Apple AirPods Max 2 Launched With H2 Chip and Better ANC
Apple just dropped a surprise nobody saw coming. In a surprise launch on Monday, Apple unveiled the AirPods Max 2, the long-awaited successor to its premium headphones that launched in 2020.1 Powered by H2, features like Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, Voice Isolation, and Live Translation come to AirPods Max for the first time.2 Here is everything that changed, what stayed the same, and whether the $549 price tag still makes sense.
What Is New Inside the AirPods Max 2
The biggest change lives under the hood.
The hallmark new feature is the H2 chip that has long been part of AirPods Pro and AirPods 4. H2, combined with a new high dynamic range amplifier, enables improved audio quality on AirPods Max 2.3
H2 is a major upgrade over the H1 found in the previous AirPods Max. That’s because in addition to boosting ANC, it also enables a host of new features that AirPods Max and its H1 chip never supported.3
Eric Treski, Apple’s director of Audio Product Marketing, said the H2 delivers “up to 1.5x more effective ANC for the ultimate all-day listening experience.”2
Thanks to H2 and new computational audio algorithms, AirPods Max 2 deliver ANC that’s up to 1.5x more effective than the previous generation. This reduces even more noise, like airplane engines or commuter trains, so users can fully immerse themselves in music, work, or phone calls.2
For wireless connectivity, AirPods Max 2 support Bluetooth 5.3, whereas the previous AirPods Max support Bluetooth 5.0.4 That is a meaningful jump for latency and connection stability.
Here is a quick look at the key spec changes:
| Feature | AirPods Max (2020/2024) | AirPods Max 2 (2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Chip | H1 | H2 |
| Bluetooth | 5.0 | 5.3 |
| ANC Improvement | Baseline | Up to 1.5x better |
| Adaptive Audio | No | Yes |
| Live Translation | No | Yes |
| Voice Isolation | No | Yes |
| Camera Remote | No | Yes |
| Battery Life | Up to 20 hours | Up to 20 hours |
| Price | $549 | $549 |

Smart Features That Finally Catch Up to AirPods Pro
For years, AirPods Max owners watched from the sidelines as AirPods Pro users enjoyed smarter features. That gap is now closed.
The Adaptive Audio feature lets the headphones automatically adjust the levels of ANC and Transparency based on the user’s surroundings to optimize the listening experience.1
Conversation Awareness helps lower content volume and reduce background noise when a user starts speaking to someone nearby.4 This means you no longer need to remove your headphones every time someone walks up to talk.
Live Translation comes to the AirPods Max 2 as well, a feature that uses your AirPods and iPhone to translate incoming speech to and from the language of your choosing.5
The company says Transparency mode is now more natural, thanks to a new digital signal-processing algorithm optimized for the H2 chip and the AirPods Max microphone array.1
You can also now nod or shake your head to respond to Siri when calls or notifications come in. It is a small touch, but a surprisingly handy one.
A New Tool for Creators and Podcasters
Apple is clearly eyeing a new audience with the AirPods Max 2.
The new AirPods Max also unlock creative possibilities for podcasters, musicians, and content creators, with useful features like studio-quality audio recording and camera remote.2
A new Camera Remote feature allows users to press the Digital Crown on the AirPods Max 2 to take a photo and start or stop video recording while using Apple’s Camera app or compatible third-party camera apps on an iPhone or iPad.4
Apple says the headphones’ mic allows interviewers, podcasters, singers, and other creators to capture content with higher-quality audio and more natural vocal texture.1
For music producers, there is more good news. The Max 2 now support 24-bit, 48kHz lossless audio and ultra-low-latency audio over the included USB-C cable. That will matter far more to musicians, editors, and other creators, especially as Apple says the headphones can be used to create and mix in Personalized Spatial Audio with head tracking.6
What Apple Did Not Change
Not everything got an upgrade, and critics are not holding back.
MacRumors says that the AirPods Max 2 retain the same aluminum ear cups, stainless steel headband frame, telescoping arms and knit mesh canopy introduced in 2020. Its weight, 13.6 ounces, is unchanged, as is the battery life of up to 20 hours with ANC enabled.7
The Smart Case, which covers the ear cups while leaving the headband exposed and has drawn sustained criticism for providing limited protection and lacking a dedicated power button, has not been updated.7
They weigh exactly the same and they don’t fold up for easier storage.8 That remains a real problem for anyone who travels often with a packed bag.
Tom’s Guide notes the AirPods Max 2 do not include a heart rate monitor, a feature Apple added in the AirPods Pro 3.7 If you were hoping for health tracking on the over-ear model, you will have to keep waiting.
The current 20-hour battery life is a weak number in 2026 for a premium model, especially next to Sony’s 37 hours and the Sennheiser Momentum 4’s 56-hour battery life.9 Apple did not close that gap at all.
Key takeaway: The AirPods Max 2 are a chip swap, not a redesign. If the old design bothered you, this update will not change your mind.
Price, Colors, and Pre-Order Details
In the U.S., AirPods Max 2 have the same $549 price as the previous AirPods Max, which Apple is no longer selling.4
AirPods Max 2 will be available to order on Apple.com and in the Apple Store app starting Wednesday, March 25 in the U.S. and more than 30 other countries, and they launch on an unspecified day in early April.4
Available colors include midnight, starlight, orange, purple, and blue.
In the UK, AirPods Max 2 cost £499, and in Canada they cost $799.10
If you buy some new Max 2s you can also add in optional AppleCare+ protection, but they do come with a three month trial of Apple Music.11
Who should upgrade?
- Original Lightning AirPods Max owners: This is the most logical upgrade. AppleInsider notes that original Lightning-model owners have the most to gain given the age of their hardware.7
- 2024 USB-C AirPods Max owners: The case is weaker here. MacRumors published a 25-point comparison finding the improvements less urgent for those satisfied with their current sound and ANC performance.7
- Frequent travelers and commuters: For current owners, the case for upgrading appears strongest for frequent travelers, listeners in noisy environments and users interested in Live Translation.7
Despite the high price, the first AirPods Max did sound exceptional. They’ve just been hard to recommend for years because of the aging feature set and cost.5 The AirPods Max 2 finally fix the feature set, even if the price and design stay exactly where they were. For fans who have waited over five years for a true internal upgrade, this feels like both a relief and a slight letdown. The outside has not changed, but the brains inside are completely different.
