ChatGPT Drops Instant Checkout, Becomes Your AI Shopping Assistant
OpenAI just made the biggest shift in its e-commerce strategy since launching shopping features last year. ChatGPT is no longer trying to sell you stuff directly. Instead, it wants to help you figure out exactly what to buy, and then let your favorite store handle the rest.
1 OpenAI is rolling out a new shopping experience within ChatGPT to make it easier for users to find and compare products, after its Instant Checkout feature failed to take off. The update turns the chatbot into a full-blown visual shopping assistant with image search, side-by-side comparisons, and deep retail partnerships that could change how millions of people shop online.
Why OpenAI Killed Instant Checkout
The story behind this pivot tells us a lot about the growing pains of AI shopping.
25 The company launched Instant Checkout in September last year as its first attempt to make ChatGPT a complete e-commerce destination. The idea was simple. Ask ChatGPT for a product, pick what you like, and buy it without ever leaving the chat window. 27 Etsy, Walmart, Shopify, and PayPal all jumped on board.
But it did not work out as planned. 1Analysts previously told CNBC that OpenAI underestimated how difficult the enablement of transactions would be. It struggled to onboard merchants, show accurate data about products, and introduce multi-item carts or connect loyalty memberships.
The numbers were brutal. 22Walmart, one of the key partners, stepped back after internal data showed purchases made through ChatGPT were roughly three times lower than those on its own website. 25Only around 12 merchants ever went live, and users tended to prefer completing purchases on familiar retail sites where they had saved accounts and payment methods.
1 OpenAI acknowledged the failure in a blog post: “We’ve found that the initial version of Instant Checkout did not offer the level of flexibility that we aspire to provide.”

What the New Visual Shopping Experience Looks Like
The revamped ChatGPT shopping experience is built around one core idea: discovery, not transactions.

Here is what you can now do inside ChatGPT:
- Upload a photo of a product you love and find similar items instantly
- Compare products side by side with price, features, and reviews all in one view
- Set your budget and preferences and let the AI narrow down the best options
- Get personalized suggestions based on your past conversations and ChatGPT memory
1 “Under the hood, we’ve improved speed, relevance and product coverage, so results are more up-to-date and more useful,” OpenAI said. 3 The shopping feature is powered by a version of GPT-5 mini trained with reinforcement learning specifically for shopping tasks. OpenAI trained it to read trusted sites, cite reliable sources, and synthesize information across many sources. 37 Internal testing showed shopping research to have an accuracy rating of 64% in its domain, compared to 56% for GPT-5-Thinking and 37% for ChatGPT Search. 8 For high consideration purchases such as electronics, users are shown structured outputs with comparison tables, detailed specifications, and reviews. For lower consideration categories like beauty or fashion, the experience becomes more visual and exploratory.
Walmart, Target, and Sephora Go All In
The retail partnerships powering this new experience are massive.
25 Seven major retailers are now live via the Agentic Commerce Protocol: Target, Sephora, Nordstrom, Lowe’s, Best Buy, The Home Depot, and Wayfair. 17 Shopify merchants are automatically included through the existing Shopify Catalog, requiring no additional action from individual sellers.
Walmart is taking things even further. 5Walmart is launching a dedicated in-ChatGPT app that supports account linking, loyalty programs, and Walmart payments.
Daniel Danker, Walmart’s EVP of AI acceleration, product and design, shared his perspective on the partnership. 2“Today’s launch brings Walmart directly into the ChatGPT experience, combining leading conversational AI with the decades of retail expertise we’ve built serving consumers,” Danker said.
8 Sephora users will soon be able to ask for beauty advice directly in the platform and receive personalized recommendations. By linking their loyalty account, customers can unlock tailored suggestions alongside real benefits such as samples, free shipping, and rewards.
Meanwhile, 28Shopify is enabling millions of merchants to sell to ChatGPT users via Agentic Storefronts, giving out-of-the-box access to major AI channels including ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, AI Mode in Google Search, and the Gemini app.
| Retailer | Integration Type | Key Features |
|---|---|---|
| Walmart | Dedicated ChatGPT App | Account linking, loyalty, Walmart payments |
| Target | ACP Discovery + App | Product browsing, multi-item carts |
| Sephora | ACP Discovery | Beauty advice, loyalty rewards |
| Best Buy | ACP Discovery | Electronics comparisons, specs |
| Shopify Merchants | Agentic Storefronts | Auto-enrolled, in-app browser checkout |
How AI Is Reshaping Online Shopping in 2026
This is not just an OpenAI story. It is a signal of where the entire e-commerce industry is heading.
24 With 64% of consumers now using AI tools for product research rather than completing transactions, according to eMarketer, the data is clear. Shoppers want help deciding. They want someone, or something, to cut through the noise. 29 AI-driven traffic to Shopify stores has increased 7x since January 2025, and AI-attributed orders are up 11x over the same period. Those are staggering growth numbers that show the shift is already happening at scale.
Google is not sitting still either. 13Google launched the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), a new open standard for agentic commerce that works across the entire shopping journey. 4Google also released updates to its shopping agent platform that enable its systems to load real-time product data, preventing out-of-stocks and pricing errors. It also lets users add multiple items to their carts and connect loyalty memberships.
Key Insight for Shoppers: ChatGPT’s product recommendations are organic and unsponsored. The AI ranks products based on relevance to your specific request, not because a brand paid for placement. That could change over time, but for now, what you see is genuinely what the AI thinks is best for you.
Who Benefits and Who Falls Behind
9 The updates are rolling out this week to all ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, and Pro users. That means hundreds of millions of people now have access to this shopping assistant at no extra cost.
For shoppers, the benefits are clear. No more drowning in browser tabs. No more reading five “Top 10” listicles just to buy a vacuum cleaner. You tell ChatGPT what you need, set your limits, and get a curated shortlist in minutes.
For retailers, the stakes are higher. 39Products exclusively sold on Amazon become invisible to ChatGPT Shopping Research. During testing, when users asked for specific Amazon products, ChatGPT suggested they “manually check if they’re available on Amazon.” Amazon has blocked all OpenAI crawlers from accessing its site, creating a blind spot in the world’s largest online marketplace.
33 Small DTC brands with excellent product data can compete with large retailers. Rankings are purely organic, meaning a niche brand with well-structured, detailed product information can outrank a Fortune 500 retailer with lazy catalog data. That is a huge opportunity for independent sellers.
The way we shop online is changing faster than most people realize. OpenAI’s decision to step back from checkout and double down on discovery is not a retreat. It is a smart recalibration that puts shoppers first. Whether you are looking for a birthday gift for your niece or comparing laptops for work, ChatGPT now wants to be the friend who has already done all the homework for you. The real question is whether you will trust an AI to help you spend your money. Drop your thoughts in the comments below, and let us know if you have tried ChatGPT shopping yet.
