Overwatch Patched Its 10th Anniversary Twice in Public

Overwatch opened its 10th anniversary on May 12, 2026, then patched the rewards twice before Season 2 ended.

Game director Aaron Keller said the complaints were fair, cut the box grind to 60 games, and still told players the rest of the year would have to finish a party the event itself could not.

Three Days In, the Director Called It Fair

The official account sold a “legendary good time”: 21 Launch Hero Skins, 15 Anniversary Loot Boxes, and community-made cosmetics, running May 12 to June 1. The midcycle post around Reign of Talon Season 2 framed the stretch as a mountain overlook, with three weeks of throwback arcade modes, a shared global progress bar, and the original Winston cinematic asking, “Are you with us?”

Players who queued that first week did not meet a mythic grant. They met weekly box tracks, original-roster recolors, and a shop that opened on the same day. Launch-hero skins sat in those limited pools. The louder objection was that a 10-year login still asked for a long match count and paid out looks many veterans already treated as palette swaps.

Keller answered on May 15, three days after the event went live.

For Weeks 2 and 3 he doubled, then tripled, the community loot boxes. He cut the total games needed for all 15 Anniversary Loot Boxes to 60, with wins counting as double. During Week 3 every player would also receive a 10 Year Anniversary Loot Box with 4 guaranteed Legendary skins. In total, he wrote, the event would guarantee 10 Legendary skins.

He agreed that rewards “broadly can be more than loot boxes.” He also said the current event was a one-off, and that an extra season-long event in Season 3, plus a richer weekly Play N Games tracker, would have to carry the year. “I understand that future rewards don’t make this specific event bigger,” he added, “but I hope it gives some context for how we’re thinking about this year as a whole.”

China Logged In to a Different Decade

The comparison that made the global haul look thin was already public before Keller posted. NetEase, which publishes Overwatch in China, ran a separate login event from May 13 that granted 10 Mythic skins, the rarest cosmetic tier in the game. Global players were grinding anniversary boxes for launch recolors while that login window sat on the other side of the publisher split.

Mythic skins are the customizable top of the ladder, the ones that normally cost Mythic Prisms on a battle-pass track. Ra Ana, the Season 2 mythic that arrived with this midcycle, still sat on that paid track. She was never part of the anniversary grant.

THE TWO ANNIVERSARY WINDOWS

Replies under the official anniversary post asked a blunt question: where were the mythics. Random legendaries for heroes a player never queued did not close that gap. Keller’s May 15 box flood added more rolls, not a mythic, and he said so in advance by promising the rest of the year instead of rebuilding this event into a China match.

Loot Boxes Came Back to Carry the Decade

That choice had a long runway. Overwatch launched on May 24, 2016, as a paid game whose cosmetic economy ran on loot boxes, one per level, with more for sale. By the time Overwatch 2 shipped in 2022, paid boxes were gone. The sequel pointed players at a battle pass and a shop. Plenty of veterans missed the old drip of free items even when they had hated the gambling layer.

Season 15: Honour and Glory put the crate back, with a hard limit. Official notes advertised Loot Boxes returning in Season 15 as something you earn by playing, including weekly challenges and battle-pass grants, not something you buy with real money. It still opened without a mythic, without gold shards, and with a match count long enough that Keller had to slash it in public three days later. What the Anniversary Put in Players’ Hands

The event still had a real pile of items once you stayed in queue. Each of the three weeks offered five Anniversary Loot Boxes from a limited pool with no duplicates. Clear all 15 and the last reward was the Legendary 10-Years Cheers Tracer skin. A shared global bar converted every match into community unlocks. Login loot marked 1, 3, 5, 7, and 10 years in the fight. Menus got new music, and the old Winston trailer ran again.

Arcade rotation was the nostalgia pitch. Classic 2016 arrived May 12, Mystery Showdown on May 19, and Classic 2020 on May 26. Those were snapshots of older rulesets, not new maps. Dev-made cosmetics numbered 22. Community creators added 11 more.

THE GLOBAL 10-YEAR HAUL

Ra Ana sat beside that list, not inside it. Level 1 unlocked the base skin and a solar combat aura. Level 2 added hairstyles and headpieces. Level 3 added purple-and-gold or pink-and-sand colorways. Level 4 added an ambient light toggle, with Gilded and Iridescent Aspects on top. That whole tree still cost Mythic Prisms.

Crazy Raccoon Closed Tokyo in Seven Maps

The other half of the midcycle was not a crate. Champions Clash, the first full-scale OWCS live event of the year, ran May 22 to May 24 in partnership with GANYMEDE and ZETA DIVISION. Official Champions Clash dates in May put eight teams from four regions on one stage at the Dome Tachikawa Tachihi in Tokyo: Twisted Minds, Virtus.pro, Crazy Raccoon, ZETA DIVISION, Dallas Fuel, Spacestation, Weibo Gaming, and All Gamers.

The Overwatch Esports desk later recapped a Grand Final that went to seven maps, the first time an Overwatch international final had gone that long since 2022. Crazy Raccoon beat Twisted Minds 4 to 3 and became the third team to lock a Midseason Championship berth. Twisted Minds had been swept in the upper semis for their first loss since the prior year. That result did more to set the 2026 hierarchy than any loot box did.

On the client, Top 500 Live Spectate went in with the same patch window. You could watch ranked games as they happened, with real players and no highlight filter, then take the pacing back into your own queue or just sit on the leaderboard. It was the one midcycle feature that taught the game instead of dressing it.

Shop Skins Stayed Off the Earnable Track

While the anniversary bar filled, the shop ran four collections in parallel. What If? and Date Night both sold May 12 to June 1. White Rabbit used the same window. Apocalypse Warriors swapped the spring palette for a darker set from May 26 to June 15.

A China-region Overwatch account later posted that the Date Night and What If? skins would not be added to loot boxes. The Title Grind Got a Second Patch in June

The original anniversary window was supposed to close June 1. On that day Keller posted again. The Table Flip title, he said, had requirements that “weren’t entirely clear.” The bar dropped from 48 challenges to 38, and the event stretched to the end of Season 2. Players who had already finished the original 48 would get a Double Table Flip title in a later patch. The change went live at 10:30 a.m. PDT on June 2. Season 2 itself ended June 16, 2026.
