MSCA Partnerships Quietly Rebuild Europe’s Industry Talent Pipeline

MSCA research partnerships now pull in over 4,300 businesses and nearly one patent per top project, locking industry into Europe’s long-term talent networks.

Under Horizon Europe more than 4,300 businesses, including over 2,200 SMEs, have joined Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions projects. Some industry-focused Doctoral Networks now generate nearly one patent each. That is the surface story as the programme marks 30 years of MSCA support for researchers.

The deeper shift sits one layer down. Cross-sector training is rewriting how Europe produces researchers who can move straight into private labs, startups and long-term industrial partnerships.

The Numbers Behind Three Decades

Since 1996 the MSCA has supported over 150,000 researchers through doctoral networks, postdoctoral fellowships and staff exchanges. Twenty-three Nobel Prize winners appear among past participants. Under the current Horizon Europe cycle (2021-2027) the non-academic sector already accounts for almost half of all participating organisations.

Between 2021 and 2023 nearly two in five participants in Doctoral Networks were private-sector organisations. The pattern is structural, not a temporary spike.

These counts come from European Commission and REA tallies released around the anniversary. They show industrial partners are no longer guests; they sit inside the core delivery model.

How Doctoral Networks Put Companies Inside the Lab

MSCA Doctoral Networks form international consortia that recruit and train PhD candidates on joint research projects. Universities, research organisations and businesses design the work together. Candidates gain transferable skills while the companies gain early access to specialised methods and talent.

Three formats run in parallel.

  • Standard Doctoral Networks that still require multi-country, multi-sector partnerships
  • Industrial Doctorates in which candidates spend at least 50 percent of their time outside academia under joint academic-industry supervision
  • Joint Doctorates that award a single or multiple degree across the partner institutions

Consortia must include at least three independent legal entities from different EU Member States or associated countries, with at least one in an EU Member State. Extra partners from anywhere in the world can join. Funding covers living and mobility allowances plus research, training and management costs for up to four years (five for some joint programmes). Each beneficiary recruits at least one candidate. The MSCA Doctoral Networks consortia rules make non-academic participation both possible and, in the industrial track, mandatory in time share.

One concrete case is the SERENADE project coordinated by the Spanish division of BSH Appliances. Seven doctoral candidates from Belgium, Germany and Italy split time between universities and industry partners. They are building sensor-based containers and AI tools that monitor food freshness, aiming to cut household waste. The company helps set the research questions; the researchers bring advanced methods the firm could not staff alone.

Patents and the Commercialisation Signal

A recent look at selected industry-focused MSCA Doctoral Networks found that some highly innovative projects generated almost one patent each. That ratio sits far above typical academic outputs and points to deliberate knowledge transfer rather than accidental spin-off.

An earlier REA analysis of Horizon 2020 Innovative Training Networks (the predecessor scheme) examined 550 projects funded 2014-2017. Using patents and Innovation Radar scores it flagged 118 as high-innovation. Industry beneficiaries, especially those acting as coordinators, and Industrial Doctorate formats appeared more often among the strongest performers. Domains such as pharmacology, nanoscience and physics produced more patentable results. The pattern held: non-academic partners raise the commercialisation odds.

The same networks also deliver softer innovation. Surveys of supervisors show eight in ten say their project would not have existed without MSCA funding. Fellows report stronger interdisciplinary mobility (seven in ten) and better preparation for jobs beyond the university.

From Fellowship to Founder

The programme’s cross-sector habits have fed a visible entrepreneurship pipeline. Three MSCA alumni have won the European Prize for Women Innovators.

  • 2019, Michela Puddu, co-founder and CEO of ETH Zurich spin-off Haelixa, took the rising innovator prize for DNA-based tracing that verifies ethical supply chains in materials such as organic cotton.
  • 2020, Maria Fátima Lucas, co-founder and CEO of Barcelona biotech Zymvol, was honoured for computational design of industrial molecules.
  • 2024, Rana Sanyal won for smart nanomedicines aimed at targeted chemotherapy at RS Research, the company she co-founded. She earlier held a Marie Curie International Reintegration Grant at Boğaziçi University and has described the MSCA period as a confidence and network builder for the later company.

These are not isolated success stories. They illustrate how mobility, industry exposure and international peer groups lower the barriers that usually keep academic researchers inside the lab.

SMEs Tap Networks They Could Not Build Alone

For a small or medium-sized enterprise the cost of building a multi-country research consortium from scratch is prohibitive. MSCA lowers that barrier. SMEs can join any action as full partners or associated partners, host fellows, co-supervise and second staff. They gain specialised expertise, advanced equipment access and a talent scouting channel without carrying the full administrative load.

Staff Exchanges move researchers and support staff between sectors and countries for knowledge transfer that continues after the grant ends. COFUND lets research organisations run co-financed doctoral or postdoctoral schemes; the EMPOWER example links three universities with 14 companies and public authorities around sustainable water management training. On X and alumni channels the conversation stays practical: Doctoral Network vacancies listing a dozen industry partners, mentoring schemes that match researchers with industry professionals, and quiet confirmation that the private-sector route is now expected rather than exceptional.

Longer Contracts and the Talent Stay Effect

International mobility remains a defining rule. Fellows must move countries; many stay in Europe afterwards. For businesses that expands the pool of researchers who already understand both academic excellence and industrial constraints.

The Choose Europe for Science pilot pushes the retention logic further. Academic and non-academic hosts recruit postdoctoral researchers with MSCA covering the first two to three years and the host guaranteeing additional years of employment. Projects must offer longer-term perspectives. The first 16 projects were selected in 2026 with positions due on EURAXESS from late that year. The Choose Europe for Science longer-term posts explicitly aim to turn brain drain into brain gain while spreading MSCA working-condition standards.

A REA study on MSCA doctoral career outcomes found more than nine in ten participants see clear added value over other doctoral routes. MSCA graduates are three times more likely to take jobs in business or other non-academic sectors within a year of finishing. That employment gap is the second-order effect that compounds: every cohort that enters industry carries the networks, standards and problem-solving habits of the programme with it.
