Computomics €6.3M bet compresses climate plant breeding cycles

Convent Capital leads €6.3 million into Computomics so its ×SeedScore platform can put climate predictions into more commercial breeding programmes before.

Computomics closed a €6.3 million Series B on 18 August 2026 to push its climate-smart breeding software into far more commercial programmes. Convent Capital’s Agri Food Fund led with €5 million. Existing backers High-Tech Gründerfonds, MBG Baden-Württemberg and Amathaon Capital joined the founders and scientific advisers. The round also carries European Union support under the InvestEU Fund.

The timing is not accidental. European growers just watched heat and drought cut into nearly every summer crop.

Who put the money in and why

Convent Capital, a Dutch impact investor running an SFDR Article 9 Agri Food Fund, took the lead seat. Stephen McLoughlin, partner at the fund, said the firm backs companies “whose environmental impact grows with their commercial success.” Better predictions mean fewer wasted seasons and varieties that actually hold up, he added, so “the impact case and the business case point the same way.”

Dr Frank Hensel, principal at High-Tech Gründerfonds, called AI-based breeding of stress-resistant crops “one of the levers that matter most as the climate shifts” and noted it sits inside Germany’s High-Tech Agenda. HTGF has been in since the seed phase.

Europe’s 2026 harvest already showed the gap

The European Commission’s Joint Research Centre cut its 2026 yield forecasts for all spring and summer crops after repeated heatwaves. Grain maize and sunflowers took the largest hits, with forecasts reduced 6-7 percent. Hot, dry conditions depleted soil moisture across western and central Europe and hit flowering. France is heading for one of its weakest maize harvests in decades.

Varieties entering the market today were selected under the climate of several years earlier. Breeding cycles routinely stretch eight to twelve years. That lag is now colliding with seasons that keep getting hotter and drier.

What the ×SeedScore models actually do

Computomics, founded in 2012 and based in Tübingen, trains machine-learning models on three data layers at once: genomic sequence, environmental records (temperature, rainfall, soil) and actual field-trial measurements. The models then predict how a given genotype will perform under a specified set of conditions.

Breeders use the output to answer questions trial plots alone cannot answer in time: which candidates stay stable across environments rather than peaking in one location, which hold under hotter and drier regimes, and where a finished variety should be placed for best results. The commercial layer is called ×SeedScore. It runs those predictions at the scale of a full breeding programme covering field crops, forages, vegetables and specialty crops.

The company’s own materials claim the system can surface 10 times more outstanding candidates for the commercial pipeline and shave up to six years off time to market. A four-step engagement (assess data, plan the first project, predict, then apply results inside selection) is designed to fit existing breeding schemes rather than replace them. The interactive dashboard lets teams filter predictions, apply custom indices and export reports without living in spreadsheets.

Breeders finally get a look before the field decides

Dr Sebastian J. Schultheiss, co-founder and CEO, put the problem in one sentence.

Breeders have never lacked ambition about climate resilience. What they have lacked is a way to see it before the field tells them, which takes years they no longer have.

Schultheiss said the new capital is about getting that capability into far more programmes, faster. The same company statement on the financing repeats the point that varieties selected under yesterday’s climate are already reaching farms that face today’s extremes.

The portfolio around ×SeedScore includes CropCompass and BreedScope for climate-smart work, Pantograph for pangenome trait discovery, and MORPHEUS plus MEGAN7 for microbiome analysis. Customers are commercial breeders and agri-food companies rather than pure academic labs.

A longer European policy and capital thread

HTGF’s continued support and the InvestEU overlay place the deal inside a multi-year public-private push for climate-resilient agriculture and deep-tech sovereignty. Convent’s fund itself earlier drew a €35 million EIF commitment under InvestEU, underscoring the policy preference for impact-aligned agri-food growth capital.

Computomics had already attracted BASF Venture Capital and Amathaon in 2021 and multi-million EIC Accelerator support in 2022. The 2026 round therefore looks less like a first leap and more like the commercialisation stage of a technology that has been quietly matured for more than a decade.

Each step tightened the link between genomic prediction and practical breeding decisions under stress.

Who gains if the models deliver

Commercial breeding houses that adopt the predictions early can allocate expensive multi-location trials more tightly and drop weak candidates sooner. Seed companies selling into drought-prone western and central European markets gain varieties that match the climate their customers actually face. Growers further down the chain get access to genetics selected for the conditions they are already living through rather than the conditions of a decade ago.

The reverse side is also clear. Programmes that keep relying solely on multi-year field observation risk releasing varieties that look strong on yesterday’s trial sites and fail under the next heatwave. Public breeding institutes under budget pressure face the same time squeeze.

None of the claims have been independently audited in the financing documents. The 10x candidate and six-year cycle reductions remain company figures. What the capital does provide is capacity to test those numbers across more crops and more programmes at commercial scale.

Deployment is the only remaining test

The money is raised. The models exist. The 2026 European harvest has already written the case for faster selection. Computomics now has to put ×SeedScore into enough commercial pipelines that the next round of varieties reaching the market were chosen with tomorrow’s temperature and rainfall already priced in. That is the wager Convent and the returning investors just made.
