Sony Leaves Yearly PlayStation Plus Frozen After the Short-Plan Hike
Sony raised monthly and quarterly PlayStation Plus on every tier on May 20, 2026, and left the 2023 US year rates untouched.
Sony raised monthly and quarterly PlayStation Plus prices on May 20, 2026, across Essential, Extra and Premium. New US Essential rates are $10.99 for one month and $27.99 for three months.
Extra and Premium each rose $2 a month. Every 12-month US plan stayed at the price Sony set in 2023, which is how a short-plan hike now steers people onto a prepaid year.
Extra and Premium Rose on the Same Day
PlayStation’s May 18 notice named only the new starting figures, $10.99, €9.99 and £7.99 for one month, and $27.99, €27.99 and £21.99 for three months. Those are Essential rates. The phrase “prices will start at” did the rest of the work.
When the store updated on May 20, Extra and Premium short plans had moved too. US Extra went from $14.99 to $16.99 a month, a 13.3 percent rise. Premium went from $17.99 to $19.99, an 11.1 percent rise. Essential’s $1 bump is 10.0 percent.
Starting May 20, PlayStation Plus prices for new customers will increase in select regions. Due to ongoing market conditions, prices will start at $10.99 USD / €9.99 EUR / £7.99 GBP for 1-month subscriptions and $27.99 USD / €27.99 EUR / £21.99 GBP for 3-month subscriptions.…

Sony still lists three PlayStation Plus membership options, and online multiplayer is part of every tier. Essential is the online-play plan with monthly games, store discounts, cloud saves and Share Play. The Game Catalog sits on Extra. Classics, game trials and cloud streaming sit on Premium.
US PLAYSTATION PLUS LIST PRICES FROM MAY 20
| Tier | 1 month | 3 months | 12 months |
|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | $9.99 to $10.99 | $24.99 to $27.99 | $79.99, unchanged |
| Extra | $14.99 to $16.99 | $39.99 to $43.99 | $134.99, unchanged |
| Premium | $17.99 to $19.99 | $49.99 to $54.99 | $159.99, unchanged |
Three-month Extra rose $4 to $43.99. Three-month Premium rose $5 to $54.99. Both of those moves are 10.0 percent. The year column is the tell. Sony did not touch it in the United States.
The Year Plans Sony Lifted in 2023
This is the inverse of the last US list-price change. In 2023 Sony raised the 12-month plans and left monthly rates alone. In 2026 it raised the short plans and left those 2023 year rates in place.
PLAYSTATION PLUS PRICE STEPS SINCE THE THREE-TIER RELAUNCH
- June 2022: PlayStation Plus relaunches as Essential, Extra and Premium. US Essential is $9.99 a month and $59.99 a year.
- September 6, 2023: Sony raises only the 12-month plans. Essential goes from $59.99 to $79.99, Extra from $99.99 to $134.99, Premium from $119.99 to $159.99.
- May 18, 2026: PlayStation says new-customer prices will rise from May 20 in select regions, citing ongoing market conditions, and lists only the new starting one-month and three-month figures.
- May 20, 2026: One-month and three-month prices go live on all three tiers. US 12-month list prices do not move.
The 2023 year-plan jump was 33.3 percent on Essential, 35.0 percent on Extra, and 33.3 percent on Premium. Those are the rates that still print on the US 12-month button. Monthly Essential had not moved since the 2022 relaunch, until May 20.
Who Still Pays the Old PlayStation Plus Rate
PlayStation wrote that the change does not apply to current subscribers unless the plan changes or lapses, with two country exceptions. That is a grandfather rule with a tripwire. Miss a renewal, switch tiers, or let the sub die, and the new rate is the one you get.
WHO KEEPS THE OLD RATE
- Rolling members outside Turkey and India: The pre-May price holds while the same plan stays active with no lapse and no change.
- New buyers in USD, euro and sterling stores: They pay $10.99, €9.99 or £7.99 for one month of Essential, and the matching new Extra and Premium short rates.
- Anyone who lapses, cancels, then returns: Resubscribing is a new purchase. The May 20 list applies.
- Turkey and India: Current members do not keep the old rate. The new price applies even if the sub never lapsed.
The protection is real until it is not. A downgrade, an upgrade, or extra time stacked on the account is a change. The people who only need Essential to play online have the least room to walk away, because PS5 online multiplayer still sits behind that paywall.
Monthly Essential Now Costs $51.89 More a Year
Pay US Essential monthly for 12 months and the bill is $131.88. The frozen year plan is $79.99, a gap of $51.89. That year rate works out to $6.67 a month.
Extra’s monthly path is $203.88 against $134.99 a year, a $68.89 gap. Premium’s monthly path is $239.88 against $159.99 a year, a $79.89 gap. Sony did not have to raise the year button to make it look like the deal. Raising the short buttons did that job.
UK Essential is now £7.99 a month, £21.99 for three months, and £59.99 a year. Euro Essential is €9.99, €27.99, and €71.99. Those year figures match the 2023 adjustment, same as in the US. Flexibility is what got more expensive.
Sony Cited Market Conditions After Network Sales Rose 13.9%
The Plus notice used “ongoing market conditions.” That line arrived 10 days after Sony Group’s results for the year ended March 31, 2026, published on May 8. Network services sales, the bucket that includes PlayStation Plus, were already up.
SONY GAME AND NETWORK SERVICES, FY2025
- Network services sales: ¥763.1 billion, up from ¥669.9 billion a year earlier, a 13.9 percent rise.
- Segment operating income: ¥463.3 billion, up 12 percent as Sony stated it.
- Segment sales: ¥4,685.7 billion, described as essentially flat, with hardware unit sales down and network sales up.
- March accounts: 125 million monthly active users, a record for that quarter’s last month.
An online-play gate is not a memory chip. DRAM costs hit consoles. They do not explain a $1 to $2 bump on a digital membership in the same way. The loudest objection to the May 18 post was that internet delivery for multiplayer did not suddenly get dearer, and the filing does not show a network business in retreat.
Hardware had already moved. Sony chose to increase PS5 prices from April 2. The disc model went to $649.99 from $549.99, the Digital Edition to $599.99 from $499.99, and the Pro to $899.99 from $749.99, a $150 step. PlayStation Portal went to $249.99 from $199.99. That April PS5 console price rise used a cousin of the same language.
With continued pressures in the global economic landscape, we’ve made the decision to increase the prices of PS5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal remote player globally.

Nintendo later lifted the Switch 2 from $449.99 to $499.99 on September 1. Console list prices went up first. The subscription layer followed in May, aimed at the people who still pay month to month.
Australia Raised the 12-Month Price Anyway
The freeze on year plans is not global. PlayStation told Australian buyers the new Essential rates start at A$14.95 for one month, A$43.95 for three months, and A$112.95 for 12 months. Existing Australian members keep the old rate unless they lapse or change the plan.
Like many companies around the world, PlayStation said, it continues to be impacted by global market conditions and has adjusted prices for new PlayStation Plus subscribers in select regions. In Australia that adjustment included the year plan, the product Sony left still on $79.99 in the United States.
A September 10 sweep of US PlayStation Store list prices still showed Essential at $10.99 a month and $79.99 a year, Extra at $16.99 and $134.99, Premium at $19.99 and $159.99. Sony has not said when the 12-month US rate will move. Until it does, the cheap door is the one it already raised in 2023, paid in a lump.
Frequently Asked Questions
How Much Is PlayStation Plus Essential in the UK and Europe?
UK Essential is £7.99 for one month, £21.99 for three months, and £59.99 for 12 months. Euro-currency Essential is €9.99, €27.99, and €71.99. UK Extra is £11.99 / £34.99 / £99.99 and Premium is £14.99 / £43.99 / £119.99. Euro Extra is €15.99 / €43.99 / €125.99 and Premium is €18.99 / €54.99 / €151.99.
What Does PlayStation Plus Essential Include?
Essential includes online multiplayer, monthly games, store discounts, exclusive add-on content, Share Play, Game Help on PS5, and 100GB of cloud storage. It does not include the Game Catalog, Ubisoft+ Classics, the Classics Catalog, game trials, or PS5 cloud streaming. From January 2026, Sony says PS4 games are added to the monthly games lineup only intermittently.
Do Existing Members Keep the Old Price If They Change Plans?
No. PlayStation’s rule protects the old rate only while the same plan stays active. An upgrade, a downgrade, stacked extra time, a lapse, or a cancel-and-return all count as a change, and the May 20 list then applies. Turkey and India never got that protection.
Is Online Multiplayer Included in Every PlayStation Plus Tier?
Yes. Online multiplayer is a core benefit on Essential, Extra and Premium. Extra adds the Game Catalog of PS4 and PS5 downloads plus Ubisoft+ Classics. Premium adds classics, trials, and cloud streaming on top of Extra. Players who only want to play with friends can stay on Essential and skip the catalogs.
What Are the New 12-Month PlayStation Plus Prices in Australia?
New Australian Essential 12-month members pay A$112.95. Extra is A$196.95 a year and Premium is A$225.95 a year on the live store grid. Those year rates moved with the short plans, which is the opposite of the US, UK and euro freeze on 12-month list prices.
