Cable Gateways Push Wi-Fi 7 Past Early Adopters in the US
Ookla data shows Wi-Fi 7 quadrupling to 7.2% of US samples as cable ISPs scale gateways and 6 GHz traffic jumps 62%, lifting median uploads threefold.
U.S. Wi-Fi 7 traffic quadrupled between early 2025 and early 2026, reaching 7.2% of all Wi-Fi Speedtest samples according to Ookla. Charter’s Spectrum now owns nearly a quarter of those samples, the largest single share anywhere in the world.
The jump is not mainly from enthusiasts buying flagship mesh kits. Internet providers are shipping Wi-Fi 7 gateways with broadband plans, hardware prices have fallen sharply, and the 6 GHz band is finally common on both ends of the link. The result shows up first in upstream speeds and everyday capacity.
Fourfold Jump Leaves Most Homes Still on Older Wi-Fi
Ookla’s Speedtest Intelligence data put national Wi-Fi 7 adoption at 7.2% in Q1 2026. That figure sat at 1.8% in Q1 2025 and below 1% through most of 2024 after the standard’s commercial launch. The Wi-Fi 7 share hit 7.2 percent marks a clean fourfold rise in twelve months.
The climb followed a clear sequence rather than a sudden leap. Commercial gear appeared, ISP rollouts began, then client devices caught up enough for the sample share to compound.

Fiber providers lead by penetration inside their own bases. CenturyLink (now under AT&T conversion) reached 14.7%. Frontier Fiber hit 14.3%. Ziply Fiber and MetroNet both cleared 13%. Those operators are moving their customers from early-adopter status into early majority.

Cable’s lower internal percentages still produce the largest absolute volumes because of far bigger customer bases. Spectrum alone is the world’s top Wi-Fi 7 network by sample count. Five of the global top ten providers by volume are American.
Even at 7.2%, more than nine in ten U.S. Wi-Fi connections still run older generations. The fourfold jump therefore describes a fast-moving minority, not a finished transition. That gap between growth rate and absolute share is what keeps the story open for the next several quarters.
Cable Owns the Volume, Fiber Sets the Pace
Ookla frames the split cleanly: fiber drives penetration, cable drives scale. Spectrum’s 6.6% of its own base still equals one in four of every U.S. Wi-Fi 7 test. Xfinity holds 12.4% of the national Wi-Fi 7 pool. The long tail of hundreds of smaller ISPs averages just 0.03% each yet totals 24% together.

Charter’s pending Cox combination will add more absolute users but will dilute the combined entity’s internal percentage, since Cox sat at only 4.5% Wi-Fi 7 in the same quarter.
The math is straightforward. A cable operator with a vast base can post a modest internal share and still dominate national sample counts. A fiber operator can post double-digit internal penetration and still trail in absolute volume. Both patterns appear side by side in the same quarter, which is why Ookla’s framing separates pace from scale rather than crowning a single winner.
Smaller ISPs illustrate the other side of the same coin. Hundreds of them average just 0.03% each, yet together they still account for roughly a quarter of all U.S. Wi-Fi 7 samples. Volume is therefore concentrated at the top and fragmented at the bottom at the same time.
Gateways and Sub-$100 Routers Changed the Math
ISP-supplied equipment, not retail enthusiasts, is the main growth engine. Cable companies in particular are bundling Wi-Fi 7 gateways into higher broadband tiers. Spectrum’s Advanced Wi-Fi 7 units and Xfinity’s corresponding boxes reach millions of homes without requiring a separate purchase decision.
That bundling removes the classic upgrade friction. Households do not need to research chipsets, compare mesh kits, or schedule a separate install. The new radio arrives with the plan, so the sample share rises with ordinary churn and tier migrations rather than with enthusiast demand alone.
Retail pricing collapsed at the same time. Dual-band Wi-Fi 7 models from TP-Link now sell near or under $100. Solid tri-band options with full 6 GHz support land under $200. Brands named in coverage include Tenda, TP-Link Archer BE series, and Asus. That floor lets households that keep their own gear upgrade without waiting for the next ISP truck roll.
Client devices caught up too. Most recent iPhone models (except the lowest-cost variants), Google Pixel lines since the 8 series, recent Samsung Galaxy flagships, and an expanding set of Windows and Mac laptops now ship with Wi-Fi 7 radios. Both ends of the link finally support the standard at volume.
When gateways, retail routers, and client radios all move together, the measured share can rise quickly even if any single category still looks early. The 7.2% national figure reflects that alignment more than any one product launch.
6 GHz Traffic Climbs as Medians Keep Rising
Wi-Fi 7 and Wi-Fi 6E together pushed unlicensed 6 GHz usage up 62% year-over-year. The band now accounts for 13.8% of all U.S. Wi-Fi Speedtest samples. Older 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz shares continue to decline.
Across every fixed provider and every Wi-Fi generation, median download speed reached 316.3 Mbps in Q1 2026, a 76% gain since Q1 2022. Median upload tripled to 68.3 Mbps over the same four-year window. Cable’s mid-split and high-split DOCSIS upgrades supplied most of the upstream lift; fiber already offered more symmetric service.

Generation-to-generation speed deltas inside each provider stayed relatively stable. The national averages rose mainly because the mix of routers and clients shifted toward newer generations. Even a move from Wi-Fi 5 or early Wi-Fi 6 to Wi-Fi 6E often produces a noticeable real-world jump.
That mix effect matters for how the numbers should be read. Providers did not need dramatic per-generation leaps inside a fixed cohort. They needed enough homes to step from older radios onto 6E and Wi-Fi 7 for the national median to keep climbing. The 6 GHz share at 13.8% shows that step is already visible in the sample pool.
FCC Rules Leave Wi-Fi 7 Largely Untouched
In March 2026 the FCC expanded its Covered List to foreign-produced consumer routers, citing security risks from recent cyber campaigns. A conditional-approval process quickly narrowed the practical effect to Chinese brands that could not meet the new conditions.
Chinese vendors (led by TP-Link) still held roughly 16% of overall U.S. router sample volume across all bands and generations. They supplied almost none of the 6 GHz-capable Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 hardware in the data set. Most ISP-leased gateways come from Sagemcom, CommScope, Arris, Askey and similar non-Chinese suppliers. The top router vendors by Speedtest share therefore face little disruption on the newest standards. Older Wi-Fi 5 inventory is more exposed, which may actually nudge replacements toward compliant newer gear.
The practical split is easy to summarize from the same data:
- ISP-leased Wi-Fi 7 gateways already rely on non-Chinese suppliers such as Sagemcom, CommScope, Arris, and Askey
- Chinese brands hold about 16% of overall router sample volume yet almost none of the 6 GHz-capable 6E and Wi-Fi 7 pool
- Older Wi-Fi 5 inventory faces more exposure under the expanded Covered List
- Replacement pressure on that older stock can accelerate moves toward compliant newer gear
In short, the rules land hardest where the growth is slowest and lightest where the growth is fastest. Wi-Fi 7’s trajectory in the Speedtest sample set does not depend on the vendors most affected by the March 2026 action.
Uploads and Latency Now Shape the Competitive Edge
Xfinity’s Wi-Fi 7 median upload rose from roughly 41 Mbps in Q1 2025 to 108.8 Mbps a year later. The Xfinity median Wi-Fi 7 upload more than doubled, a concrete payoff from the combination of spectrum splits and new in-home radios. That gain helps cable differentiate from fixed-wireless access services whose uplink remains constrained.
For AI network readiness, latency may be a vulnerable spot for cable companies when it comes to AR and multimodal AI, which work best quicker than 20 ms latency. Fiber is ~10 ms quicker than cable.
Kerry Baker of Ookla noted the latency gap in the same report. Upload capacity and consistent low latency matter more for emerging AI workloads, multi-user video, and cloud collaboration than peak download marketing numbers. Cable still trails fiber on the latency side of that equation, but the upload improvement narrows one traditional weakness.
On the ground, the same pattern appears in user complaints. Households often discover the ISP modem already delivers full plan speeds while the old gateway chokes multi-room coverage. A new Wi-Fi 7 unit, whether leased or bought, routinely multiplies measured speeds in distant rooms without any change to the monthly plan. The current ISP rollout is solving that exact bottleneck at population scale.
The competitive reading is therefore split. Cable closed a visible gap on upload medians inside the Wi-Fi 7 cohort, which matters against fixed wireless and against older cable plant. Fiber keeps the latency edge that Baker flagged for AR and multimodal AI. Both facts can be true in the same market without canceling each other out.
Why the National Medians Keep Climbing
National speed medians rose even though generation-to-generation deltas inside each provider stayed relatively stable. The driver was composition. As more samples moved from Wi-Fi 5 and early Wi-Fi 6 onto Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7, the blended average climbed without any single cohort needing a dramatic internal leap.
Several existing threads point the same way. Cable mid-split and high-split DOCSIS work lifted upstream capacity on the wire. ISP gateways put newer radios into millions of living rooms. Retail prices near or under $100 widened the path for households that supply their own routers. Client devices on recent iPhone, Pixel, Galaxy, Windows, and Mac lines closed the other end of the link.
None of those pieces alone explains a fourfold Wi-Fi 7 jump or a tripling of median upload since Q1 2022. Together they shift the mix fast enough for the national numbers to move. The 13.8% 6 GHz share is another view of the same transition: spectrum that barely registered a few years ago now appears in a meaningful slice of everyday tests.
Providers that treat Wi-Fi 7 gateways as standard equipment therefore influence more than their own internal penetration charts. They change the weight of newer generations inside the national sample, which is what lifts the medians that every operator is measured against.
Homes Feel the Capacity Change First
The headline adoption rate still looks early at 7.2%. Day-to-day experience inside upgraded homes can shift sooner than that figure suggests. Multi-room coverage, upstream headroom, and 6 GHz breathing room show up in ordinary use long before a market crosses majority adoption.
That is the pattern already visible in the complaint cycle. The plan speed arrives intact at the modem, yet the old gateway fails to carry it cleanly through walls and across simultaneous streams. Swapping in a Wi-Fi 7 unit, leased or purchased, multiplies measured speeds in distant rooms with no change to the monthly tier. ISP rollouts are now applying that fix at population scale rather than one enthusiast install at a time.
Upload and latency shape how that fix is judged. Xfinity’s Wi-Fi 7 median upload more than doubling to 108.8 Mbps gives cable a clearer answer to fixed-wireless limits on the uplink. Fiber’s roughly 10 ms latency advantage remains the open variable for workloads that need consistently quick response. Households running cloud collaboration, multi-user video, or emerging AI features feel those differences directly.
Wi-Fi 7 remains early. More than nine in ten U.S. Wi-Fi connections still run older generations. Yet the trajectory is set by the largest providers treating the new gateways as standard equipment, by 6 GHz devices reaching mainstream phones and laptops, and by retail prices that no longer scare off ordinary households. The payoff is already visible in the upload and capacity numbers that determine how homes actually feel day to day.
