Hogwarts Legacy Went Free on Epic, Then Came Back
Epic gave Hogwarts Legacy away at The Game Awards and again in April, stuffed Fortnite with house gear, and Warner later named a sequel in writing.
Epic Games put Hogwarts Legacy on the house for a week at The Game Awards, then asked players to spend two hours in it for a Fortnite back bling. The $59.99 PC copy was free to claim from December 11, 2025 through December 18 at 11 a.m. ET, and it stayed in any library that grabbed it in time.
Warner Bros. Games spent that same week telling the press the 2023 RPG had sold 40 million copies. The gift wrap was real. So was the funnel behind it.
The Mystery Present at The Game Awards
Epic usually shows the next free game a week early. For this slot it posted a wrapped holiday box and told people to watch The Game Awards on December 11. The reveal landed with the broadcast, not in the store’s usual Thursday morning window, and the listing went live as the show ran.
Avalanche Software’s open-world RPG, published by Warner Bros. Games under the Portkey Games label, had never been free on Epic before. Anyone who signed in, hit Get, and completed a $0.00 checkout kept the base game. That was the original free-claim window on Epic, and it closed seven days later when the next mystery title replaced it.
Demand hit the storefront immediately. Users said pages failed to load and checkout stalled after the announcement, which is what a $59.99 Wizarding World game does when it hits $0 on a Thursday night.
Play Two Hours, Unlock a Fortnite Frog
Epic did not treat the drop as a standalone PC gift. In a December 11 note it framed a Harry Potter week across Fortnite and Rocket League, with the free RPG as the login bait.
THE EPIC ECOSYSTEM PITCH
- The store: Hogwarts Legacy was free on the Epic Games Store through December 18 at 11 a.m. ET as the first Holiday Sale giveaway.
- The chore: Two hours in that PC copy, on the same account used for Fortnite, unlocked the Chocolate Frog Back Bling.
- The shop: Later in December the Fortnite Shop sold outfits that could be set to Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw, or Hufflepuff.
- The other game: Rocket League’s Frosty Fest ran a Hogwarts House Rivalry with house points, challenges, and shop items.
The free RPG was the on-ramp. Fortnite got a cosmetic earn and a house-skin shop. Rocket League got a branded event. PC players who wanted the frog had to install an 85 GB game and sit in it.

Harry himself stayed out of the Battle Bus for that first wave. The paid Fortnite outfits were generic students in house colours, not the film cast, which kept the crossover in wardrobe and mounts instead of a full character drop.
40 Million Units, Posted While Copies Went Free
On December 17, 2025, with one day left on the claim clock, Warner Bros. Games said Hogwarts Legacy had sold more than 40 million units worldwide. The Burbank release called it the biggest game in the history of Warner Bros. Games and listed PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, PC, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One.
The official account posted a thank-you the same day.

Those 40 million are units sold, not Epic grants. A free claim is a license, not a sale, and the press line tracks paid copies across consoles and PC. The overlap is still the joke: the publisher bragged about a franchise peak while the PC edition was a holiday loss leader.
THE PAID LIFE BEFORE THE $0 WEEK
- February 10, 2023: Hogwarts Legacy launches on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store.
- February 23, 2023: Warner Bros. Discovery says more than 12 million copies and $850 million in global revenue.
- May 5, 2023: Sales reach 15 million copies and $1 billion; PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions arrive the same day.
- End of 2023: The tally hits 22 million copies.
- October 2024: Sales reach 30 million.
- Late March 2025: The figure stands at 34 million, six million short of the December mark.
- June 5, 2025: A Nintendo Switch 2 version goes on sale.
- December 11, 2025: Epic starts the first free PC window.
- December 17, 2025: Warner Bros. Games posts the 40 million milestone.
Six million paid copies in nine months is still a live catalogue. Putting the PC SKU on the house did not create that number. It did tell anyone still paying full freight on PC that the remaining shelf life had a date on it.
Steam Buyers Ate the Cost on PC
The giveaway was Epic-only. Console owners on PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch paid as usual. PC players who already owned the game on Steam did not get a matching credit, and at least one of them said they had just bought it in a Steam sale when Epic set the price to zero.
That is the store war in one night. Steam kept the money from people who paid. Epic kept the accounts, the install base, and the Fortnite locker hook. Warner Bros. still booked the 40 million as paid units and used the week to point traffic at the official Hogwarts Legacy site.
The two-hour frog gate made the “free” copy a job. You could skip the RPG and still buy house skins in Fortnite, but the Chocolate Frog was tied to playtime on the Epic build. People who wanted the back bling had to download the whole game, run it, and wait for the locker grant after December 18.
Console players asking whether they were included were not. Nothing in the promotion moved a PlayStation or Xbox license. The mystery present was a PC launcher event wearing a Game Awards bow.
What the Holiday Calendar Opened Next
Hogwarts Legacy was the tentpole, not the whole calendar. When the claim window died on December 18, Epic flipped to daily mystery games, starting with Jotunnslayer: Hordes of Hel at a $14.99 list price for 24 hours. The store had already said many more free titles and discounts would follow through the Holiday Sale.
THE FIRST DROPS AFTER THE TENTPOLE
| Game | Free window | List price |
|---|---|---|
| Hogwarts Legacy | December 11-18, 2025 | $59.99 |
| Jotunnslayer: Hordes of Hel | December 18-19, 2025 | $14.99 |
| Disco Elysium: The Final Cut | December 25-26, 2025 | $39.99 |
| Chivalry 2 | December 31, 2025-January 1, 2026 | $39.99 |
The daily list after Hogwarts was smaller, weirder, and easier to miss if you only logged in for the Potter game. That was the point of holding the $59.99 title for a week and then accelerating. People who came for the castle stayed for the login streak, which is how Epic’s freebie calendar into 2026 keeps a launcher in the tray.
Critics had already settled. Epic’s store page still shows an OpenCritic average of 84 and an 88% recommend rate, with a 4.7 player score. The giveaway did not reopen that argument. It moved the remaining PC copies off the paid shelf and into libraries that might never have bought them.
A Second Free Window Arrived in May
Anyone who missed December got another shot. From May 1 through May 3, 2026, Epic put the PC edition back at $0, this time as a short 25th-anniversary beat for the Harry Potter films, running beside the usual weekly freebie rather than as the holiday mystery box.
Two free windows in five months is not how a current $70 campaign behaves. It is how a finished single-player game behaves once the publisher would rather have installs than a leftover PC price. The May drop was quieter than the Game Awards stunt and much shorter, which is a second chance, not a third holiday season.
By September 2026, the current Epic Games Store listing had the base game back on a paid tag, then cut it by 90%.
EPIC PC PRICES IN SEPTEMBER 2026
| SKU | List price | Sale price |
|---|---|---|
| Hogwarts Legacy (base) | $59.99 | $5.99 |
| Digital Deluxe Edition | $69.99 | $6.99 |
| Dark Arts Pack | $19.99 | $1.99 |
| Creator Kit | Free | Free |
The 90% sale was set to end on September 17, 2026 at 8:00 a.m. A $59.99 RPG that had already been free twice does not get that tag by accident. People who claimed in December or May still have the base game. Everyone else can buy it for less than a movie ticket, or wait for the next time Epic needs a Potter headline.
The Game Awards box did what it was built to do. It filled Epic libraries, moved a Chocolate Frog into Fortnite lockers, and told the paid PC market the wait was over.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do You Keep Hogwarts Legacy After an Epic Giveaway Ends?
Yes. A copy claimed during either free window stays in that Epic account for good, even if you never finish the install. The store’s Creator Kit is listed as free on its own, separate from those timed grants, so the editor tools were not the prize the December and May drops were handing out.
Was Hogwarts Legacy Free on PlayStation, Xbox, or Switch?
No. Both Epic promotions were PC licenses only. The Nintendo Switch 2 edition, which launched on June 5, 2025, stayed a paid SKU through those windows, as did the PlayStation and Xbox versions that have been on sale since 2023.
Did the 40 Million Sales Figure Include Free Epic Copies?
Warner Bros. Games described the 40 million as units sold on consoles and PC. Epic’s free grants are licenses added to an account at $0, so they sit outside that paid tally the same way Game Pass or PlayStation Plus access does. The December 17 announcement and the giveaway overlapped on the calendar. They were not the same pile of copies.
What Did You Need for the Chocolate Frog Back Bling?
Play two hours of the Epic PC build on the same account you use for Fortnite, with playtime logged by December 18, 2025 at 11 a.m. ET. Epic’s help page said the back bling could take 24 to 48 hours to land in the locker after that playtime was confirmed, so a last-morning session did not pop the item on the spot.
How Large Is the PC Install?
The Epic store lists 85 GB of storage, Windows 10, and a minimum CPU of an Intel Core i5-8400 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600, with 16 GB of memory and a GeForce GTX 1070 or Radeon RX Vega 56. The two-hour Fortnite chore was a full client download, not a lightweight companion app.
