Microsoft Overhauls Windows 11 With Project K2: What Changes
Microsoft just dropped its biggest Windows 11 shakeup yet. The company confirmed a sweeping set of updates focused on speed, reliability, and a cleaner user experience. Internally called “Windows K2,” this effort is already reshaping how every Windows team works. And for the first time in years, Microsoft appears to be listening to the people who actually use its software.
What Is Windows K2 and Why It Matters Now
3 The effort to fix Windows 11 has a codename: Windows K2, named after the world’s second tallest mountain. 3 This effort has postponed and even canceled other plans that Microsoft had for Windows this year. 3 Delivering these improvements is the top priority for all Windows teams internally. 2 Pavan Davuluri, EVP of Windows and Devices at Microsoft, stated, “We are focusing on making Windows 11 more responsive and consistent, so performance feels smooth and reliable.”
The timing is no accident. 16January brought cascading update failures that broke Notepad and Snipping Tool, forced Microsoft to issue a second emergency update in seven days, and saw Windows 11 lose market share as users fled to unsupported Windows 10. Meanwhile, 36Windows 11 passed 1 billion users thanks to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella’s comments during the company’s most recent earnings call.
With a billion users watching, the pressure to deliver is enormous.

Faster Performance and Lower Memory Usage
At the heart of K2 is a promise to make Windows 11 feel lighter and faster on everyday hardware. 2Microsoft is working to reduce baseline memory usage across Windows to increase available capacity for user applications.
Here is what the performance upgrades include:
- 2 File Explorer is being optimized to improve latency in search, navigation, context menus, and file copy and move operations.
- 2 Microsoft reports early improvements in app launch times.
- 2 Windows Search is being upgraded to deliver faster and more accurate results, providing a more unified experience across the taskbar search pane, File Explorer, and Settings.
2 A significant part of the performance enhancements involves migrating Windows experiences from React to the native WinUI 3 framework. The Start menu is among the components undergoing this transition.
This is a big deal. 31Microsoft going back to WinUI for the Start menu is a silent admission that the web-heavy approach wasn’t the right path for the core parts of Windows. For years, Windows 11 has looked modern but hasn’t always matched that with responsiveness. That gap largely comes from layering web technologies over core system experiences.
16 Reduced memory usage and faster search could meaningfully benefit the large share of Windows 11 users running on hardware that meets only the operating system’s minimum specifications. For devices running close to the minimum 4 GB of RAM, even modest reductions in background memory consumption could translate into noticeably smoother multitasking.
Movable Taskbar Returns After Five Years
This is the change that generated the loudest cheers.
11 Microsoft has confirmed it will let you move the taskbar in Windows 11, after more than 5 years of removing the feature. 12 The updated taskbar will allow users to place it on the top, left, or right edges of the screen, in addition to the default bottom position. 16 The feature request “Bring back the ability to move the taskbar to the top and sides of the screen on Windows 11” drew more than 24,000 upvotes, making it one of the platform’s top-requested additions.
17“Repositioning the taskbar is one of the top asks we’ve heard from you,” Windows chief Pavan Davuluri said in the announcement.
11 The smaller taskbar buttons option was added in 2025, but it is not the perfect replacement of Windows 10’s smaller taskbar. Microsoft is now adding the option to make the taskbar smaller. 12 This may sound like a small tweak, but for many users, especially those with ultrawide monitors or multi-display setups, taskbar placement can significantly affect workflow and usability. 13 Rivals like Stardock’s Start11 have literally built businesses on the back of Microsoft’s reluctance to tweak these elements of Windows.
Less Copilot, Fewer Ads, and Calmer Updates
Microsoft is pulling back its aggressive AI push across Windows 11. 3Microsoft has announced that it will be reducing the number of places where Copilot appears throughout the OS, starting with Notepad, Photos, Snipping Tool, and Widgets.
12 Microsoft is starting to rethink how much AI it really needs inside Windows 11. As part of its broader push to improve Windows quality, the company is reducing the number of Copilot entry points across the OS and its apps. This rollback will begin with apps where Copilot integrations had started to feel excessive. The change is part of a wider shift in strategy of moving away from aggressively embedding AI everywhere and toward integrating it only where it actually makes sense.
On the ads front, 3the company is reducing the type of ads that appear in the Recommended feed in the Start menu, and will go so far as to easily let you disable the ads within Start entirely.
Windows Update is also getting a major overhaul:
| Current Behavior | What Is Changing |
|---|---|
| Multiple restarts per month | Consolidated into a single monthly restart |
| Forced update installs on shutdown | Users can shut down without installing pending updates |
| Limited pause options | Users can pause updates for any length of time |
5 Users will be able to control the time when updates are installed, with the option of taking them offline longer. Microsoft is attempting to minimize forced restarts.
Better Drivers, Stronger Windows Hello, and WSL Fixes
Reliability is the third pillar of the K2 effort. 5Microsoft is working with hardware partners to enhance the quality of drivers and reduce system crashes. Bluetooth, USB connections, audio devices, and printers are all getting better. Windows Hello authentication will be more reliable and fast.
Key reliability improvements at a glance:
- More stable Bluetooth connections
- Fewer USB-related crashes
- Improved printer discovery
- More consistent device wake behavior in docking setups
- Faster fingerprint sign-in speed
- Better facial recognition through Windows Hello
- Improved gaming handheld support, including the ROG Xbox Ally X
3 Microsoft is also improving performance, reliability, and integration for developers using Linux tools and environments on Windows. WSL upgrades include faster file performance between Linux and Windows, better network compatibility, and a streamlined setup process.
For the growing community of developers who rely on WSL daily, these fixes address real pain points that have lingered since the subsystem launched.
When Will These Windows 11 K2 Updates Arrive
3 The company says that much of these improvements will begin rolling out in preview over the coming months. No single release date has been confirmed for all changes. Windows Insiders will get first access to test the features before they hit the general public. 3 Microsoft’s manifesto outlines its three areas of focus for Windows 11 this year: Performance, Reliability, and Craft. 3 Across the operating system, the company will focus on improving the baseline reliability of areas such as the Windows Insider Program, drivers and apps, updates, and Windows Hello. This includes clearer visibility into what features are included in each Insider build and higher quality builds entering each channel. 37 Windows 11 adoption has surged rapidly since Windows 10’s official end-of-life in October 2025, reaching a 72.57% global desktop market share by February 2026. That means millions of new users are counting on Microsoft to get this right. 3 Windows 11’s reputation is currently at an all time low, and the company is hoping that these changes will begin to turn the tide and help win back the trust of users. Whether Project K2 is a genuine turning point or just another set of promises remains to be seen. But for the first time in a long time, Microsoft is saying the right things. Now it needs to prove it with the right actions.
