PlayStation Collects Most GTA 6 Pre-Orders After Netflix
GTA 6 pre-orders reached 4.86 million after Netflix, but PlayStation took 77% of them and 89% of buyers paid $100.
GTA 6 pre-orders sit at about 4.86 million after a Netflix gameplay dump, and PlayStation still holds roughly 77% of that pile. Sensor Tower’s Aug. 31 weekly pass put the one-day jump on Aug. 27 at 436% versus the day before, then 572% across two days versus the prior 30-day average.
The split is the part that lasts. Rockstar shot the 26-minute tape on a standard PS5, and PlayStation daily orders leapt 606% that Thursday while Xbox moved 127%.
PlayStation Jumped 606% on Netflix Day
Those percentages describe a daily run-rate, not the whole stack multiplying by five. Sensor Tower already had about 4.55 million reservations on the books before the special aired, so the weekend added hundreds of thousands of units, not millions. Abe Yousef, a senior insights analyst at the firm, built the update from its panel and models. Take-Two still has not published an official count.
THE NETFLIX-DAY SPLIT
| Platform | Share of tracked pre-orders | Aug. 27 daily jump | Mid-August units |
|---|---|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 | about 77% | 606% | about 3.38 million |
| Xbox Series X|S | about 23% | 127% | about 1 million |
| Combined | 100% | 436% vs prior day | 4.38 million through Aug. 18 |
Through Aug. 18 the same model had 4.38 million copies and about $429 million in net revenue, with PlayStation at $331 million and Xbox at $98 million. The live GTA VI sales tracker is updated weekly, and the Aug. 31 pass is the one that lands at 4.86 million. Public posts on Sept. 1 were still rounding the pile to the mid-4 millions, which matches a weekly product more than a live cash register.
Xbox still cleared a million reservations in the quiet stretch of summer, so this is not a shutout. It is a tide that rose much faster on one store than the other, on the day Rockstar finally showed people playing the thing.
The Tape Came Off a Standard PS5
Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look premiered on Netflix at 3 p.m. ET on Thursday, Aug. 27, then went free on Rockstar’s YouTube channel and the GTA VI site at 9 p.m. The company had not released official gameplay since Trailer 2 in May 2025. Netflix kept the first window for six hours. The closing card said the footage was captured on a standard PS5, and Rockstar’s storefront still tells buyers the game Plays Best On PlayStation 5.
That is a product choice with a receipt. The special is in-game footage of Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos in Leonida, with no host and almost no on-screen tutorial. It ends by restating the Nov. 19, 2026 release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
WHAT THE 26-MINUTE TAPE SHOWED
- The open: A drug deal goes bad, then a shootout that looks like a slow-motion aim mode with glowing weak points.
- The couple: Jason pulls food from Lucia’s fridge; later they hold hands on the way to a rooftop bar, and missions can be run together or apart.
- The swap: Players can switch characters mid-job, including from the driver’s seat to the passenger with a gun.
- The sandbox: Scuba, kayaks, airboats, basketball, weights, street races, a parachute off a tower, and a chihuahua in a purple tutu.
- The world: Shopkeepers shoot back, clothes show up on cameras, and a dog can be petted until an angel icon ticks on the HUD.
People who wanted a systems lecture did not get one. They got Vice City at street level, on the SKU Rockstar used as the capture deck. A six-hour Netflix lock annoyed anyone without a login, and it also put the first official play footage in living rooms that do not watch gaming YouTube. Sensor Tower saw Netflix’s iOS app climb as high as 35th on the U.S. App Store, up 61 places in a day, and the special reached the top of the service’s movies list.
Why 89% of Buyers Pay $100
The other quiet number in the tracker is the cart. Karl Kontus, who runs Sensor Tower’s video game insights unit, said 89% of tracked pre-orders are the $100 Ultimate Edition rather than the $80 standard, including 90% on Xbox and 88.5% on PlayStation. Typical premium shares during pre-orders, he said, sit around 10 to 20%, and a 50% mix would already be a strong result. He also said he had never seen a 90% premium share before.
THE $100 CART
- Sticker prices: Take-Two set the standard edition at $79.99 and Ultimate at $99.99 when reservations opened on June 25.
- What $20 buys: Ultimate adds premium vehicles, weapons, apparel, and access to One-Eyed Willie’s Mod Shop. Both editions launch on Nov. 19, so the extra money is not buying early access.
- Blended ticket: At an 89% Ultimate mix the average paid price sits near $98, which is why mid-August revenue could already clear $429 million on 4.38 million units.
- The fade risk: Kontus expects more casual buyers to pull the mix toward 50/50 as the last marketing wave hits, and he still called even that outcome well above the industry norm.
Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick had already told analysts the mix was skewing to the premium edition. The $80 base itself is a fight Take-Two is willing to have; management has called that price phenomenal value. The early queue is not the bargain hunters. It is people paying up for cosmetics and a branded garage on a game they cannot refund for a used disc, because the physical SKU is a download code in a box.
Sony Has Logged More Than 95 Million PS5 Sales
PlayStation’s 77% slice of GTA 6 pre-orders looks wild until you put hardware next to it, and then it looks slightly rich rather than impossible. Sony Interactive Entertainment lists more than 95 million PS5 consoles sold through June 30, 2026, and 125 million monthly active PlayStation users. Independent tallies put Xbox Series X|S around 35 million, since Microsoft stopped publishing a lifetime figure. On those numbers PlayStation is about three-quarters of the combined base, and GTA 6’s tracked mix is 77/23.
The Netflix day did not follow that ratio. A 606% PlayStation jump against a 127% Xbox jump is a marketing event landing on the platform that filmed it. Rockstar did not need a timed exclusive. A capture deck, a “plays best on” line, and a Thursday-night living-room window did the same job for the people who had been waiting since June to see whether the $80 and $100 pages were worth tapping.
Talk of skipping the game over the missing disc also failed to show up in the PlayStation column. A code-in-a-box SKU was always going to sell like a digital one, and PlayStation’s store already ranks on revenue. GTA 6 sat at the top of regional PlayStation Store charts within days of the June 25 open, with the $100 edition in first on those lists.
A 2013 Disc Launch Set a 7 Million Bar
The comparison everyone reaches for is Grand Theft Auto V, and the unit count still favors the older game. Sensor Tower’s own recap puts GTA V’s 7 million pre-orders against 11 million copies on launch day in 2013 and 16 million in the first week. Take-Two booked about $800 million in first-day sales, before Japan and Brazil even opened. Analysts at the time translated that dollar figure to roughly 13 million to 14 million units. This August, Take-Two put GTA V’s lifetime total above 230 million copies.
GTA 6 is not on that clock. Reservations have been live since June 25, the big gameplay drop landed on Aug. 27, and the ship date is still November 19, 2026. Kontus has warned that a straight line from the current pile would spit out a nonsense 40 million pre-orders by launch, and his working range is more like 25 million, or about $2 billion, if the late rush shows up. He also noted Cyberpunk 2077’s 8 million pre-orders and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3’s 6.5 million as the rare published comps, both from a different pricing era.
THE ROAD TO NOVEMBER 19
- June 25, 2026: Digital and code-in-box pre-orders open at $79.99 and $99.99 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
- July 20, 2026: Sensor Tower’s public snapshot shows 3.15 million PlayStation units versus 0.93 million on Xbox, with combined net revenue at $395 million.
- August 7, 2026: Zelnick calls pre-order demand unprecedented on the earnings call and still withholds a unit figure.
- August 18, 2026: The tracker prints 4.38 million units, $429 million, and a 77/23 platform split, with about 89% on Ultimate.
- August 27, 2026: Netflix hosts the 26-minute extended look at 3 p.m. ET; Rockstar posts it for free at 9 p.m. Daily orders jump 436%, PlayStation 606%, Xbox 127%.
- August 31, 2026: The weekly pass lands at about 4.86 million, still short of GTA V’s 7 million pre-order mark with 11 weeks left.
The 2013 launch also ran on plastic discs at $60, with Xbox 360 leading PlayStation 3 in some U.S. pre-order tallies. Today’s pile is digital-first, $80 to $100, and filmed on a base PS5. Trailing 7 million units at this point is a real gap. It is not the same receipt.
Zelnick Will Not Call a Pre-Order a Sale
Take-Two closed its last reported quarter with $1.53 billion in revenue and reiterated fiscal 2027 net bookings of $8.0 billion to $8.2 billion, a forecast that already assumes GTA 6 lands in November. Zelnick told analysts the title had an exceptional start to pre-orders in the five days they were open inside that quarter. He still refused to attach a number, on the grounds that a figure this far from launch could mislead.
The level of preorders is unprecedented and astonishing, and we’re very grateful for that. But they are so unprecedented that we just don’t know how it’ll translate into sales. To be clear, we haven’t sold one unit yet. You can cancel a preorder.
Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two Interactive, fiscal 2027 earnings call
He also said the company’s business is well over 90% digitally distributed, which is the same fact as the code-in-box SKU. A reservation on a PlayStation account can vanish before Nov. 19. That is why the 4.86 million figure, the 77% PlayStation share, and the 89% Ultimate mix are still a queue, not a booked quarter.
What the queue already shows is who is standing in it. The first official play footage ran on Netflix, came off a standard PS5, and sent PlayStation’s daily line up five times harder than Xbox’s. Sony did not publish this game, and it is the company holding most of the paid holds with 11 weeks to go.
