007 First Light Sold 4 Million Without a Switch Date

007 First Light sold 4 million copies after a daytime May launch, yet Switch 2 still has no date and Amazon holds any sequel.

007 First Light unlocked at 7:00 a.m. Pacific on May 26, 2026 for digital pre-orders, then went worldwide on May 27. IO Interactive self-published the James Bond origin story on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series consoles, and PC.

By August 20 the studio and Amazon MGM Studios said the game had reached 4 million copies. Nintendo Switch 2 was not in that pile. A September 9 Nintendo Direct still listed the port for 2026 and did not name a day.

May 26 Opened Early, May 27 Opened Everywhere

The head start was 24 hours, not a deluxe-only weekend. Anyone who pre-ordered digitally got into the game on May 26 and received the Deluxe extras at the standard $69.99 price, including four outfits, gadget skins, and the Agent’s Mark weapon skin.

IO Interactive built the campaign as a new Bond story rather than a film tie-in. Patrick Gibson plays a young recruit in a restarted 00 programme, with M, Q, Moneypenny, and Lenny Kravitz as the pirate king Bawma. The studio spent about seven years on it after Hitman: World of Assassination paid the bills.

Physical copies still leaked before that 24-hour window. On May 24 the official account posted the first 13 minutes of the opening mission so the leak would not be the first look. The official 007 First Light game hub now bills more than 4 million copies sold and keeps patch notes through version 1.1.1, dated August 28.

The 7 a.m. Pacific Launch That Skipped Midnight

IO Interactive set one worldwide clock and refused a midnight drop. Los Angeles opened at 7:00 a.m. PDT. New York opened at 10:00 a.m. EDT. London opened at 3:00 p.m. BST. Those daytime times that skipped midnight applied to early access on May 26 and to the public build on May 27, one calendar day apart at the same local hour.

PC players could buy on 007 First Light on Steam or the Epic Games Store. Steam hit a peak of 68,477 concurrent players around launch. Reviews on that store sat at 91 percent Very Positive in the first 24 hours, with more than 8,000 posts already in.

1.5 Million Copies in 24 Hours

On May 28 the official account said the game had sold 1.5 million copies. IO Interactive called it the fastest start in the studio’s history, faster than any Hitman launch, and pointed to an 88 OpenCritic rating and an 87 Metacritic score. Critic and player numbers sat unusually close, which is rare for a big licensed action game.

OFFICIAL SALES LADDER

Milestone Copies When IOI said it
First 24 hours 1.5 million May 28, 2026
First week 2.7 million June 6, 2026
Under two weeks 3 million June 6, 2026, CEO Hakan Abrak
First three months 4 million August 20, 2026

Alinea Analytics, looking at a 2.2 million snapshot in early June, put PlayStation 5 at 55.1 percent of copies, PC at 33.1 percent, and Xbox Series at 11.8 percent. That mix is the reverse of recent Hitman releases, where PC usually leads. On Steam, Alinea put the United States at 29 percent of players and China at 18 percent. About a third of players had also played Hitman.

The August 20 joint statement with Amazon MGM Studios put the latest total on the record as 4 million units in three months, with Switch 2 still to come.

When Does 007 First Light Come to Switch 2?

There is still no day. Nintendo’s September 9, 2026 Direct showed 007 First Light in a third-party montage and kept the window at 2026. That is the same vague hang that IO Interactive moved to on August 20, after spending the spring promising “later this summer.”

WHAT WE KNOW

  • Original plan: Switch 2 was due with PS5, Xbox, and PC on May 27, after the whole project slipped two months from March 27.
  • April 8 hold: IO Interactive pulled Switch 2 to later in the summer so the Glacier 2 build could be tuned, and said the other platforms would still ship on May 27.
  • Playable build: The studio ran a Switch 2 booth at Gamescom 2026 in Hall 9, and footage from that unit shows DLSS with a slightly soft image that still holds up in motion.
  • Japan physical: Publisher H2 Interactive withdrew its late-summer package date on August 31 and set the Japanese physical SKU to TBD.

WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED

  • A public day: An Amazon Japan listing showed September 16, then went stale after the H2 notice. IO Interactive has not adopted that date.
  • Frame-rate modes: No official docked or handheld targets are on the record. A locked 30 fps is the working guess, not a studio figure.
  • Digital versus card: Early listings pointed to a Game-Key Card for physical Switch 2 copies, which would still need a download.

IO Interactive’s prior Switch 2 port, Hitman: World of Assassination, shipped with a rough frame time and needed patches. Senior licensing producer Theuns Smit said the Bond team was seeing good progress on optimisation and wanted the quality players deserve. The Gamescom unit is the first public proof that the port exists as more than a slide.

Amazon Holds the Rights to Any Sequel

First Light was already in motion at IO Interactive before Amazon took control of the Bond rights through MGM, which is why the Danish studio could publish this one itself. Amazon MGM later said it holds the rights to any future James Bond video games and that it was too early to discuss them. Jeff Gattis, Amazon’s general manager of gaming, walked back an earlier line that sequels would be done by MGM and, in theory, Amazon Game Studios.

Let’s let the game breathe and have its day.

Gattis also said it seemed like a sequel should be made, and that IO Interactive had been a strong partner. He visited the Copenhagen office. CEO Hakan Abrak said a follow-up was “very possible” and that talks were still about First Light’s first year, not a second game. Abrak has talked in the past about growing this younger Bond across more than one title. Nothing is signed.

The money is less clean than the review scores. Around the 3 million mark at Summer Game Fest, Abrak said published $200 million cost figures mixed marketing, future bonuses, and other items with the core build, so the true outlay was lower. He still had not closed the books.

We haven’t completely recouped yet because there’s a partnership as well, and royalties. But it’s above all our dreams and expectations. It’s going to be a massive, massive record for us and by all measures it’s going to be a huge success.

Hakan Abrak, CEO, IO Interactive, Summer Game Fest 2026

IO Interactive has not said whether 4 million copies finished that recoup. In late June the studio also announced layoffs after an external partner on Project Fantasy walked away, in a note that still praised the Bond launch. The hit and the cuts arrived in the same season.

TacSim Missions, Bawma, and the Year One Plan

On June 6, the same week as the 2.7 million figure, IO Interactive posted a free Year One roadmap instead of a paid season pass. Abrak told the press that wine bottles were 36 percent of thrown items, that players had started 34 million missions, and that 30 percent of those missions were finished. On September 8 the official account posted a fresh stats graphic and a discount of up to 20 percent.

YEAR ONE BEATS ON THE RECORD

  • TacSim rotations: New challenges send players back to Kensington’s Workshop, Slovakia’s mountain roads in the Aston Martin Valhalla, Aleph’s black market in Mauritania, and The Pearl resort in Vietnam.
  • Webb Industries: Extra intel points at an unknown piece of technology that the studio is billing as a future opponent.
  • Bawma mission: After Mauritania, MI6 forms an uneasy alliance with Kravitz’s pirate king and asks Bond to handle a private job.
  • G2 glasses: Q’s next kit is Even G2 display smart glasses from Even Realities, meant to open new spy toys in those missions.
  • New Game+: The studio is exploring a New Game+ pass on the campaign, plus regular cosmetics, guns, and leaderboard jobs.

The March delay, the daytime unlock, and the 24-hour pre-order window did what they were for. The game launched stable enough that Digital Foundry-style checks found a firm 60 fps on base hardware, and the scoreboards did not split into a critic-versus-player fight. Switch 2 is the piece that plan still has not delivered. Nintendo’s September 9 show put Bond in the montage and left the calendar blank, which is where the launch times story has been sitting since May.

Ten years in journalism sit behind that, a reporter's stretch followed by an editor's, and the habits show in what he reads before he writes: the filing rather than the results announcement, the judgment rather than a summary of it, the electoral authority's own count, the safety notice as the regulator issued it, the paper with its sample size and its stated limitations, the governing body's official record, the specification sheet, the release notes. Figures get checked against whatever produced them, then checked again for the base they were calculated from.
