight unveiled purple storage at SEMA on November 4, 2025, and told buyers the pieces would arrive in stores and online early the next year, only at Harbor Freight. SEMA draws more than 161,000 attendees a year, from over 140 countries, with 3,300 media reps on the floor. The booth video put the ask on the record.

A Harbor Freight staffer on the floor said the five-drawer cart and the full-bank cart were already in purple, and that large storage would follow, some of it as late as April or May 2026. That gap is the whole launch. The color was the headline in November. The steel showed up on a clock.

FROM THE SEMA FLOOR TO THE AISLE

  1. November 4, 2025: Harbor Freight shows purple Series 3 roll cabs, top chests, hutches, an end locker, and an end cabinet in Las Vegas and says they land early the next year.
  2. January 4, 2026: The company says purple large storage is available to order in 72 in., 56 in., 42 in., and 27 in., plus side lockers and top chests.
  3. March 3, 2026: A Calabasas newsroom note says purple storage has been added to the U.S. GENERAL lineup.
  4. March 23, 2026: Harbor Freight’s own guide says the color is here, online and in stores, including the mini toolbox that went viral.

The January clip is the order window, not the first coat of paint. By then the chain was already selling Harbor Freight tools for 2026 as a wider drop, and purple storage was one SKU wall inside that calendar.

$1,699.99 and Currently Unavailable

The 72-inch purple roll cab listing is SKU 73342, priced at $1,699.99, and it reads currently unavailable, with a note to check back soon. Harbor Freight still prints a Snap-on KCP2423BN at $8,905 beside it and a stated save of $7,205.

THE 72-INCH PURPLE CAB ON PAPER

  • Storage volume: 29,700 cu. in. across 14 drawers, including two double-width drawers and a power-tool drawer.
  • Load rating: 6,600 lb. on 6 in. casters, two fixed and two locking swivel, on a 490 lb. steel body.
  • Slides and lock: Full-extension ball bearings at 120 lb. per pair, full-width latches, and one barrel lock.
  • In-drawer power: Five 120V outlets plus USB-A and USB-C, so batteries charge inside the box.

Those specs are Series 3, not a purple-only rebuild. The listing also blocks shipping to Alaska or Hawaii because the cab is oversized, and the warranty on the page is 90 days from purchase. The colorway is what sold out of the web cart.

You guys have been asking for purple, and we heard you loud and clear.

Harbor Freight, product video, January 4, 2026

That line is the pitch. The 72-inch page is the result: the most expensive purple cab is the one you cannot add to the cart.

What a Full Purple Bay Costs

Smaller purple cabs still show as in stock on Harbor Freight’s related listings, which is how a shop ends up with a 42-inch or 56-inch box in purple and a hole where the 72-inch should sit. List prices below are the purple Series 3 figures on those pages, not a coupon stack.

PURPLE SERIES 3 STREET PRICES

Mini steel toolbox 11 in. wide $19.99 In-store only

A separate coupon priced the purple 56-inch roll cab, item 73347, at $799.99 through September 13, 2026, which is a sale against that $899.99 list, not a second list price. The 56-inch purple top chest, SKU 73345, is $599.99 with 20,100 cu. in., eight drawers, dual gas struts, and a power port under a closed lid, and Harbor Freight prints a Snap-on KRA1410PBO at $4,795 beside it for a stated save of $4,195. The chest fits Series 2 and Series 3 56-inch roll cabs, so a shop can drop purple on an older bottom box.

Roll Cabs and Top Chests

The 56-inch Series 3 roll cab is the double-bank workhorse at $899.99. The 42-inch sits at $599.99 and the 27-inch at $379.99, which is where a home garage actually starts. Pair a 56-inch cab and the matching top chest and the register already shows $1,499.98 before a locker or hutch, still under the 72-inch’s $1,699.99, and you can check out.

Hutches, Lockers, and the End Cab

The 56-inch work center hutch lists at $499.99 on the Series 3 wall, with slotted holders for screwdrivers and aerosol cans. The 22-inch locker is $399.99. The 15-inch end cabinet is $279.99 on Series 3 listings. Harbor Freight also lists a 30 in. 4-drawer tech cart in the purple collection at 12,600 cu. in. of total volume, 4,500 of it lockable, for shops that want a mobile cart instead of a full cab.

The $19.99 Mini Toolbox Still Spreads the Color

Harbor Freight’s March 23 guide puts the “customer favorite mini toolbox that went viral on social media” in the purple set on purpose. The mini steel toolbox, SKU 73279, is $19.99 and in-store only. Each of the two drawers is rated at 5 lb., 10 lb. total, with ball bearing slides, a top that opens past 90 degrees, aluminum drawer trim, a magnetic drawer catch, and precut liners.

WHAT SHIPPED IN PURPLE

  • Large storage: Series 3 roll cabs and top chests in 27, 42, 56, and 72 in., plus 56 and 72 in. hutches.
  • Side boxes: A 22 in. end locker and a 15 in. end cabinet, both modular to the roll cabs.
  • The viral piece: The mini steel toolbox at $19.99, in-store only, the cheap object people actually carry out.
  • Small magnets: A 25 lb. purple magnetic hook at $7.99, SKU 73437, plus matching cup, glove, and paper-towel holders on the same wall.

At SEMA the company also cut the mini in slate gray and green, on top of black, red, and blue, and the older mini page already claimed more than 2,000 five-star reviews. Purple on the $19.99 box is how a color reaches people who will never park a 490 lb. cab in the driveway. Garage photos months later are still of that cheap box as much as of the 72-inch.

Gray Cabinets Landed First

Late in 2025 Harbor Freight said U.S. General would gain three new exterior colors: purple, slate gray, and green. Gray and green reached the aisle first. Purple was the delayed shade, which is how a buyer ends up with a full gray 56-inch from a 2025 sale and then watches purple go live in January.

That sequence is a second bill, not a free upgrade. Series 3 pieces mix across colors, so a gray cab can wear a purple locker, and Harbor Freight says so in its FAQ. Most people who waited for a single-color bay did not want a two-tone joke. They wanted the powder coat they had been asking for, on every face, and they missed the window by a few months.

Online-only days at the start of January also cut into the coupon game, because a web-only cab does not always take the single-item exclusion codes stores run on other colors. The 56-inch purple coupon to $799.99 came later. The 72-inch never needed a coupon to disappear from the cart.

Customers Voted With Comments, Then With Carts

Harbor Freight’s March guide says the color was “asked for by customers.” The ask is older than SEMA. People have been needling the chain for a purple box for years, and the official line in November was that the company heard it. Under booth lights some viewers still read the coat as closer to cobalt than plum, which did not slow the cart-adds once SKUs went live.

The complaints that stuck are about the kit around the paint, not the price tag against Snap-on.

STILL MISSING FROM THE PURPLE WALL

  • A 42-inch hutch: Hutches ship in 56 in. and 72 in. only, so a 42-inch cab has no matching overhead in this color.
  • Metal flake: Buyers keep wanting a candy-flake coat like the metallic red Daytona 3-ton jack, and the cabs stayed flat powder coat.
  • ICON in purple: The premium ICON line was on the SEMA floor as a G2 prototype; the color playground stayed on U.S. General.

Accessories lagged the cabs too. Early in 2026 the big boxes were purple while some magnetic extras were not. By September a purple 25 lb. hook at $7.99 was an add-to-cart item, which is the second-order bill of a color drop: once the cab is purple, the paper-towel holder has to match or the bay looks unfinished.

Eight Other Colors on the Same Slides

Harbor Freight will mix purple with red, black, white, blue, orange, yellow, green, and slate gray, the eight other colors already on the Series 3 wall. That FAQ line is a release valve for the 72-inch stock-out. It is also an admission that purple is one chip on a paint deck, not a new toolbox family. The earlier purple U.S. General cabinets were the same bet at the first drop: sell the coat, keep the slides.

The 72-inch purple listing still tells shoppers to check back soon. The $19.99 mini toolbox remains in-store only, and the rest of the Series 3 wall is still for sale in purple if a local aisle has it. If it does not, that same steel is sitting in eight other colors, with the same latches, on the same casters.
