CZ Keeps His Super Cycle Alive Without a Date
Changpeng Zhao still backs a crypto super cycle, but the 2026 date is gone and his new wager is Bitcoin overtaking gold with no deadline.
Changpeng Zhao still talks about a crypto super cycle, but the 2026 date is gone. Bitcoin at $76,965 on September 11, per coins.xyz at 12:07 UTC, sits 38.99% below the $126,080 record printed on October 6, 2025. The Binance founder has already moved the wager to an undated gold-overtake call.
That is the trade he is making now: keep the slogan, drop the calendar, and raise the target so it cannot come due this year.
The Super Cycle Began as a 2026 Call
Zhao, known as CZ, made the original claim on January 23, 2026, at the World Economic Forum in Davos. Speaking with Aaron Ross Sorkin, he said he had “very strong feelings it will probably be a supercycle in 2026 for Bitcoin,” arguing that a friendlier U.S. stance, and copycat policy abroad, could break the old four-year boom-and-bust pattern.
He gave no price target. On a five-to-ten-year horizon, he said, the direction was easy: “We’re going to go up.” He also said he holds bitcoin and Binance’s BNB token. A presidential pardon in October 2025 had already put him back on the conference circuit after he stepped down as Binance chief executive.
The call was a calendar bet, not a mood. 2026 was the year the four-year clock was supposed to fail. By summer, that was the line interviewers read back to him.
June Turned the Forecast Into a Shrug
In a mid-June interview, with bitcoin stuck in a $60,000 to $64,000 band after a run toward $80,000, the interviewer called the tape a winter. Zhao stepped off the date. “I think even when I said it, I probably said I could not predict the future,” he said, then added, “I try to avoid prediction questions regardless.”
He did not drop the thesis. He took the year off it.
But will crypto die? Absolutely not. Crypto will continue to grow. So I think the super cycle will come. I’m not sure when it will come.
Changpeng Zhao, Binance founder, June 2026 interview
That afternoon, June 13, he posted the clip himself with a two-line caption that did more work than the interview.
Might be late…
I can't predict anything. 😂 https://t.co/Q6EjgR3VzL
— CZ 🔶 BNB (@cz_binance) June 13, 2026
“Might be late… I can’t predict anything.” The joke did the useful thing. It let him keep the super cycle as a destination and treat the missed timing as a shrug. It was the same stance he took when Bitcoin was still near $60,000, before the summer bounce.
Later that month he blamed the sour tape on money rotating into artificial intelligence, global tension, and the four-year cycle he had said 2026 might escape. The long-term industry, he said, would still grow because more transactions need financial rails. That is a growth story. It is not a 2026 price story.
THE CALL CALENDAR
- January 23, 2026: Tells a Davos audience he has very strong feelings 2026 will be a Bitcoin supercycle.
- June 13, 2026: Posts “Might be late… I can’t predict anything” on the interview clip and says the super cycle will come, date unknown.
- August 27, 2026: At Bitcoin Asia in Hong Kong, says bitcoin will become more important than gold and could surpass it, again with no date.
- September 9, 2026: Wintermute, the trading firm, publishes a cycle note showing a shallower peak-to-trough loss than 2018 or 2022, without calling the June low final.
June replies on that post treated the shrug as a sell signal, including a warning that $40,000 could come next. The slogan kept travelling anyway, including as a token name on BNB Chain, because a super cycle with no due date cannot be late twice.
Bitcoin’s Rebound Leaves the Record Untouched
The June band did not hold as a floor in the way a winter bottom is supposed to. From $63,465.95 a month before the September 11 print, bitcoin had already bounced. It had not retaken the October high, and a one-week fade from $79,808.08 showed the bounce still giving some of it back.
THE SEPTEMBER TAPE
- Seven-day move: Down 3.61% from $79,808.08.
- 30-day move: Up 21.21% from $63,465.95.
- Three-month move: Up 17.02% from $65,733.96, a window that starts after the June stall.
- Market value: $1.54 trillion, with 20.08 million coins in supply and $29.85 billion in 24-hour volume.
That rebound matters because it changes the joke. A super cycle that “might be late” at $60,000 is a different claim at $76,965. It is still not the break-the-cycle year he sketched at Davos. The record remains $126,080, and the live gap is still the 38.99% printed by coins.xyz.
Wintermute flagged the September 11 consumer-price report and the Federal Reserve meeting on September 15-16 as the next tests, with $82,000 as a breakout level and $72,000 as the line that would stall the bounce. Those are trading levels. They are not a super cycle.
Four-Year Cycle Bears Have Not Folded
The four-year pattern Zhao wanted to break is the one the tape still resembles. The April 19, 2024, halving was followed by a peak on October 6, 2025, about 535 days later, inside the 12-to-18-month window earlier cycles used. From that high to September 11 is 340 days.
Galaxy Research, in a cycle study built on a June 9 snapshot, treated the four-year rhythm as intact and put a base case bottom between $40,000 and $46,000 sometime through the fourth quarter of 2026. That map was drawn when the bounce had not yet run. It is still the cleanest published bear case against a 2026 super cycle.
Wintermute’s September note is milder and more current. The firm’s comparison is a shallower 50% cycle drawdown against 83% in the 2018 bear and 77% in 2022. At 340 days after those earlier tops, bitcoin was still down more than 75%. The 50% figure is their peak-to-trough comparison for this cycle, not the live 38.99% gap to the record.
THE CYCLE DRAWDOWNS
| Cycle | Cited max drawdown | About 340 days after the top |
|---|---|---|
| 2018 bear | 83% | Still down more than 75% |
| 2022 bear | 77% | Still down more than 75% |
| Current cycle | About 50% (Wintermute) | Live gap 38.99% below $126,080 |
Shallower losses cut both ways. They support the idea that ETFs and earlier big-fund buying have changed the shape of a bear. They do not make 2026 a super cycle. Wintermute did not call the June low final. Galaxy’s June map still has room under the tape. Zhao’s own June comments put the four-year cycle back on the list of things that hurt the year he had picked.
What Bitcoin Needs to Catch Gold
At Bitcoin Asia in Hong Kong on August 27, on a session titled “The Bitcoin Century,” Zhao raised the target again. “I think Bitcoin will, for sure, become more important than gold,” he said. He also said bitcoin would surpass gold “pretty soon,” and that if nations treat it as a strategic reserve, it would “certainly” matter more than gold. He gave no year.
He described the gap as roughly tenfold. The tape is wider than that remark. MacroMicro’s September 10 compilation put the gold stock near $30.86 trillion against bitcoin’s $1,537.50 billion, about 20 times. Matching that full stock at 20.08 million coins implies about $1.54 million per bitcoin.
THE GOLD PARITY MATH
- His gap: Zhao called gold roughly ten times bitcoin, a line that only works on a narrower, investable slice of the metal.
- The compilation: Above-ground gold at $30,862 billion versus bitcoin at $1,537.50 billion is about 20 times, dated September 10.
- The implied price: $30.862 trillion divided by 20.08 million coins is about $1.54 million a coin, not a 2026 print.
He has also said bitcoin could eventually reach $1 million, without tying that figure to the next bull run. Gold parity at the full-stock number sits even higher. Either way, the new claim is built so 2026 cannot mark it wrong.
A Larger Claim With No Expiry Date
The sequence is now the story. In January the super cycle had a year. In June it had a shrug and a promise that crypto would not die. In August it had gold, nations, and “pretty soon,” which is not a date. Each step is larger. Each step is harder to score before the year ends.
A bounce from the June $60,000 to $64,000 band to $76,965 is a real move, and a 21.21% 30-day gain is not a dead market. It is also not the cycle-breaking year sold at Davos. Cycle desks still have maps that treat 2026 as a markdown year. Zhao has a slogan that no longer has to clear this calendar.
The original 2026 super cycle was a date. The version that remains is a growth claim with no due date, and a gold target more than a million dollars above the tape. $76,965 does not settle either one.
